Thanks for this video. My piano tuner wants to do this on my upright the next time. I wasn't sure what he was talking about until saw this.

I always get nervous doing this b/c I have snapped a hammer shank- luckily it broke "just right" in the center of the shank

Thats good luck to break in the center (diagonally?) it is intimidating I think perhaps that’s a good mentality to have a calm but cautious approach when bending shanks. I do sometimes bend an offset shank and hear no tone difference do have any thoughts on tone improvements from alignment. Evan

@@RobertsPianosHouston I don't always notice a tonal improvement from aligning a shank. I have noticed a tone improvement from correcting a loose/tight center pinning: my mentor taught me to look at repinning as an extension of voicing.

To clarify no water is needed ? How do you avoid the hammer bending back? That happens to me...

No water needed. Water will warp the wood in unknown ways

It should stay in shape it may be the grain of the wood

I wonder if they bend back more if I use water. I think they need to soak for 3 hours impossible for this situation, or no water lome you do.

@@dappawap I wouldn't recommend soaking wood as it's difficult to control the results, much better to use controlled heat

I really like the convenience of the long neck on the lighter much easier than my mini torch

I don’t recommend using a small one as it will be too hard to control
