Great to see the 'sea shanties' back, I love life at sea, songs like this keep me alive, just like the old days, never let the folk stop! On the big grey steel vessels, no rum but still the need for a tune in yer head to get you through!

It's such a perfect song and not a day goes by that it doesn't pop into our heads. :)

This was a work song on steamboats transporting cotton and sugar in the American Deep South. They needed huge quantities of wood as fuel, so the song helped maintain pace, while passing logs down the line of workers. Would've been interesting if bellowhead had released the un-PC version.

No, I believe they wrote this song.

"cover" but yeah that version is probably a bit more faithful to the origins. I really like the theatrics of Bellow head though
@SpaceJesus20989 жыл бұрын
Aren't the original lyrics to this sort of offensive?
@alexkx39 жыл бұрын
SpaceJesus2098 Well it's a traditional folk song from over a 100 years ago, so by today's standard yes.
@kosimpson8 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Moss Yo homie, these be the uncut lyrics: Away down south where the cocks do crow Way down in Florida The gals they all play the old Banjo And we'll roll the woodpile down Rollin', rollin', rollin' the whole world round That brown gal o' mine's down the Georgia line And we'll roll the woodpile down When I was a young man in my prime I'd clench them yeller girls two at a time We'll roll 'em high and we'll roll 'em low We'll heave 'em up and away we'll go It's rouse and bust 'er is the cry A black man's wage is never high Oh, one more heave, and that'll do For we're the bullies to kick her through
@kosimpson8 жыл бұрын
***** Ahem, have you ever listened to rap music? The aforementioned lyrics are comparatively mild.
@MrNeily398 жыл бұрын
+Sir Church - isn't that an oxymoron?
@austinlocke18 жыл бұрын
+SpaceJesus2098 Or try the Beatles "Run for Your Life" "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man". If you want truly offensive lyrics...

To see these old folk tunes modified for the sake of massification via brassification seems more of a subtraction than addition.

anyone who criticises the approach of Bellowhead really needs to see them live ! I had the pleasure of seeing them on stage on 4 occasions including their farewell tour date at the winding wheel in Chesterfield. a great loss to the live music scene . . ..we shall not see there like again
@Phazaar7 жыл бұрын
Wholehearted disagreement. This isn't music for the sake of preservation, it's music for the sake of elation. Just let yourself get into it; forget the nonsense. It's also insanity to suggest brass wouldn't have featured in historic performance of these tunes. We literally have hundreds of accounts describing exactly that.
@alanollier96836 жыл бұрын
Folk music always was and indeed should always be in a state of evolution, songs were not written to become a "Cultural Artifact" but to entertain and inform the listener, Malian music became the Blues, became Rock n Roll, similar music became Mento in Jamaica and became Reggae, all with cross pollination and a desire to please the listener, just be glad that the old songs have a new life, though I'm sure some people probably got annoyed 150 years ago when somebody played "John Barlycorn" on the newfangled piano.

Dreadnoughts version is better
@GoodAvatar7 жыл бұрын
You know, this is an annoying problem. These guys are *quite* good. I very much enjoy this version of the song. But I *love* the original song. This is entirely too clean and bereft of *chipper racism* and *salty prostitution* for my tastes. I suppose if you're going to Disney-fi and clean up a really fun song to sing, this is the way you should probably go about it. No offense Bellowhead. You did a fine job. A really, really, really good job cleaning up this song into something cute. But the dirty sailor version is *WAY* too much fun to sing!
