The product support from Benchmade is second to none. I had a minor spring problem with my 940 and Julie Morris at Benchmade could not have been more helpful. She e-mailed updates regarding progress daily and the issue was sorted quickly. All the more astonishing as I live in the United Kingdom. Benchmade even covered the postage. Fantastic service.

If you like the Osborne design but don’t want a small pencildick knife, get the barrage and take out the spring if you don’t like the assisted opening. It does detract from the benefits of the axis lock system.

Nice coverage of points for the edc knife. These all make sense to me and are similar if not the same things I look for. Maybe the only thing I'm more flexible with is the length. My current edc is the bench made mini barrage. This suits my needs and is easily sharpened yet has good edge retention. I like the Osborne a lot and considered it at the time I was looking. For a new bench made. However price point won out for the mini. Very happy with it after two years. I love bench made knives. I have a few others and am equally pleased with them as well. Particularly the bushcrafter, which I modified for comfort and function.

I love my 940 for all the same reasons and more! You didn't mention the ease of one handed opening/closing (with either hand) which to me is one of it's best features. I liked it so much I bought the dress up version (940-1 CF) for weddings, funerals and because Carbon Fiber is so freaking awesome! Great video btw, thanks.

Good points. Useage #1. I carry a work knife at work, but most of the time my EDC is for self defense. I have had to use it once for this, and my lock failed. #1 for me is a secure lock. #2 finger gaurd. #3 blade length. #4 ease of opening (one hand a must). #5 overall blade design. #6 handle grip. #7 good steel and reliable manufacturer. I prefer the Contego both with M390 steel, but the knife reviewed here looks fine too. I have fixed blades for in the woods, chef and steak knives for kitchen, and a filet knife for fish. It always boils down to the use, agreed.

Tom Card Just ordered one. Really wanted the carbon fiber with s90v but it's $100 more! That's way over priced from a company that charges too much to begin with. I'll see if it can replace the Benchmade 417 Fact as my edc. That Fact is a sweet, easily pocketable folder with almost 4" of sharp, stabby blade.

srg914 ehh carbon fiber isn’t all it’s cracked up to be , I just got my para 3 spyderco with carbon fiber scales and I hate it . The carbon fiber feels like a chalk board in your hand I ordered a standard g10 model and I’m sending this back or selling it

Very good analysis. Especially when it comes to weight...I keep buying knives over four ounces and then don't like carrying them. Just purchased the Ontario Utilitac...nice knife for the price but its a brink. I think I am going to thin my edc knives down to only those that weigh four ounces or less. Thanks for the video.

2 more things that I look for are ambidextrous use and lock type. I am a left-handed person and need my knives to be usable in both hands. Almost all knives are easily opened and closed by the right hand, but most are not truly ambidextrous, either because the clip is not reversible, or the locking mechanism is on the wrong side for a left-handed person... which leads me to the locking mechanism type. I do not trust or like frame- or liner-locks (including the Spyderco compression lock). While I know most people will say that they are trustworthy enough for the use, in comparison to lock-back or axis-lock, they don't compare. My favorite lock is the Cold Steel Triad lock-back, but I also love Spyderco lock-backs as well. My most recent addition to my collection is the Cold Steel Swift II (2015 edition) which marries both the Triad lock mechanism AND their new Flash-Tek spring assisted mechanism. Cold Steel also impressed me with their customer service recently, totally replacing a knife that had a small defect in it, no questions asked, and totally covered costs of shipping out of their pocket.

I agree with your points, but price is also an issue to me. EDCs can get misplaced, not regularly, but it has happened to me, and the more expensive the knife, the more often I find my self obsessing over checking to make sure that I haven't misplaced my knife. My personal choice is a Griptillian, but since I work in an office, I've been carrying a mini-Grip lately. 154CM is a pretty good steel, I like the weight and ergos (especially of the 551, but the 556 mini-Grip gets less attention around non-knife people), and they can be had for about half the price of an Osbourne.

If you’re only using the knife to cut soft materials like those mentioned in the video you don’t need a 940 Osborne. I’ve seen people use theirs to cut up cans, pry open paint tins, drive screws and strike ferro rods and sustain only minor edge problems. This is a HARD USE knife, you’re wasting a hundred plus dollars if you buy one and only ever pull it out at your office desk job or at home. This guy is a tacticool larper and it shows.

How much easier would my knife journey had been if I'd bought a 940 a few decades ago!?!!! Lol. I own 2 now. If it's time to send one in for sharpening and spa service...I just put the other 940 in my pocket. Oh well...at least I got it all over with! I even was tempted with a bugout...but it got sent back to the dealer..it felt like a toy compared to the quality feel of the 940.

Excellent knife and review. The fit and finish is very nice with the added bonus of not having to sharpen all the time. I've been using folders since the 60s for all around general purpose work in the bush, shop and otherwise. The BM 940 is my top choice from all the knives I've used to date based upon the very points you made. Today we have some of the best knife makers ever known. Like everything else, its all about personal preference to fulfill your purpose. If your $49.99 Knife fulfills your purpose, thumbs up. If my $200.00 Knife fulfills my purpose, thumbs up.

I have 3 benchmades with the axis lock all of the springs have broken year 1 ! What you need to consider about benchmade is that their quality control blows goats! I have proof ! My cooked river large crap in a box was deliver un- finished the blade was like a file on the slide it had lock stick that needed a tool to unlock ! All the handle parts were sharp enough to cut ! And later the springs broke ! The mini was delivered with a broken spring then the other one broke ! Got a 940 used so I didn't have the quality control bull shit later those springs broke ! And now the company is cutting up gun for the anti gunners in Oregon ( browns sister is the governor) !
