I've had the chance to carry this Benchmade Triage for several months now and as an EDC knife with some extra features, I can really say I love it. Strong blade, rescue hook, glass breaker, G-10 handles, and a very solid build overall. Thanks to Knife Hog for sending this along for review.

I love this blade, I use it at work as my goto knife when Im running chainsaw. I like that it can safely access an injury by removing saw pants or deconstructing a boot. Also, living in northern BC Canada on the Alaska Hwy, the idea of having tools to help in the event of a vehicle accident is rather appealing. I wish more companies would offer more models with this sheepsfoot style blade. Cheers

Someone recently stole mine and there are none for sale online. I wish benchmade would bring it back, I'd buy 3. That knife was just ...me. I used it everyday at work 😔

I've been carrying this knife for a while Now. The G10 will destroy your pocket unless you file down the textured area under the clip. The steel holds a great edge and I have yet to sharpen it after 2 years. Being in the medical field, I love the thoughtful features needed for first responders.

Cool review. And in this type of knife, I think that I would, for the first time for myself, actually order one with the combo blade. Lots of good info presented....thanks!

Oh, and the strap cutter isn't N680 like the main blade. The hook is 440.

The aggressive texture is made for gloved hands. Firefighter gloves (structure gloves) are so thick that the user has limited dexterity and it's hard to grasp smaller objects. Auto-Extrication gloves are a little thinner and have better dexterity and usually a textured palm and fingers, but the heavy texture on this knife would still be very helpful.

So as a more so update for others reading the comments etc, I've bought one. actually two I keep one on me at all times no matter where I am, whether at work or out, its always in my pocket. Then I have another that I keep with my BOB. I bought the second after owning the first one for a few months. Either way, very very happy with it. Interestingly the sheepsfoot blade doesn't just work great for not cutting people like it was designed, it works amazing for stripping cable at work for me (electrician). So happy with it. Great EDC knife, also very useful up here for me in Canada since our knife laws etc are much stricter, basically if you get caught with a knife and say its for self defence...ya you'll be getting charged with carry a weapon lol. Say its for opening boxes etc you're fine. Problem being any knife with a spearpoint etc will be more vicious looking to our idiotic police force. That being said also having the safety cutter and window punch helps support the fact that it is a tool. I'm yet to ever get stopped etc but given it has emergency type tools, cant argue its an emergency tool say if you're in a car accident. Regardless very happy with the knife. Highly recommend it to anyone. Works great for opening plastic packaging etc, never had a problem with the stabbing like use of it. Considering it has no problem piercing heavy use cable like the ones used to hook up cranes, sump pumps etc. This pierces it perfect and with the sheepsfoot actually really helps to make sure to not nick the conductors.

Hey I just got this exact knife, and mine as a tiny bit of vertical blade play. Some people say this is normal with some axis locks, was wondering if you experienced anything similar.

My 917 triage does this. Ive found rotating the stop pin stops it for a while as long as you dont slam it open

How would you sharpen the rescue hook?
@EverydayTacticalVids

cwrowe There are a few different ways, but one is to put fine grit sandpaper on a pencil and run it down the hook.

What would it be like in terms of stabbing? Its more of a safety knife for me to emergencies obviously to get out of a car in the event of an accident with the glass breaker and strap cutter, also a handy EDC knife for opening packages etc. BUT in the event it was used for protection would it still work or no? I know the spyderco version of a sheets foot is pretty much completely useless had you ever need to stab into something.
@EverydayTacticalVids
@EverydayTacticalVids 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Chitussi I've actually been impressed with the stabbing ability. It's definitely not a self-defense knife but it'll stab into something for sure. The tip is rounded but not totally.
@JoeC92

Well thing being where I live in Ontario anything with a point like any other benchmade or spyderco can easily get you into trouble. There is no law against carrying a knife with intent as a tool, but the second its considered as a weapon whether it be for self defence or intent to cause harm to someone you can get in big trouble. That said you can still legally carry them as long as if you ever get caught with it you have a valid excuse and its not concealed. Normally I have my leatherman with me which obviously is just a multi tool not many issues there. The triage would be pretty good in terms it doesnt look to intimidating and also has the other few aspects of being a more rescue oriented tool. I dont see myself ever really being in the situation to protect myself given I avoid the rough neighborhoods, and I'm never on foot unless in a store I drive everywhere. But it would still be nice if it could be used if I ever had to.

Thats why I'm having a hard time buying one. GIven the steep pricetag of 215 here, not something I want to have and not be able to carry. There are obviously better knives to be used to defend yourself, but if all you had was this would it still be useable? Obviously would take extra effort compared to a drop point or spear point but would it work? Could you stab it into wood and have the blade stick in?
@EverydayTacticalVids
@EverydayTacticalVids 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Chitussi Yup - just not like a spear-point will.
@JoeC92
@JoeC92 8 жыл бұрын
so would just take a bit more effort but otherwise would work. And could obviously be used for slashing which at the end of the day would be better. Wouldnt want to kill someone, but definitely protect myself

If you have to pull out the strap cutter to cut a seatbelt or something, why not just pull out the blade?

Do you do rescue work? No? Me neither. I have two Kershaw knives that have a similar main blade. They are great knives but I don't carry them for edc. I carry a V. Trekker and a small neck knife. They can certainly cut a seat belt.

Are there any knives similar in size/price of the Ontario rat 1? Looking for something similar in fuctionality (hard use folder) that won't break the bank (under $40). Thanks!
