I know a lot of people think they seem awkward, but as someone who's read the book the blocking and choreography makes a lot of sense. Erik was obsessed and *needed* her, but he worshipped and respected her. So yes, he comes in unannounced but he goes around the furniture to give her space. And then when he says, "and I kissed you" he rushes to grab her, but he stops himself. Why? Respect. He won't touch her until she touches him. It really puts you into the world of the book, which I think is really cool. Outside of all that, it does a wonderful job of portraying just how much tension there is and that's really hard to do well. I think whoever directed this did an amazing job and paid immense attention to detail. And it paid off.

nicole mars I appreciate the kindness in your reply, usually I just see people jumping at each other over just a difference in opinion. And I will say, something that does make me somewhat agree with you and is probably my biggest problem with the whole musical is when Erik threatens Christine with her son (and it’s even worse in the Australian version because they insinuate threatening his life rather than just threatening to take him). I genuinely don’t think he would have done that. Because the whole point of the end of PotO was that he grew up and learned that people weren’t toys that he could do whatever he wanted with, that’s not love. And threatening her that way completely undermines that theme of growth. But I enjoy the rest of their interactions I think.

Certainly it's a lot less over-dramatic than Anna O'Byrne fainting like a diva. 😅
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose Жыл бұрын
@@hbdragon88 To be fair, I'd expect Christine to have a dramatic reaction like that after learning her Angel of Music, the man she thought dead for the past decade, comes waltzing back into her life out of thin air like it's no big deal. Plus, I think it's a neat representation of how, almost immediately after Erik returns, Christine (quite literally) falls back into her old habits around him. But I've also loved that one version of the London show where Christine's first instinct is to hug him, a reaction reading in that instance as "Oh my God, Angel you're alive!" (joyously relieved) before she pulls back suddenly as Erik catches her wrist like "Oh dear God, Angel you're alive?!" (shocked and hurt), while also just being plain sweet to watch. I appreciate the OP's read of them being restrained in this version due to their overwhelming emotions, but in that initial moment when Erik arrives during the instrumental, I feel Christine should have a more visceral reaction to his return than just staring and backing away. Everything else after that was great, though.
@RangerA52 Жыл бұрын
I like both versions. Ramin and Sierra’s is full of, as you said, restraint, holding your breath so to speak, slowly letting their walls shatter, and the willpower to try and not give in to her emotions immediately… controlled passion. Ben and Anna‘s is full of anger, angst, hurt; getting everything off their chests all at once… explosive passion. That’s why I like both versions. I get to see two possible responses to a really weird situation, and I think both are done beautifully.

So much shame and pain, the way he dips his head and his posture slumps and he refuses to be close to her. There's something so insanely powerful about their chemistry, about how respectful and gentle he is. He learned a lot in those 10 years, he's matured. But he's still lonely and self-loathing, so much he sabotaged his own happiness and broke both their hearts and somehow Ramin just conveys it brilliantly.

So, after seeing the officially recorded version, I do agree that these two have scads more chemistry together (to make the sexual attraction more believable for this song) and they both put a lot more emotion into their performance, versus being technically better sung. And after seeing them together in the 25th anniversary performance (the ending especially), this storyline is much more plausible. Not that the timeline matches up AT ALL (the writer in me cringes) but still more believable.
@iluvlafferty4 жыл бұрын
Why Love Never Dies works for me: the revelation that Erik (the Phantom) and Christine have a son adds emotional weight to the final scene of the 2004 Gerard Butler POTO movie. Raoul sees the rose & engagement ring that Erik left on Christine's grave and accepts it; if you match it with LND, then Raoul is acknowledging the peace and shared love they have for Christine. That way, it's a beautiful full-circle love triangle arc.

@@iluvlafferty I agree with you. LND ACTUALLY WORKS or at least potentially can!! 👍👍 I HAVE THE PERFECT SCREENPLAY IN MY MIND OF HOW THIS STORY SHOULD GO TO ME 🤗🤗😎😎: 🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥 1. Gaston Leroux book's flashbacks when Madame Giry talks to Raoul of Phantom's life in order to understand Erik past and traumas and personality so that the audience can feel empathy and compassion for his miserable and sad life 2. Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary version (with Christine looking back to Erik with love eyes and singing to him the first lines in All I ask of you in the ending that fix and makes the sequel understandable and believable because in this version their love/unique bond they share is mutual and not one-sided) with only making the choreography in Point of no Return less aggressive in the end and more seductive as it should be and as it was in the 1986 production [with Phantom first redemption at the end finally understanding how to express real true love] 3. Love Never Dies with a few changes in the plot holes (like more explanations of characters arcs and personalities changing - Raoul and Meg - during 10 years and more explanations on how/when Christine and Phantom one night stand went and the deep reasons behind Christine decision to come back to find Phantom after having left him in the end of POTO to follow Raoul who was at the time an healthier choice for her) and with set/costumes of AUS Version but with the original London cast (my dream is one day this version will be record by ALW). [at the end Phantom gaining his final peace and redemption at his son's side due to his son's love] 4. POTO movie ending with the rose and ring on Christine's graveyard (with changing dates in order to fit time-line) and old Raoul visiting the auction at the restructured Opera Garnier (beginning of POTO musical) and Christine's grave in a kind of travel to remember the past times he is finally acknowledging the fact that no matter how things went or who was her true love and soul mate or who she choose at the end: after having considered Phantom an enemy his entire life on his last days he peacefully recognize that they both loved her deeply and each one showed it to her in the way they could/were able to THIS IS THE PERFECT FULL-CIRCLE LOVE STORY OF SOULMATES ERIK AND CHRISTINE 😍😍 AND PERFECT FULL-CIRCLE LOVE TRIANGLE 🤧🤧 THESE 4 ELEMENTS COMBINED ARE THE PERFECT GOTHIC, PASSIONATE AND HEART-WRETCHING LOVE STORY EVER 😍😍😍😭😭😭 IT WOULD BE A MASTERPIECE 🤧

Can we just talk about how in this version, it feels like they actually KNOW each other? Like there has been a long history between them? The one with Anna and Ben was good and all, but all the changes in blocking made me feel like they’ve only known each other for a few years at best. They were sort of all over each other the whole time, not to mention the lyrics of Christine’s first verse were significantly altered. Sierra’s lyrics are, of course, “I should have guessed that it was you…” and Anna’s were “So it was all an empty lie…”. In this one, like others have already pointed out, their movements are restrained, not because they are awkward, but because they are feeling too much. I adore Sierra and Ramin together ❤️. No matter how many Phantoms that Sierra has been with, or how many Christines that Ramin has been with, Ramin is Sierra’s, and Sierra is Ramin’s.

The fact that she flinches at one point when he walks towards her, the fact that they're apparently scared to touch each other, the fact that he seems to understand how intense it must be for her to see him again. I agree completely, these two have a lot of unfinished business gone unsaid and it shows. The Australian one doesn't feel like a pair of people with a complicated and traumatic history the way this one does, it feels like two exes that split on bad terms accidentally going to the same party.
@sunflower-xi5ctАй бұрын
@@blueturtle3623 I always find it interesting to watch how two actors play the same scene so differently…Anne definitely leans more onto Christine’s anger here, which is a valid way to play it as the Man left her after taking her virginity and ultimately knocking her up. The Phantom, even though we know his actions and intentions never were to hurt Christine, still ended up putting her in a very dire situation where if she hadn’t had Raoul available to marry her and the ability to pass her son off as his child…who knows what would have happened to her and Gustave? I look at poor Fantine in Les Miserable and can’t help but wonder if that might have been Christine’s fate. So yes her anger is warranted BUT I LOVE that Sierra plays it more heartbroken, Sierra shows us her pain more then anything, her Christine seems so broken, from losing her Angel, to Raoul’s coldness towards her and his drinking, and having to raise her son alone. She is trying so hard to keep it together but the fire has left her eyes and all her interactions here with Ramin’s Phantom just scream ‘I gave you EVERYTHING, how could you leave me! Don’t you realize I love you!’ 😢

For context, I've never seen anything to do with Love Never Dies. But I figured "I've heard this song is good, and I love Sierra Boggess, I'll watch this" and when the doors dramatically opened to reveal Erik just standing there menacingly I WHEEZED

I'm here because I love their performance on Phantom of the opera 25th anniversary show which is available on KZfaq until the end of the day. I shipped her with Raoul but damn, she has chemistry with Phantom especially on the final act

I really hope they release another filmed version of Love Never Dies this or next year! Especially since it’s been 10 years since the 25th anniversary with Ramin and Sierra. Their respective ages would be perfect since LND is supposed to be 10 years after POTO, and having a filmed version of the same cast would just be perfect!
@ladygrumpycat4 жыл бұрын
BlackPearl Moon Apologies for the late reply! Perhaps, but I think in the book the Phantom is at least in his 40s, if not 50s) (Ramin is in his early 40s) and Christine and Raoul are in their 20s, add on the 10 year time jump from POTO to LND, their ages would be, in a word, ideal 😂

For anyone who watched the first play (The Phantom of the Opera) a couple of days ago here on KZfaq, know that starting Friday April 24 at 7pm BST (2pm EDT, 5am AEDT) the whole "Love Never Dies" show will be available to watch for free here on KZfaq, possibly for the whole weekend.

I just love this version with Sierra and Ramin!!! They add chemistry, sensuality and genuine emotion that others don’t. Ben and Anna may have more operaish voices because they were both opera trained but Rierra brought great voices and great performance, the entire package. Ben and Anna just looked fake and wooden together with no true chemistry. The subtle touches Ramin adds is BREATHTAKING and his gentleness at moments just BEAUTIFUL to watch!!!!!

@Tyler Buckley Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman never did Love Never Dies, though. I think the comment was about this show specifically. (Also, I far prefer Ramin/Sierra's POTO to Michael/Sarah, but that's a different point.)

I really don’t get why they never record the first original shows? Does anyone know why? If they sold the dvd years later I’m sure all Broadway fans would still buy them in a heartbeat. More like I think it’s a record of their talent, just all this art missing with no record. (Yes I know there is Cd version but sometimes the live version are so much more passionate!) So many original shows, I will always beat myself up for missing Anastasia.

Listen...... as an avid lover of POTO (and someone who is also named Christine) I hate this sequel so much, but.... man if these two had reprised these roles in the Australian recording that was released, I might have fallen for this. I might have acually liked it. I absolutely adore this Phantom/Christine combo. Ramin and Sierra always bring their all, no matter what script they're reading for these characters. This was a great performance to watch! ❤

Beneath A Moonless Sky Andrew Lloyd Webber, Simon Lee I should have guessed that it was you I should have known it all along I chanced you in this dark I should have heard you and that song How dare you try and claim me now? How dare you come invade my life? If you had known the pain I've known Then you would know I had no choice Oh, Christine, my Christine In that time when the world thought me dead My Christine, on that night just before you were wed Ah, Christine, you came and found where I hid Don't you deny that you did That long ago night That night Once there was a night beneath a moonless sky Too dark to see a thing, too dark to even try I stole to your side to tell you I must go I couldn't see your face but sensed you even so And I touched you And I felt you And I heard those ravishing refrains The music of the pulse The singing in your veins And I held you And I touched you And embraced you And I felt you And with every breath and every sigh I felt no longer scared I felt no longer shy At last our feelings bared Beneath a moonless sky And blind in the dark, as soul gazed into soul I looked into your heart and saw you pure and whole Cloaked under the night with nothing to suppress A woman and a man, no more and yet no less And I kissed you And caressed you And the world around us fell away We said things in the dark We never dared to say And I caught you And I kissed you And I took you And I begged you With a need too urgent to deny And nothing mattered then Except for you and I Again and then again Beneath a moonless sky And when it was done before the sun could rise Ashamed of what I was, afraid to see your eyes I stood while you slept and whispered a goodbye And slipped into the dark beneath a moonless sky And I loved you Yes, I loved you I'd have followed anywhere you led I woke to swear my love And found you gone instead And I loved you (How I loved you) And I left you (And I loved you) And I had to, both of us knew why We both knew why And yet I won't regret From now until I die The night I can't forget Beneath a moonless sky And now How can you talk of now? For us, there is no now

@blaskostoneisded3 жыл бұрын
@@ilgnkoc3020 6:50, as they say "beneath a moonless sky" u can replace with, "we're simply meant to be." And basically every time they say that line. (It's just a small piece of the melody, but it's pretty noticeable to me. ) Mr. Weber often will lift little phrases from other stuff. Not exactly "theft," more like "subliminal influence," maybe.

I saw Sierra and Ramin in LND in London in 2010 (wow 10 years ago). A year later the DVD came out and I was disappointed as it was nothing like the show in story or quality of performance/ singing. As much as I wanted to give the Australian cast a chance, I can't help but be frustrated that I don't feel... Anything. I'm seeing the anger, the "this fucken psycho really think he can boss me around again" but none of the love they're mutually feeling but restraining. Sierra and Ramin gives me that, that sweet contradiction of the love that your heart wants but you know isn't good for you.

I love these two together. By far the best castings for Erik and Christine. The only issue I have is with Love Never Dies as a whole, sure it's not considered a direct sequel, but it still continues the story. There are countless continuity errors and plot holes in Love Never Dies that don't add up with anything in Phantom of the Opera. On its own, Love Never Dies is actually really great, which seems to be a controversial stance.

LND reinforced what POTO already established - Christine and Phantom are soulmates. It's a Gothic romance; Erik & Raoul offered 2 different lifestyles. By the end of POTO we saw that she had genuine feelings for him & didn't fear him, but they knew she needed a chance at a normal life; that's why she walked away with Raoul.

Mrs Shabooski - Rebel points out a very subtle nuance YET AGAIN that Ramin throws into the embrace at 5:23. Notice how Erik ever so gently traces his fingers down the side of Christines neck. It’s so subtle you can easily miss it. But just keep rewinding and watching. You’ll see what we mean. THIS is why I think Ramin is such a badass at his character work. He throws in these simple and subtle nuances that add to the complexity of Erik (Phantom).

I saw Love Never Dies twice - In Fort Lauderdale, FL and in Nashville, TN. Now that we are unable to attend shows, concerts or theaters, listening to this song feels so nostalgic. As if this music is a memory of a life we will never get back. Thinking about musicians, actors, singers, ballet dancers, all those professions that took the hardest hit, yet are never mentioned in the current political or media narrative. They are out of their job and nobody knows if they will ever perform again. The world seems to have come to a cultural standstill. Maybe forever.
