he's really not awesome for doing the 50p thing, I don't doubt that his intentions are good but the 50p idea is terrible for those people. If money is short why buy 1 loo roll for 50p when you could buy 4 for a pound. Doesn't sit right with me.

@@jackowen6929 This reminds me of people saying they are so short of money they have to buy dogfood to eat. Dogfood is more expensive than human food, e.g., average tin of dogfood is 8 quid. However, a loaf of bread is 1.50, 0.79 for lettuce, 0.89 for a tomato, 0.69 for a bag of pasta. You could basically buy 5 days worth of food from poundland for the same cost of a tin of dogfood.

This is very sad and informative. I've not watched this series before now, but it seems these people feel trapped but don't know how to move on.... or don't want to because they see it as an opportunity to stay right where they are. No one should live this way forever. Being raised in poverty is a curse, but not life-long sentence. I'm hoping that the people are working to get the kids of the neighborhood into better positions to move on than they had.

No Kelly, a Counsellor for Vulnerable People, particularly people like Fungi. I have never seen Big Brother, although it is based on George Orwell's 1984 and so although it is supposed to be reality TV, it's not an actual reality. I am commenting on the street within the programme and the genuine care that Dee showed to her neighbours with clear vulnerabilities.

'One of the main characters, ‘White Dee’ - real name Deirdre Kelly - was portrayed as a streetwise single mother-of-two who uses her knowledge of the benefits system to help her neighbours in James Turner Street, Winson Green, a deprived inner-city area of Birmingham. But the Daily Mail can reveal that while the ‘mother of the street’ may look out for those living around her, she once had no scruples about stealing more than £13,000 from the city council which employed her. The theft included envelopes of cash given to social workers to look after by ‘most vulnerable’ tenants. A court heard Kelly had worked as an administration assistant for her local authority in Birmingham for seven years but began stealing cash and cheques from a safe, while manipulating paperwork in a bid to cover her tracks. Kelly, now 42, was rumbled by an internal audit. She claimed in court that she had used the cash to feed her partner’s crack cocaine habit and pay bills.' She is pure brown.

Look to the Eastern European’s of the 2000s - hardest working folk ever. I personally think the biggest form of entitlement comes from native Brits. It is difficult to move forward when people have heavy debt addictions and health issues.Without the benefits system a lot of people would really suffer even die.Sometimes lazy manipulative people milk the system have no scruples about doing it a shame because it affects everyone namely those most in need but some people just don’t care.Anyone can fall on hard times problem is the longer you are unemployed the more difficult it can be to find sustainable work.

they dont need to return. The show served its purpose. It wasn't for our entertainment or for these people to tell their story. There was a followup debate special featuring White Dee, Mark/Becky, 50P Man, and Birmingham council reps and other pundits and White Dee and others said many times that they didn't know the show would be about _benefits._ The crew came back to do Immigration Street and they got ran off the block and cut production. These people only did Benefits Street to exploit that benefits is an economic crisis for native Brits while being an easy way for foreigners to settle in; it was all Brexit propaganda, "let's polarize the country. Let's show them that the benefits system is broken, let's show an upsetting truth but provide no opinion or resolution, let's have the country split pointing the finger at the other side. Well we should get rid of benefits because this is how they live and they shame the country and waste money. Or, we should get rid of benefits because look how it aids foreigners. Or, we should reform benefits and provide more money even to people like in this show who are the worst examples of first world reality and even if it upsets anti-benefits people." And it worked. Around this time, we were spoiled with UK docs about Benefits. Then the Referendum was announced and now the only thing you can find on UK telly is Gordon Ramsay and Love Island and Bake-off and Strictly Come Dancing lol.

@Francis O'Mahoney I enjoy watching these documentaries, is there a problem with that? Its good to get an insight of how other people live. And it motivates me to keep working hard and saving up. You're the one who sounds bitter and jealous, my comment must of hit a nerve. Wasn't it giro day yesterday? Lmao that's laughable, I am in no way jealous of these fools. It's more frustration because I get up and work everyday yet these people everyday is the weekend. You sound like a fool.

entitled? you seem inhumane. The government should do a better job enabling the underclasses a greater standard of existence. It is literally the gov's failing responsibility to look after the people and these people are clearly not getting the help/ guidance/ funding they need. I don't care what anyone says, the working class are demonised and this works in the favour of the upper classes.

Good point. When I lost my job during the height if the pandemic I went from having enough to live on and then some to having not enough to buy food. I bought only essentials and barely had enough for those. Some benefit claimer have the latest technology and car. Plus smoking and alcohol. Oh and buying lottery tickets. They live life of effing Riley. Effing charming. I resent the government enforcing closure of businesses due to lockdown. The plandemic was hideous. Hardly the Spanish flu thst wiped out 2/3 od Europe. But hey, panic and worry is good foe the government in an attempt to keep the commoners compliant.
