I know even Solomon himself praised Ford, because he was a kind man and that "under the circumstances"" he was good, and he wrote in his book that if all people at that time were like him, slavery would lose 50% of its negative image. I find this POV to be understandable to a degree, but still weird. Basically, Solomon's praising someone for taking full advantage of the injustices going on, but being nice about it. Ford didn't like that slaves were beaten and treated bad in the "shop" where he bought Solomon, he didn't like they were separating kids from the mom he was buying, but he did it anyway. He knew it was wrong, but he still wanted to own slaves for years and years and of course, he used them for hard manual labor, kept them in poor conditions, etc. I sometimes think people like Ford are morally even more questionable than someone like Epps (Michael Fassbender's character). Becuase Epps was openly despicable, he didn't sugercoat his desires to control and use slaves. Ford on the other hand acted like he was appalled by the slaves' treatment, he took the moral high ground, but he took advantage of the system anyway. So really, he wasn't doing anything to resolve the situation, to free the slaves, nothing. Ford was a major hypocrite and the movie IMO showed this rather nicely. I mean - there is no way owning another human being can be "nice". Even if the law allows you to do it, you taking advantage of the injustice and thinking "well, I at least treat them cordially and nicely unlike most people and everyone should too" is pointless. The entire fact you're even able to buy them, the entire law itself is inherently inhuman and wrong - there's no way to be nice about it. And saying "OK, I of course will go along with this totally ugly, not nice thing in the law, but I will be nice about it so it's easier on those who are subject to it". You're not helping anything like this, you just want to eat your cake and have it too. You want to be just as selfish like the rest, but you want to still feel how you're a nice human being better than everyone else. It's basically arrogance combined with hypocrisy.
@Loll0saurus3 жыл бұрын
I guess he should've tormented them then, I'm sure the slaves would've loved your great insight.
@PiCheZvara3 жыл бұрын
No, but it's like the saying goes - all it takes for evil to triumph is if the good people remain indifferent to it. That's like when they took away Jewish property from Jews during WW II in many countries. Aryanization. If it happened to your neighbor who was a Jew and you would take over his store for example, but you would be apologetic and cordial - how exactly does it help his situation? You're basically partaking in him being robbed of his possessions, but because you do it in a cordial manner, it's somehow good? If the guards in concentration camps were cordial too, does it change the fact the Jews were robbed of their freedom unjustly? You can't just hide behind the law - you have your own head. Brad Pitt's character says it in the movie - laws change, but universal truths remain intact. And that's the truth. If Ford was really so good, he easily could've helped free the slaves, give them more decent conditions, etc. But in reality, he actually wanted slaves too even if it was against their basic human rights, but he was just a wimp to admit it to himself and tried to ease his conscience by being nice. It makes the slaves' lives easier, no doubt, but it's not stopping slavery.

@PiCheZvara2 жыл бұрын
@@Nova-cg5su Exactly as you write, he easily could have done something different. But slaves were more convenient, afforded an easier life. So again, he took advantage of the unjust system, but he felt guilty so he was at least more nice. @@magentateacarlton7740 All true. I would not underestimate the indoctrination of child in slave owning plantation families tho. He GREW in this system: biases, and beliefs will form onr way or another. The existence of slaveless territories in the north could be enough to make someone doubt the necessity of this system, or maybe not. How one’s raised is how one will see the world in life.
@enriqueperezarce54856 күн бұрын
@@magentateacarlton7740Gotta remember he is a morally good person at heart, but he GREW up in this system, and honestly given he did he wouldn’t be able to move up north given he would be uprooting not only his life but also his family’s. Ford is a sympathic character for me, but it doesn’t absolve his responsibility in participating in slavery.
@joshthrower5657 Жыл бұрын
Ford comes across as a good man or at the very least a man who tries his best to be good in an evil world but the line “I have a debt to be mindful of” shows he is just as deplorable as all the other slavers and equally guilty. This movie is so powerful I’m mostly speechless when discussing it other than the highest of praise in invoking emotion from the viewer. Masterpiece

It's ironic how the good ones are actually the worst in some ways. Because he has his humanity and yet ford still chooses to oppress people.

That's the line that stuck out to me too, and which sealed my opinion of the character. Certainly the least of all evil, but an evil nonetheless

Not all slave owners were bad. There are several examples throughout history. The problem was that South was poor and they were not ready and scared of industrialization because they thought that they will become poor as machines are expensive. But still Pitt's and Ford's character was good.

Give me a break!!!! Exploiting fellow humans and owning them as property is despicable in itself
@MustafaAli-lb8dq Жыл бұрын
@@Emmenimaliste It was normal back in the day. You know what's despicable? Stealing other people's land, massacraring the natives and calling it your own which is America itself. Even Muslim countries in the past didn't commit atrocities what America did to natives. But now colonialism is not practised. Well, Technically it is still practised such as sanctions and propagnda media but not practised on the surface. Similarly, slavery was common back in the day. The only despicable part was when slaves were treated badly and like animals. But now slavery is abolished which is good. So my point is right while you are wrong. I defend the Ford's character. I see him as a good slave owner and maybe a good human being. Just maybe.
@Emmenimaliste Жыл бұрын
@@MustafaAli-lb8dq there is no justification for animal exploitation either. Also, regarding steàling land and massacring people, the UK did that worldwide as well (Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, etc). You cannot justify one evil with another evil.

About as common as shitty ones. But yes, some slaves did have the luck of being treated relatively well. Some even had the luxury of having their families not sold off. However, when slave owners ran into financial trouble, some were forced to split up their slaves’ families to avoid financial ruin.

Nought to do with hiding history
