Florida Winters are truly unpredictable! Some of the cover crops we grow here at Sandhill Farm are sensitive to frost and decline over the cool season. Ryegrass is an excellent solution and substitute for anyone looking to grow a Winter cover crop and is even beneficial!

3rd year for my mimosa ground cover and I'm totally loving it...but I'm still recovering from my new neighbor spraying the fence line, my fence, with herbicide, it's drift killed banana, Mexican sunflower, papaya, fern, jasmine and plumbego bushes...I was planning to plant passion fruit on the fence this spring...he's a snowbird, so it's not like I can confront him right now, he even sprayed the lake edge...I hope he likes the pink paint I just painted my shed that is totally visible from his kitchen/Livingroom and the flock of plastic flamingo that wander my native grasses...wait till he sees the mural I'm planning...give a hoot, don't pollute…!

Milkweed Dreams do you know what he sprayed? May be good to plant a buffer zone with plants/grasses that will survive the sprays and protect your property.

I live in the Ocala Horse Country. All of the farms cover crop with perennial rye grass. It is great for grazing and it keeps the pastures green.

Seed at Halloween, mow at Thanksgiving. Rye will start to die out when temps stay up in the 80s, later in the shade. The spring/summer equivalent here in FL is brown top millet. Just like rye, if it touches dirt of any kind and water, it WILL grow. BTM dies out with 1st frost, just in time to start over again with Rye. Keep the BTM mowed so it doesn't set seed...unless you want that for dove!

I first began to consider winter cover crops when I saw a doc on Masanobu Fukuoka in '83. He used rye grass (I think). Originally he had red cray that was unworkable. He had to learn how to create a fertile top soil. He killed off his inherited orchard. That would have stopped many from becoming farmers. Not him. He kept going until one day he had a "revelation" after a nap. He awoke and suddenly he "knew". He had to very carefully observe nature first, discovering what was happening, and then act. He called this "do nothing growing", i.e., taking no destructive actions, staying out of nature's way. This did not come easily to him because he was a scientist, a specialist, a Dr. of microbiology. Seeing the big picture required a new way of thinking. He pioneered the next step, beyond organic, into a natural way of farming.

@Templar How do you know the execution was correct, his philosophy was understood, where it supposedly failed? Sixty years ago eating/growing organic was called a hoax. People who touted it were referred to my mainstream doctors as "health nuts". In the '50s I had trouble growing organically but it was my fault. I was learning. If I was like many I might have testified that I tried "organic gardening" and it didn't work.

Always plant the winter rye. Just seeing the green every day keeps the winter blues away. Then it dies off and aerates and feeds the soil. Win, win, win situation.

Why do all my young avocados seem to get about 9 or 10" tall and then instantly die? It's like a fire blight. There's no significant change in the weather. It's always at about that same height, doesn't seem to be seasonally dependent. It's like they leap to life and then right before I expect to see some real strength, they turn like leaves in a Northern Fall.

Good question man. No weevil injection points? They like shade the first few years. Also need lots of water in the dry season.

@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL I'll redouble my lookout on those pointers. Maybe could have used a little more shade. The only thing to do is try again. Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
