My first knowledge of this song was from a book on sailing. Each chapter ended with a shanty. I couldn't read music then at all. Barely can now. But I am not just a little grateful that Bellowhead is in my email inbox. Very grateful indeed. Y'all are a fabulous group doing fabulous work on timeless folk songs. Shanties are my fav. I have been a sailor in the merchants and the military. Thanks, guys. I'll contribute when I can. Love y'all.

I'm 76 and love it! Absolute great stage presence and showmanship! Could I adopt Rachael as a granddaughter? Jon is a musical genius! I've sang with my guitar the Kingston Trio version since 1960! And the story told has been true so many times with my shipmates! It really does happen to young, gullible sailors. Ha! Sorry you all retired. Mike

And for those here who are spelling it "santy", I'll just say that I think it should perhaps be "Santee", the name of a river in South Carolina. Sailors knew where the rivers were and they sang about them.. Perhaps the salt who penned these lyrics was on a Brit merchantman who was acquainted with the North American east coast more than just the New York area.
@bikemonkey0063 жыл бұрын
Santy (or santee or even santi in some version ) could refer to the specific type songs sang by sailors when pumping bilge water( like a shanty but more specific to pumping bilge water ,rather than just sailing in general) .So I've always presumed it was more in reference to pumping the bilge water and Weighing anker to get out of Newyork as he had a bad experience and wanted to get out of there.The word frequently occurs in folks songs referring to preping ships to leave Port.So I'd guess it just means leaving or going away in this case .The lyrics of new york girls changes throughout the various different versions over the years but some of the earlier ones definitely seem to be referring to weighing anker and wanting to go home. Not sure I see the connection to rivers in this case, although both meanings could originate from santianna.
@lawrencetanner79583 жыл бұрын
@@bikemonkey006 really good observations. The "away" is probably "aweigh", as in "hoist the anchor. Let's get under way". I hadn't heard about the bilge pumping. And, yeah, Santa Anna or Santianna did find his way into a lot of shanties. But whatever the case, the sailor was def ready to leave New York (which sentiment I recall with clarity when I was a deckhand on a research vessel there.)

BOURNEMOUTH OPERA HOUSE - LIVE DVD MONDAY MAY 2nd The Spring tour dates have all sold out so, due to demand we have added an extra date at the extremely beautiful Bournemouth Opera House - now the Academy - on Monday May 2nd 2011 It's so gorgeous we decided it would be the ideal venue to film a new live DVD. With support from the extremely bouncy 3 Daft Monkeys and a few special surprises it should be a great Bank Holiday party. Come swing those dancing legs.

original by Tim Hart, Robert Johnson, Rick Kemp, Peter Knight, Nigel Pegrum, Maddy Prior AKA Steeleye Span Somehow the original are always the best - but still a a great version from Bellowhead which without these song would remain floating in the distance of time with this who heard it eons ago
@steffbenton-martyn68366 жыл бұрын
The original is a 19th Century traditional Irish ballad, written in the 1830s. I'd recommend listening to different versions of this - the Kingston Trio version from 1959 is pretty different to this one but it's interesting to look at the way people have interpreted it. Actually, really, Steeleye Span were pretty late to this polka party. Another brilliant version, I hasten to add. :)

As I walked down to New York town, a fair maid I did meet She asked me back to see her place; she lived on Barrack Street And away, Santy, my dear Annie Oh you New York girls, can't you dance the polka? And when we got to Barrack Street, we stopped at forty-four Her mother and her sister were waiting at the door And away, Santy, my dear Annie Oh you New York girls, can't you dance the polka? And when I got inside the house, the drinks were passed around The liquor was so awful strong, my head went round and round And then we had another drink before we sat to eat The liquor was so awful strong, I quickly fell asleep And away, Santy, my dear Annie Oh you New York girls, can't you dance the polka? When I awoke next morning, I had an aching head And there was I Jack all alone, stark naked in me bed My gold watch and my money and my lady friend were gone And there was I Jack all alone, stark naked in the room And away, Santy, my dear Annie Oh you New York girls, can't you dance the polka? Oh looking round that little room, there's nothing I could see But a woman's shift and apron that were no use to me With a barrel for a suit of clothes, down Cherry Street forlorn Where Martin Churchill took me in and he sent me round Cape Horn So sailor lads, take warning when you land on New York shore You'll have to get up early to be smarter than a whore And away, Santy, my dear Annie Oh you New York girls, can't you dance the polka? And away, Santy, my dear Annie Oh you New York girls, can't you dance the polka?
