I am almost old. I have always had big strong dogs.We once had an accidental pairing of a Saint Bernard female and male Great Dane. The pups were incredible! They took the best features of both breeds. The runt, Snip, became 150 to 175 lbs. No one could lift him to weigh. They were excellent in every way. Every day was a joy with them until they died. I am fascinated by your dogs. I see a potential for some people to own them for the wrong reasons, thus weakening the breed and destroying their reputation. I love the huge difference in the instinct of large powerful dogs. They seem to be born with a knowledge of their size, power, and after puppyhood, need to move carefully around smaller, weaker important people in their lives. You are so fortunate to be surrounded by these beautiful dogs. They fascinate me. Thank you.

It can be tricky working with an adult and I would highly recommend looking for a trainer near you who has experience working with guardian dogs. Also, I just saw several videos on KZfaq by Mike Moore on socializing Boerboels. He might be someone to contact.

But, I do not recommend IAMS. I only used it because it was easy to find and I thought that new owners would be able to buy it, then wean them off of it easily. Many of my adult dogs have ongoing health problems when on IAMS dry dog food. I know that IAMS used to do testing on animals, which I also oppose. I LOVE Kirkland's dog food, drive a long ways, to another state, in order to buy it at Costco. If I lived near a city and had a butcher near me, I would do raw feed instead.

yep I mix Kirkland with another brand and the good old butchers makes the meal perfect. Having a big freezer and finding a butcher and making the drive is worth it (if not too far) because they throw away so much good dog food if you find a good one they will put the meat (that they would be throwing away) in the freezer until you collect. and if you find two butcher's the dogs will start giggling wether for free or a small fee it's priceless. (mine doesn't charge me as they know it's for pets) but i will occasionally buy a whole chicken for the fun of it :-)

Thanks for the tips! I have been dreaming of adding raw, or replacing kibble completely. Maybe I need to make the hour drive to the nearest big city in another state.

The tails were traditionally cut off to protect them from wild animals in Africa. They were vulnerable with longer tails. If you have multiple Boerboels, they play quite rough with each other and often try to grab one another by the tail. So, having short tails can still be an advantage even in the U.S. Big dogs with long, powerful tails can wipe out coffee tables and hit children in the face. Some breeders in Europe leave the tails long.

hello if you believe those pups went through any type of pain getting their tails cut off or for some reason can't function now properly because of it, you're a moron. And they are only a few days old when they are cut off, not having any nerves developed in them, so they don't feel any pain when they are docked.

Seriously, what do u think dogs (well behaved dogs that can wander off leash and do as they please without getting into or causing trouble ... what do u think) they get into, eat and drink, when out of sight and are doing what dogs do. Some dirty stale water surely will not hurt these animals. Babying them and keeping them in prestine, none natural/dog-like conditions, thats whats gonna hurt these dogs (physically, spiritually and naturally). Oh no, its eating a pc' of wood, dont let it do that lol know what i mean.

a boerboel will protect its family with its life. They need proper training and make awesome watch dogs. They do play a bit rough when young... my new little pup is 10 weeks and already 20kg Love their soft skin and eyes

They are like any strong dominant breed. Training needs to be taken seriously. I have a 4 year old Boerboel and an 8 year old Cane Corso and they are truly great family dogs, I've had them both since they were 8 weeks. They've had a couple spats between themselves (they are both dominant females) but have never shown any aggression towards their human family. The Boerboel sleeps with my 6 year old daughter every night. I've lived with dogs my entire life and I can honestly say that the temperament of my Boerboel has made the Boerboel my favorite breed. Boerboels are very loving and affectionate with there family and will successfully defend you from the apocalypse if need be. Again, training and strong leadership is key with any dog, but especially with breeds that can legitimately eat you.

I'm sure if you google "bulldog mauls owner" there will be countless stories of exactly that. That doesn't mean that it's inherit of the breed.

The links show what could have been and proper socialization not to mention improper evaluation by authorities given their admitted terrified feeling around the dogs that they would have sensed there by skewing the results of any evaluation because the dogs would have been on alert. But thankfully you truly evaluate the nature of a dog in relation to what you expect and want out of a dog not many people go that far thank you

@ I am so glad to see someone with realistic reasons. People whine about cruelty (albeit sometimes it is necessary to protect our canine friends) but if you have ever seen a huge dog split its tail and it can't properly heal because the dog keeps banging it on things. Not all dogs need their tails docked but if it is a breed that normally has it due to service reasons I will follow suit. We pamper our dogs by keeping them inside but sometimes the corner of the walls can really hurt these big giants.
