I hear of Green man decades ago but I'm not sure of the details, it's not just made up for the song.

@@bobjackson4720 The 'Green Man' is the carved faces found mostly in churches - they appear to be made of leaves or have foliage coming out of their mouths (and sometimes eyes and nostrils). They are medieval although with Roman and Indian origins. They were only termed 'Green Men' in 1939. They do not appear in any folklore and there are no mentions of them in any church records. We do not know how they were viewed by the church authorities but they were clearly not considered pagan. The modern pagan movements have taken up the Green Man and in the process concocted back stories to explain his origin and his supposed relaitionship to nature.
