@keithcrowther6086 True as. And even worse, it diminishes & devalues what they did & were, and what their last memories in life meant. As if all of that isn't as important as the next memories, or getting more from them. What about being grateful for the memories they already gave them, instead of ignoring all those memories they already have ? If they meant that much, then they obviously gave them a lot to be grateful for. Why ruin it with diminishing what they already gave,& expecting more, as if all of them is just not good enough. 🤔🌏☮️

My concern would be that religious organizations tend to prey on vulnerable, grieving individuals, taking advantage of their fragile state and/or temporarily compromised judgement. You can, of course, decide to take comfort in whatever you want - no one is going to police your thoughts or preferences, nor should they ever. Just be careful not to stay downwind of predatory, proselytising religious institutions and churches that ultimately only care about money and power. Whatever comfort they may provide will always be only temporary and conditional. Buyer beware 😅

Dear Dan, I'm sorry for your loss. Your grief is a good indicator that your service-dog felt loved and needed. What heaven on earth for a dog Can be found, you gave it a Big slice. Feeling better in time is not a betrayal of that love, neither is wanting to feel better or lessening the blow or seeking out community for support. Personally, i don't handle religious grief support very well, because a salespitch in that vulnerable state grosses me out but, remaining cognizant of the good intention in which that support is given, acts of kindness will have an easier time landing with you as such. What happens after we're gone? Who knows? "The people who love us will miss us." Keanu knows (hallowed be His name)

Dealing with grief is a very personal thing and everyone has to approach it in their own way. From my perspective, I think coming to terms with the finality of death is an important step in the healing process. Comfort can be found in the memories of the good times you shared with a passed loved one. In that sense, they live on through you. I find this very calming.

I see it as a placebo, though people are free to deal with their grief however they see fit. It's not really a choice anyway. I don't believe I've ever met anyone who said "I believe in God as a way to cope with grief." However, if you're questioning your belief and considering the alternative, I can say from personal experience it is possible to process grief without a god concept. It can be extremely painful, and the amount of time it takes varies, but it's a `sober` way of dealing with it that really allows you to move on.

I've never felt a more horrible pain than the grief of losing a beloved animal companion. The "Rainbow Bridge" is the only comfort I've found, even though I know it's as much a fantasy as the traditional religious concepts of "life after death". I've avoided seeking therapy -- secular or otherwise -- because grief is my last link with the animals that are still as dear to me as my children. If I stop mourning them I'm afraid (and I know this makes no sense) they'll be truly dead to me.

NEPy, let's set the record straight with some real definitions instead of bending words to fit your misguided arguments. Atheism, as consistently defined across multiple authoritative sources like the Oxford, Merriam-Webster, Cambridge, Collins, and American Heritage dictionaries, is the disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of any gods. It's not a belief system, it's not a religion-it's simply the absence of belief in deities. On the other hand, religion, as these same dictionaries outline, involves belief in and worship of a supernatural power or powers, coupled with a system of practices and moral codes derived from this belief. Religion encompasses structured doctrines, rituals, and often a community bound by shared faith. Your claim that atheism is a 'religion of self' is not only unfounded but fundamentally incorrect. Atheism doesn’t prescribe a way of life, demand worship, or assert dogmatic principles. It's the exact opposite of what every major dictionary describes as religion. Using logic and facts, not personal biases, it’s clear your argument about atheism being a religion crumbles under the weight of its own inaccuracies. It's time to argue based on facts, NEPy, not fallacies. If you want to engage in meaningful debate, start by understanding the basic terms of what you’re debating. Otherwise, you're just shadow boxing with your own misconceptions.

Dealing with loss is always hard. Religion most just puts off dealing with that, and causes a whole bunch of problems in the process. Community is one of the things that help most (along with therapy), and you don't necessarily need any particular belief to access that. Although a lot of communities have been built around religion, unfortunately.
