The pre-serve ball bounce routine serves multiple purposes.
1. It insulates Ben from distractions. In this match, Lohani was repeatedly walking to the corner for his sweat towel. Rather than standing around waiting, Ben could start his routine while his opponent was walking back from the corner.
2. It’s eye/hand coordination practice. Even if you're the GOAT, you can always practice more eye/hand.
3. It’s a respite between points. Other than his left arm movement, Ben’s body is motionless. Part of athletic endurance is injecting physical and mental relaxation moments into competition.
