The Cyclassics Hamburg 2023 (official name: BEMER Cyclassics) is a one-day race held annually in August. The event starts and finishes in Hamburg and leads the riders in a loop around the city. In 2023, the race will be held on Sunday, 20 August and will cover a generous 205 kilometres.
The North German one-day race leads over mostly flat terrain, which is why there is often a sprint to the finish in the finale. It is one of two races in Germany with UCI World Tour status, the other being Eschborn-Frankfurt. The race has been held 25 times so far. The record winner is Italian Elia Viviani, who won three times in a row from 2017 to 2019 (and is aiming to be on the start line this time too). After a two-year break from Covid, the Austrian Marco Haller from the German team Bora-Hansgrohe won the race last year.
The Cyclassics 2023 starts in the city centre of Hamburg and leads the field of riders in a north-westerly direction out of the city. Then the race heads north on flat terrain. Via Quickborn and Barmstedt, the racers ride to Bokel, where a small loop is made before heading back south towards the start and finish. After passing Pinneberg, things get tricky: The riders have to cross the Waseberg three times in total, which is only 700 metres long but has an average gradient of almost 10%. Before the climb there is a sharp right-hand bend, so the riders can enter the climb with only a little momentum. After the Waseberg has been mastered three times, the riders then head for the finish. The finish line is in Mönckebergstraße, one of Hamburg's famous shopping streets.
Due to the relatively flat elevation profile, a mass sprint is almost inevitable. Once again, numerous top sprinters have announced their participation in this year's race: Tim Merlier, Mads Pedersen, Olav Kooij, Dylan Groenewegen, Caleb Ewan, Sam Bennett, Bryan Coquard, Arne Marit, Fernando Gaviria. Or maybe the German riders around Pascal Ackermann, Phil Bauhaus, Max Kanter, John Degenkolb, Marius Mayrhofer and Kim Heiduk can ensure the fifth domestic victory at the Cyclassics?"
