This video has been banned and later automatically edited for using a brief clip demonstrating a DX7's use in Laura Branigan's music. I sincerely apologize to both Laura Branigan and WMG for damaging your business, as I'm sure millions of people have just listened to a 5 second clip of "Self-Control" with me talking about FM synthesis over it on loop rather than just typing the song title into KZfaq and listening to it that way. YOU ARE DOING THE LORD'S WORK WITH YOUR NOT AT ALL PEDANTIC AND RIDICULOUS COPYRIGHT TAKE DOWNS WMG!
I promised myself I'd make this video under 30 minutes long. I failed. If you have a stick, don't shake it at Arturia's V Collection, because there's too many synths.

Hey guys. I'm sorry about my NOT mentioning of Dieter Doepfer. Of course Doepfer is a huge, vital player in the invention and evolution of Eurorack. I was just referring to Buchla Vs. Moog's interpretation of early modular synthesizers. My focus for that part of the video wasn't on the history of modular synthesis, but just how a Buchla differs from the more common subtraction groundwork originally laid out by Bob Moog. Dieter, if you're reading this, I'm sorry and I hope you've spent all my money over the years on something really cool, like a Jet Ski or one of those robotic mattresses that adjusts to the contour of your body.

"Bob Moog invented what we now know as Eurorack." Just an instance of the bizarre trend of equating "modular" with Eurorack. 32:39 Look! It's a giant Eurorack!

Was the arp 2600 used by queen making the Flash Gordan soundtrack I wonder? Because when you played that filter it sounded exactly like one of the coolest parts of that soundtrack, when Ming the Merciless walked in and set everybody straight.. including his own daughter. If you heard that filter.....that meant your ass.

Between the CS-80, Fairlight CMI, Jupiter 8, this collection saves *at least* $30k if you're even able to find any of them on the used market (and just forget about looking for a Synclavier unless you hit the lottery,) and they all are highly detailed and sound incredibly convincing! Those three alone make Arturia's softsynth collection worth it, and everything else is a very nice bonus. Plus, the Fairlight is sort of my personal "holy synth" (well, technically a sampler) because I'm a Mark Mothersbaugh fan, and Terminator 2 is one of my top 3 favorite movies (technically T2 was CMIII and Emulator II, but the CMIIx is the closest thing and significant in its own right.)

Hi Benn, just sort of stumbled across this. I have never used soft synths, being a bit of a hardware guy and doing as much as possible "out of the box"....with boxes.... I just wanted to say that I found you style of presentation so amusing and engaging that you had me hooked. I watched the whole thing fro beginning to end. As a result I now want to investigate the possibilities of soft synths. I guess for those of us on limited budgets they are a bit of a "no-brainer". And you have a new subscriber. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Arturia's "Collection" has grown a lot in the last few years, and it's worth noting that you get about $200 off the full "Collection" if you've purchased a Keylab controller. Analog Lab comes with the controller. It has many of the sounds, but you can't edit them. I just recently bought the whole Collection so that I could have full editing of the sounds. It is amazing.

I have the V Collection 6. What I find striking about this edition of the package is that the DX-7 was in some ways equal to or superior to the Synclavier even though the Synclavier cost 10-100 times as much. (To be fair, the more expensive packages for the Synclavier included sampling, recording to disc, sequencing etc. It is also striking how bad the raw Fairlight samples sound. That people were able to make listenable hit records out of these sounds shows the craftsmanship and artistry of the people making those records.

Whilst I don't think I ever want to experience virtual Benn ever again, this is easily my favourite look at the Arturia Collection. The Blade Runner spoof was sublime, alone with the other weird historical clips, but best of all was just letting the synths do the talking, with occasional interjections of additional information.

Hey Benn, really enjoy your reviews and demos. I would love to see more about your process. You have a lot of great tools, software and hardware at your disposal. I've been getting into modular/eurorack which is really fun but of course, it's more work than just loading up a VST and poking around and it's much more expensive. I'm curious why you like using certain tools. What do they mean for you and music creation? Does the modular just give different results because of how you interact with it or do you get sounds you simply can't get in software or is it both? And thanks for making these videos.
