Love LOve LOVE the tree fern. Brought back memories from 20 years ago when i attended a Hardy Plant Study Weekend here in Portland Oregon and one was awarded to me as a door prize! Thrilled, of course. Had it a couple of years, but lost it during an unusually cold winter storm. Nice to see it in your garden. It is a show stopper for sure. I really enjoy your videos. You really have so much knowledge of the plant world and always look forward to what I can learn from you. Enjoy Ireland!. My brother and his wife are going there this summer. I understand they have lot of roadside wild fushias there.

Benji, make sure you water your "punga" fern tree in the dry periods as they do like moist soil. I probably would have planted it in the opposite corner, where it has a bit more shade. They also like a small amount of epsom salts dissolved in water in the growing saeson. The fronds, or new leaves will grow if it is in a happy place, so keep an eye on it. Also a bit of ground cover around it will help to hold moisture. They're actually native to New Zealand. Our forests are full of them and they grow extremely tall when competing with kauri, rimu and kahikatea trees. Hope this helps, Jo Massey from NZ

I believe the plant used for the construction of the brooms is called "broom sorghum," "broomcorn," or Sorghum bicolor subsp. bicolor (There seems to be other plants commonly used as well, your broom looks like the bristles are made of a more rigid material). I brought a small broom back from Thailand this week, and I've always enjoyed the shorter handles and effectiveness of Thai (and other SE Asian) brooms! I can usually find the larger ones at Lao and Thai shops in the back where the Kiwi knives and kitchenware are located if anyone is looking for one 😂

I have to suggest visiting Jimi Blake at Hunting Brook Gardens in County Wicklow if you can make it while you're over there. Although I'd say you know about this special spot already? Also, if you're in Dublin city centre, it's worth finding the Iveagh Gardens for a quiet break in the middle of town. Enjoy your Irish travels when you head over there!

I find it amazing that most of experiences are somehow shared. The Vietnamese broom you showed is very similar to the "vassoura de palha" that we have here in Brazil. The main difference is that ours have a stick attached to it. And, like you said, its very helpful!!! Anyway, loved the vlogs and your videos!!!

Watching you carefully “paint” the glue as you reassembled the broken pot made me wonder if you’ve ever dabbled in painting! 🎨 You were doing it so carefully. Greetings from the home of your tree fern. I can't see from the video if it is a soft or rough variety - the rough (cyathea australis) has prickly hairs at the base of each frond and there are round scars on the trunk from where the old fronds once were attached. On the soft variety (dicksonia antarctica) the whole trunk is basically a root system and you can cut it off at any point on the trunk when transplanting. In my experience both need good shelter and shade, lots of compost, and to be planted at a depth that supports their trunk to be stable. They need a lot of water in the dry or wind in the first 12 months after moving them. A trick I learned from an elderly man who grew native grass trees (xanthorrhoeas - my favourite) was to pour a bucket of warm water with a cup of sugar dissolved in it onto the roots every month for the first year. It fed all the microbes in the soil that these varieties are so reliant upon as their root system can be delicate. I have found this helps the tree ferns to survive their move as well. They also like dilute seaweed products. Love your garden, your home, your Vietnam vlogs, and your videos, Benji, and I am envious of your beautiful ceramic haul.
