THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

I agree their relationship could have been better written, but most of the relationships I had / saw in high school were hot messes with lots of stupidity. I think Kevin and Gwen having a good relationship is a nice equalizer for them vs Ben. Ben needs some flaws.

The point of teens dating is making mistakes, learning from them, and figuring out who you are as you also figure out who you want to surround yourself with.

Ben got too immature, that's my issue Julie went into "I'm more important than saving the world" kind of girlfriend that I despise. I get wanting her things to be very important, especially for a normal human, but her boy is always on the go stopping villains and saving lives. It's the Plumbers fault for not having many earth agents I would have loved it if Julie joined the Plumbers with Ship

1 simple fix that would solve Ben and Julie's relationship in Ultimate Alien. Rather than having them fight every episode over selfishness, have Julie accompany them on Missions (using her Ship armour). Have Ben and Julie fight alongside one another and look out for each other. Have Ben grow protective and concerned about her.

It's strange how Elena is strong enough to kill Ben, almost does so on 2 occasions (with Ben being saved by Julie both times), executed similar plans in both instances, and then is just never brought up again, despite swearing she'll come back.

These reviews made me realize how weirdly episodic Ben and Julie's relationship struggles are. Even in episodes like Duped, where Ben screws up everything by the end, the status quo is always reset by the next just to start the same process all over again. I remember watching The Transmogrification of Eunice as a kid and being really confused. Julie never once claimed that she and Ben might as well be broken up onscreen; in fact, her most recent appearance prior was literally just the previous episode. I thought she might've made a comment like that in Duped, but she never said it there either. They made a whole mini-arc about a line that was not only offscreen, but happened in between seasons.

When I was rewatching this episode the conflict felt so forced. Like Ben could have just said goodbye right there at the airport or just disregard the mission, but him going like: hmmm it is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask your girlfriend to abandone all of her dreams just so she can escort you to a mission that you are perfectly capable to do alone, is just so stupid

Both Elena episodes felt like character assassinations to Elena, but this one is the one where I felt she went full yandere. As if the previous appearance wasn't enough to tear her character down, they do it again, down to the climax being identical to the previous one.

I always wondered why the Nanomachines just didn't try converting Julie instead of mimicing her. OR just having the episode focus on Julie & Ship fighting of Elena during the tennis event.

I wish somehow they made it work out between Ben and Julie. It'd be great to keep them as a couple throughout omniverse. That and I don't mind them fighting, but maybe don't make it the entire plot every time

I think it's better that they don't, because it sends some important messages about relationships. Like they say in this episode, real relationships take work from both side. Ben didn't respect Julie, so her breaking up with him shows girls that it's okay to walk away from relationships where you aren't happy and treated right, and boys that if they act like this, they won't be rewarded for it in the end.

It wasn't the break-up itself, it was the way they broke up IMO. Ben was having a gamer moment and shouting at his console, _in a flashback._ After Julie's tenure, their break-up deserved an episode. And they should have leveraged Ben's celebrity narcissism, not a damn gamer moment.

Elena feels like she undergoes complete personality shifts everytime she appears, but for what it's worth, i think this is her most interesting portrayal. I would've loved for them to continue using her in this role in Omniverse, specially with how much this series played with Ben's love subplot.

The fact this is Elena last important ep kinda puts her on par with a lot of classics one time villain Yes it took a retcon to do but Elena story was kinda going some where and never concluded Then she’s just a background character in a Omniverse filler episode Rip Elena, she’ll go down in Ben 10 history as the character you’re force to get attached to with no follow up

i really wish they ended Ben and Julie's relationship sooner, and instead developed her into a strong supporting character. she's so much better and more likeable as her own character, and there were so many missed opportunities for her and Ship as characters. it really sucks how she eventually became just another one of Ben's bitter ex-girlfriends, and over such a dumb reason. also, how did they manage to butcher Elena's character so badly??

Even as a Benlie fan, I don't mind the concept of them just not working out, even if they do love each other. Sometimes it's good to write stories about break ups that aren't so cut and dry, but this is not the way it should have been handled.

Next is “Ultimate Sacrifice” my favorite episode in the whole series. And the two places it’s gonna struggle with are Plot and Importance. Plot I feel is pretty interesting. Transformations have gained sentience before. And it makes sense that if a blank DNA slate is put through the worst case scenario for a thousand years, it would develop an artificial intelligence to experience that simulation. Importance is riding solely on the legacy of the episode and how much people talk about it.

I think Julie and Bens relationship was actually pretty accurate to a relationship where both members have careers that are important to them. I think its a little harsh to judge ben for not seeing through the microchips disguise since Julie occasionally acted similarly when they were trying to make up. I also think that this COULD have been an important episode if the relationship had continued into Omniverse because of the candid conversation Kevin has with Ben. Sure plenty of other people had tried to teach this lesson to ben but I don't know it actually felt the other times like they were just attacking him. Whereas this conversation with Kevin felt more like a best friend trying to help another one through their flaws. I think it was a neat parallel to how alien force ben helped Kevin start his relationship with Gwen, and if it had kept going I think Kevin walking ben through his relationship with Julie might've made it work. Another reason I think this relationship SHOULD have worked in Omniverse was with the Galactic Plumbers becoming normalized and publicized Ben could have potentially had more time with Julie since he wasn't fighting every single threat in Bellwood by himself.

Perfect Girlfriend just made it clear that Ben wasn't ready for a relationship as even if he was happy with Julie, he never cared or respected her enough to actually make her happy as most of their fights are because of him. Was pretty sad, even as a kid that Ben didn't find 'Julie's' behavior strange just because she wasn't nagging him to be a good boyfriend(which he wasn't) and didn't take what Elena was doing as a sign to be better as she was willing to do whatever HE wanted, and he realized he didn't want that.

The way Omniverse is structured she could have gotten a season arc, the two time zone nature of the show also allowing for Ben’s history with her to play out and introduce a set up to pay off in the present day.

Relationships always have their ups and downs and this is one of the things to help me learn that also Elena torturing Ben as she loves him is just horrible and sadly no nanomech I did like this episode still and way big vs the buildings was awesome

Ben and Julie did had a great moments together and it's a shame on what they keep doing to them like keep switching to arguing and being together again which annoys me because like when will they just decide to be together or not and it's not helping in they're relationship, until in omniverse they broke up and it's a shame they are no longer together again 😞

This is honestly just one of my favorite episodes even with all the issues behind it entirely due to how my personal life was at the time. Was in my Sophomore Year of High School during the Fall of 2011 and saw this episode among others on Teletoon and this episode was just funny, but also pretty deep to myself as well especially. 2011 as a whole from beginning to end was just an enjoyable period for myself and Ultimate Alien honestly added to it really.

I really feel like they just decided to make it clash at every instance possible. They really had something going in Alien Force but by Season 3 it was clear that the writers didn't want them to succeed, and at the end of the day it's up to the writers if the characters can make it work or not. So instead we're just uncomfortably going along with them arguing every episode they're featured together in.

Gwen and Kevin are interesting in that we're constantly told what a great boyfriend Kevin is but we never see how Gwen is a girlfriend Which I always thought was pretty weird.. We don't even get how she feels about him. Kevin said he likes being the guy Gwen sees in him and Gwen crickets

I hated this episode for nerfing Ult. Echo Echo. They made his mouth move just for this one episode simply to give him a bullshit weakness (that doesn't even make sense within the context of his alien form) that was never brought up before or again.

Hm, fair and valid points and opinions, it’s a shame that this Episode, as well as the Ben x Julie Relationship, wasn’t better handled, makes you wonder what could’ve been, actually do you have any ideas of what could’ve been? I had a crazy idea, that I wrote in the comments of your recent Albedo video, where I said that a spin-off or even just one off episode that had Albedo, Charmcaster, and Darkstar team up would have been cool but, after watching this, I think Elena should replace Charmcaster and (I have no idea who should replace him) should replace Michael. You’ve got Albedo, who looks like Ben, and Elena, who now hates Ben. That situation is both terrifying and kind of funny.

I agree that they were always meant to fail. Ben was just too immature for a serious relationship between them. What pisses me off is how the creators handled the break up. It was an over the phone misunderstanding and then boom, no more Ben and Julie. I mean Ben and Julie breaking up feels like it should've been a bigger thing than it was made out to be.

Omniverse not doing anything with Elena’s storyline is a surprise with how much it dipped into past continuity, and seeing the chips in action in Omniverse’s style could have been interesting. There’s also that Omniverse plays up Ben’s love life to the point of getting an unwanted harem, the focus of two episodes (Rules of Engagement and the one where Esther, Looma, Attea and Nyancy each fight over him), so giving Elena a conclusion there is something I’d rather have watched than Dumb and Dumber looking for a smoothie shop.

Something about this episode that really annoyed me is when the nanites start to strangle Ben. He specifically gasps "In my lungs!" as it happens. But, he's Ultimate Echo Echo at the time. An alien who, being a creature made of living sound, DOES NOT HAVE LUNGS!

I feel like alot of us in the Ben10 fandom talk about how much of a bad boyfriend Ben is and I'm not saying he isn't but I feel like we overlook how much being Ben10 fucks with Ben to the point where I get why he acts the way he does sometimes. Like first off the whole thing With Julie and Ship. Ship is an alien weapon capable of amazing and terrifying things and being in Bens line of work I understand why he would only see it as that, Hell even both kevin and gwen acknowledge that ship is dangerous. And Julie's insistance on expecting Ben to treat ship like just another ordinary house pet really doesn't make sense. Like her asking Gwen if Ben would care about ship if he was just an ordinary house pet is a really dumb question when you consider that the main reason she gets into all these dangerous situations is because Ship ISN'T a normal housepet. Like the vreedles/the forever knights would have no use for an ordinary earth animal and if they did of course Ben would go out of his way to save her pet. There are also moments when i feel like everyone except ben forgets that he's a hero.. Gwen telling ben that he should've just left the forever knights alone cuz they're not a threat in order to be on time for julies tennis game is kind of irresponsible?? Especially when u think of all the wild shit the forever knights end up doing later on in UA. Like yeah atp they are fodder and shouldn't be taken 100% seriousl but Ben's just supposed to ignore them breaking into a bank?.Even in OV we see that Ben just can't really ignore crime even in dimension 23. Julie being bummed that ben has to run off to do hero shit is understandable and yes her feelings are truly validated but then holding it against him like he's doing it on purpose is kinda fucked up. Also wtf does "we might as well be broken up mean?" Because I'd take that to mean that we are broken up. Was ben a dick in the way he acted? ofc he was, was ben at fault for a good chunk of the issues in the relationship? You bet! But they're really moments when it feels like ben is getting shit on undeserved. Me personally i feel like if ben were to have a steady relationship of sorts it wouldn't be with a regular civilian like julie it would be with someone who is either part alien or someone who's into the whole plumber,hero thing my first pick would be Ester but Kai is ok,just wish they gave her more development.

Honestly Benlie is a far more realistic teen couple than Gwevin. It's true that Gwevin makes sense as Gwen's significantly more mature than your average 16yo girl(especially your average 16yo rich white girl), and Kevin's been living as an adult for at least 5 years now, but I daresay their dynamic is far too functional and supportive to portray the average highschool sweetheart couple. Oh, and Benlie is DEFINITELY accurate in portraying the trainwreck teen idol power couple. I daresay Sherlock Levin deserved another point in entertainment. Hell, it should be a spinoff!

This was the final nail in the coffin for me to hate goop. He is so damn weak that it's ridiculous. They were already pushing it with Ben transforming Vilgax into goop before turning off the anti gravity disc and just ripping off the watch. But this trap shows that every time Ben turns into goop he becomes a liability. It should not be easier for ben to lose the Ultimatrix as a transformation then in his human form. Even grey matter didn't look this week when Ben was stuck as him in the og series.

And other times goop is unstoppable, impossibly strong, can fly, and slice enemies up with his gravity disk, his effectiveness is almost as inconsistent as gwen's. tbh i always thought it was a bit weird that they made an alien that was basically upgrade but can't upgrade and has a glaring weakness

@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 I doubt that recaliberated omnitrix have failsafe,derrick said that only complete omnitrix have failsafe and other omnitrix just have "self defence" mechanism which can save ben by making small force fields but are incapable of saving ben from much bigger and vaster explosion like bigbang but ov omnitrix can save him from literally everything!

I'm usually a pretty fair critic and even kind of a pushover when it comes to the "bad" parts of series and franchises, but this episode is one I clearly remember disliking at first viewing for all the reasons Kuro states in the video. If anything, a short recap was pretty generous of him. I was really unimpressed with how they handled Elena and, hate to say it, if this was the best they could do she might as well have just died off permanently in her last appearance or just never appeared again. I hate to dump on anything, honest, but the fact I feel so strongly about this episode is a little scary.
