I flew in a lot of slicks during my tour as a grunt in Vietnam (67-68). The Army pilots and crews were the best at getting you in and most of all getting you out. Great video. Thank you.

I liked the one you did on the Bell 47 (had a go myself once in Florida) but the Huey was just fantastic. You really do have a charmed life, the ex-military pilot really knew his stuff and looked like he'd be an excellent instructor. I love your vids.

To me the most awesome thing about UH1 is the "chopper sound" that I think made all helicopters known as choppers. The sound of UH1 was unmistakable and meant safety and rescue in the warzone. Cool stuff, I will have to find a way to fly one someday.
@Oooonumbers

They are not, that causes major issues for helicopters. See compressibility, blades going supersonic tears rotor blades up. The wop sound is mainly from vortices shedding of the preceding blade getting hit by the following blade.

It’s also meant for Vietcong that a target coming up..amazing that 6000 Huey lost in South Vietnam. But also amazingly 70% of that crashes, the crew survive..its a testament of the strong build of this helicopter.

Former-Military pilots always seem to *exude* expertise. Putting aside *how* military's are used, the training seems tip-top. Thanks, Nick. The Huey is the de-facto heli for so many people, including myself. It's nice to see the birds used for less-shooty purposes.

The best helicopter video I’ve ever seen. I’ve been infatuated with helicopters since the 1950 series, “The Whirlybirds” in a Bell 47. 1950 engineers designed these Huey’s, , the SR 71 Blackbird, Bell X1, and rockets that took us to the moon. All with slide rules. The Huey lives on. Eagle 1, 1968, only with 4500 hours, how many people cherish to even have met you, even from afar.

Excellent video. I’m from the uk n ex army. I’ve flew in many military helicopters but always wanted to fly in the Huey. It’s an icon. I saw a few working in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thanks for making this video and please anyone out there consider donating to keep this in the air and hopefully next time fishermen will have hope when they run into trouble in this area.

As a military photographer, I got to fly 4x per day for a year, doing chase of an experimental aircraft and experienced slip landings, autorotations and the pilot pivoting one skid on a fencepost in precisin hover. One day, with a guest plot, I was on board when the pilot had a prang, due to insufficient lift speed (from about 40 ft), resulting in fly-in repair for the aircraft, as the skids were stressed. In another posting, I regularly flew in the base Rescue helicopter (Huey, natch), so the Huey 1H Remains my favourite aircraft of all times, and I stopped counting at 21, one day, as I made a list of what I had flown into so far, either as commercial passenger or crew.

Nick, I subscribe to your channel primarily for the car reviews. I drive an e46 M3 so naturally your F8X M reviews interested me. But your other reviews are pretty good as well. This is the first aircraft review I've watched and I've got to say I learned a lot. I rode in a UH-1 about 21 years ago when I first joined the Army and I distinctly remember the bouncing that you could see in the video are 21 minutes. I know it happens in most airframes, but it made me chuckle a bit. Awesome review. Looks like I'll start watching more than just the car reviews. Great job!

I flew the UH-1H and C-model guns in Vietnam accruing 1,955 combat flight hours. I was a helicopter mechanic prior to Army flight school. The first thing I would do in your position is have a talk with your maintenance people about that 1 to 1 main rotor vibration you're shaking through at flight idle on the engine. We didn't have a cockpit procedure anywhere near as detailed or complicated as that you just went through. FAA civilian minutia I guess. It's my understanding you don't autorotate all the way to the ground, either. Insane practice from my POV. We were taught to autorotate our helicopters in every conceivable fashion/manner (except upside down) to full ground touchdown. I lost 5 helos in Vietnam combat, successfully autorotating to the ground with no injuries to crew or pax. My Co-pilot asked me one day if "vertical" autorotations were possible? We only discussed theory in flight school. I climbed to 5,000 feet, confirmed hover with all crew members (no pax that flight) - dropped the collective, chopped the throttle and confirmed needles split while we quite safely descended in a 100% flat vertical autorotation. At about 2,000 feet, I pushed the cyclic forward, pulled in collective to match the needles and continued our mission. Unfortunate that as one pilot simply talking to another... you haven't been given the opportunities we had to explore the FULL 100% capabilities of the machines we operated. Have a blessed day. John (Tet 1968) 76 years old and still breathing.

I also was a US Army Dustoff Medevac crewchief (67N1F) stationed in S. Korea in 1976-1978, had many hours of stick time with a Vietnam era pilot who wanted me to be able to land the aircraft if he "got shot". Big stuff for a 20 year old kid. This great video brings back lots of memories. Unfortunately, we were crowded out by the Blackhawk program.
