I find that the booming symphonies of Mahler help me write. I like to blast his Third Symphony into my ears every now and then.

It may sound weird, but you're one of the few KZfaqrs I've been able to listen to in the background while I write. I appreciate your videos and I plan to listen more.

Your brain is like an empty warehouse and has to be filled. Fill it with good stuff: great books, movies, poetry, art, life experience and you'll never have writer's block.

This is the best video on writing I have ever come accross. Down to earth and packed with truly great tips. It would be a great pleasure hearing you more on that topic if you feel like sharing again. Thanks for what you do on this platform, you're perfect!

i love the honesty about how writers write, if you're not writing consistently you're not really a writer. people try to shake this into something they feel is less "pessimistic" and they try to soften the blow, but the reality is: wanting to be a writer is vastly different from being a writer. and writers want to write, nearly without fail. that's just the truth of it, coming from a guy who spent WHOLE SWATHS OF TIME NOT WRITING. i was going through a MASS of mental illness struggles, but ultimately, i was not a writer, as such, because i was not writing.

Wonderful energising talk, what’s great is that it is applicable to any field, not just writing.

I just discovered your channel, and it’s instantly become my favorite. My issue with writing is should I focus on my literary/higher brow short story projects or my commercial/genre stories which I’ve previously made money on from Amazon self-publishing? Art or money? Where to focus.

As I am trying to find my find voice in writing, I started a journal. It wasn’t at first, adjusting and I would often feel compelled to do it rather than doing it with joy. But that’s the thing, when you discover that you have a skill you have to put an effort to draw it out and make use of it. I also use Pomodoro. Thanks for this video. 😊

This is absolutely amazing!! Thank you for making this video. Also, I was wondering if you could make videos on how to improve writing and how you were able to become a prolific writer? I struggle to write like the students my age, especially when it comes to writing creatively for applications to universities in the US.

Stacking habits that's a nice term. I think that your anti-laconic advice is sound but I've read it more compact. 1.- Design your space for the thing you're set to do. (If you write, remove all distractions like tv and set a mahogany desk). 2.-Do Atomic Habits (An easy and simple task that is elemental, but compounds with other habits). 3.- Link (Stack) Habits, like walk for 30 minutes early. This helps set you on track and get endorphins and is easy to stack with your writing. The thing is, in order to carve time, you should try to beat procastination. The best method I know is the pomodoro technique. My problem isn't that I don't know this, I just can't control the feelings I get when I write. Not because I write really emotional pieces, they're kind of boring. But I just can't get this voice inside my head that I'm wasting time and time wasted is a crime, and all crimes are payed due in pain.

I agree with the vital importance of reading for writers. Pardon the crude analogy, but reading is like porn for a writer: you read and get excited and think, yes! I want to try this!

I wrote stories from the age of ten, but started writing every day from maybe the age of fourteen. I kept a diary, wrote poems, stories, everything really. Then started writing seriously with a view to make a career out of it around the age of twenty-one and managed to sell a few books under pen names. Currently just writing short stories :) What about you?

Benjamin McEvoy wow thats incredible, i have enjoyed writing most of my life, I have had a diary from the age of 9 (and still keep one am 17 now!) and i remember starting off with writing songs just playing around when i was about 10 and i wrote stories and plays around that time and used to boss my sister around to perform them with me 😂 i enjoyed writing gothic-esque scary short stories from about 11-12, now i write mostly poetry and some short stories occasionally, i’ve also had a dream journal for 6 years as i typically have 2-7 dreams a night! so its a lot of writing for me but i love it ! thats also so admirable you have made a job from it!

@@mollygabrielle4171 Wonderful stuff! Sounds very similar to me. I loved the gothic - even studied it at university. The dream journal is a great one, sometimes those dreams become stories!

Are you interested in getting a PhD in english literature or is a B.A in english literature from Oxford equivalent to a PhD from other universities? There are many fiction authors with no college degrees or degrees in other fields, e.g. mathematics, engineering etc. Do you have interests in these other subjects? How about science fiction? Thank you for this video. I think it will help me in other projects of mine. I find you to be an interesting, compelling person and have been wanting to ask you these questions.
