I just bought this 1st generation Shootout for 172 dollars. After seeing 2023 offerings, I’m ok with that.

I have a shootout and it’s my favorite knife! I used to edc a bugout and now I feel bad because I always find myself reaching for the shootout, I love the weight durablility reliability and of course the looks, it is my first OTF so maybe that’s why I love it so much but it’s by far my favorite knife, I loved it so much I have the new cool gray one on preorder!

I bought this when it first came out. It gets more heavy duty use than all my other OTFs put together. It's a lightweight user that performs like a heavyweight. The cruwear blade holds a great edge and I've never had a misfire. I love that it disappears in my pocket, unlike my similarly sized OTFs like the Guardian Tactical Recon 35 or Microtech Ultratech.

I could definitely see this as a good user, and I also love cruwear..but for me what kills it is the pricetag the ergos with the button and the higher than usual amount of blade play, otf's are a strange world though and many of us who do like them don't always agree😂...the deadlock just needs to come down to $500 so we can all agree

Good vid, blade play is DEFINITELY sub-par, mine has football fields of slop in both side to side and also up/down. Side to side is really just ridiculous here though. Love the design, love the thinner blade stock, love the sorta rounded tanto shape. Hate the super cheap feel, and really hate the worst amount of blade slop in ANY of my OTFs and by a pretty far margin to boot. Overall, my opinion is that shootout=fail at this price point. For under 200 I could overlook much, but for 300+ I definitely expect more, and I believe that everyone else should too. Kudos to you for calling this out, good vid, good review.

It will soon be broken! Mine only lasted 6 months before the spring holder/ stop broke. The part is only .0025 thick. Unless redesigned, it will always fail unexpectedly soon.

I needed a glass breaker once. I accidentally locked my car keys in another car I just took to a scrapyard. They fell out of my pocket and I didn't have the key for the scrap car it didn't have one.

I have way too many knifes on my list I want to buy, but I cant afford anything at the moment. Its the electric bill OR a knife, and I usually end up paying the electric bill.

If a handle feels like plastic it's a NO GO for me....period. A tactile grip with some quality texture is one of my MUST HAVES... great review.

Dude for me what kills it is the price..the blade play..the button shape..at 300$ though I guess you could say this is part of benchmades new "budget" lineup😂

I’m glad I changed my mind about buying this a while back. I really liked the blade being in the center of the chassis & the contoured handle. However, many people had misfires & I felt the price was too high. Might get the kershaw livewire tho

I do like otf's but I do wish that the "no blade play" lockouts weren't only found on 1k$ odds like the deadlock..the knowledge is out there but manufacturers are resisting change

@@RollshamboYou basically want an otf to become a fixed blade. For an OTF to have little blade play is a good thing as it means the locks are not under too much pressure, So when the mechanism suffers an impact from the blade, this gap helps to disperse the impact. People talk so much about this Deadlock but no one has done a torture test on them.

At half the price I'd be more forgiving😂 but 300$ in OTF world gets you a better otf from heretic..microtech..guardian tactical... axial..it's too bad honestly I want benchmade to kill it but not just because they are a US brand

Benchmade has lifesharp, yeah it may take up to 3 weeks to get your knife back but they sharpen, clean, oil, and replace worn parts that affect function of the knife for the life of the knife for free. Microtech does a somewhat similar service but it costs $20 minimum every time you send your knife in with the same roughly 3 week turnaround time with a knife that’s generally more expensive than a Benchmade because microtech handles are all aluminum…. Warranty in itself I’ll buy a Benchmade over microtech because I can take it apart without voiding my warranty… I’ve drank a lot but look it up and I should be mostly right between these two companies

I think that it's great benchmade and microtech are finding ways to add value to the product since neither company makes especially cheap knives but for me a sharpening service doesn't do it because I sharpen my own knives(I realize not everyone does) that said on an OTF with springs and moving parts etc getting those worn parts replaced is pretty neat..overall there is value in the lifesharp program for sure but I dont think it justifies raising their already expensive prices without giving us the consumer anything we didn't already have at the much lower price beforehand...but now I'm curious. Did you buy it at the old price or the new price because if this was a 250$ knife I'd feel differently about it

@@Rollshambo I bought an Osborne with the translucent handle, I was lucky it get it on sale from BladeHQ for $200. I work in a paper mill so I use it regularly everyday, cutting rope, paper, plastic etc. not hard things but it gets used. I don’t sharpen knifes myself but to have a service that will do it professionally and make sure it functions like new is a win for me, I can use a cheapo knife until I get it back, and soon I’ll have a shootout and can always have a Benchmade on me while the other is getting worked on!

The MT's have a crap, super sharp button that I hate... it's like pushing broken glass... it doesn't need to be that sharp... And I have found the tips in MT blades to be very brittle and they snap off quite easily...

We cannot be pressed in 2023 about CFFN, one of the most stable and reliable modern materials and stronger than aluminum. Shame on Benchmade for not doing a better job marketing this stuff, but we're nearly a decade into high quality additive manufacturing and it's shocking how undervalued this tech is even among some professional engineers. Bunch of silly gooses, I say. If we could carry autos in my state I'd absolutely own a Shootout.

@@willblake72 yes my ultratech has blade play that I wouldn't accept on a folder. I understand that unless it is a deadlock that is something you have to live with in an otf but the one Shootout I checked out had a completely unacceptable (for me) amount of play.

I like my shootout better than my microtech. Less blade play, shoots out faster and much lighter. Blade with cruwear is awesome.

Hmmmm, a plastic OTF from benchmade with Cruwear steel that always needs to be sharpened and has poor resistance to corrosion for $300? No thanks… not only does Microtech do it better at that price point but they have 4 different options of OTFS to choose from. Ultratech, Utx-85, Dirac, and Dirac Delta are all better choices and they can all be had for $250 - 320.

Most of Benchmade’s lineup has become over priced in my opinion. Their new knife the Narrows msrp is around $500?!! Crazy to me, I could buy a CRK Sebenza for that
