Aditi Mangaldas (Born in 1960) is a leading dancer and choreographer in the classical Indian dance form of Kathak. Aditi was brought up in Ahmedabad, where she also did her Bachelor of Science from Saint Xavier’s College. With extensive training under the leading gurus of Kathak, Shrimati Kumudini Lakhia and Pandit Birju Maharaj, Aditi is today recognised for her artistry, technique, eloquence and characteristic energy that mark every performance. After completing her dance training, she travelled to many part of the world as a part of Birju Maharaj"s troupe. Besides dancing and choreographing classical productions, both solo and group, she has broken new ground by using her knowledge and experience of Kathak as a springboard to evolve a contemporary dance vocabulary, infused with the spirit of the classical. She has won much critical acclaim in major dance festivals across the world. She heads the Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company - The Drishtikon Dance Foundation.
On the second night of the Bengal Classical Music Festival 2017, a growing audience watched renowned Kathak dancer Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company alight the stage with a fiery solo performance. Aditi Mangaldas and her disciples from the Drishtikon Dance Foundation graced the stage in the vibrant colours of a peacock, shades of green and blue, and began the first piece for the night- “Utsab”. Beginning with a devotional 'Surya Vandana', Aditi and her students symbolised the essence of Bengal Classical Music Festival - that of celebration and joy.
What sets Aditi apart from many other Kathak performers is her knack to go beyond technique. The second part consisted of Aditi Mangaldas performing a solo nritya, or an expressive style of Kathak. This was both seen and felt in the second piece of the night, as Aditi took on a solo performance to a Sufi Qawwali “Chashme Mast-e Ajabe” by Amir Khusrau. The solo piece was filled with expressive and evocative hand and eye movements. She performed pure Kathak, but her experimental self was evident in the selection of music and the manner of her performance, with beautiful poetry sneaked in between soul-shaking tehais. For her solo, she was clad in a gorgeous shade of magenta that enhanced every one of her moves.
The third piece, Tarana, was performed by her students. The white and silver costumes they wore emanated peace, but were brilliantly contrasted by the rigour of the piece itself. Set to teentaal, the piece focused on rhythm and stamina. The dancers made sure to make full use of the vast stage, as they moved about like a cluster of white butterflies, all fluttering their wings to the same rhythm.
