At our hourly rate at EP it would be too costly to straighten a blade so we just install new ones and the scrap weight of bent and cracked or worn blades pays off nicely at the scrap yard. Our crankshaft straightener came from Stens and may be made by the same manufacturer but they are great tools that do the job. I used a dial indicator on ours to determine each mark on the gauge is equal to 0.010" and with straightening to 2 marks there is no noticeable vibration. Originally we would smash the crankshaft with a 8 lb. sledge and use an old blade adaptor to protect the crankshaft. Well done video and a real money making tool to invest in if your in the business or flipping mowers.

Well if I would have bought a new blade. I wouldn't have a video on how to fix one. HaHa. I think the stens crankshaft straightener is the same as the mighty midget.

@@doublewide6Good point Bob but just wondering how balanced you were able to get it and was this just for a video or do you do this for customers because some have asked us to and we refused. Mainly for safety reasons on the blades we have no issues straightening crankshafts

I'm always impressed with the quality of the briggs andstructed motors because they tolerate such abuse without having to replace many other parts such as the main roller bearings on the drive shaft.

Some people do it with a hammer some people do it with a pipe, but a dedicated machines gonna get it way closer

I have one but its a homemade one i picked up for $40 with briggs clutch wrench it had 2 sleeves also but lost one of them but its helped me out on mowers i repaired also 🔧nice job on the repair and the blade

Good video! I used to do this on my first job as a small engine mechanic! With the set up my shop had we only would do the long shafts. the short shaft crankshaft would be replaced. We never fixed a bent blade though. Good job!

You’ve come a long way in the last 3-4 years. I already had bookmarked your video on crank straightening from 4 years ago and your technique on this one is so much better! Your shop looks very different too. I was surprised to learn one could actually straighten a mower blade using a press instead of a smoke wrench. Now, if I only had a crank straightener. And a press. Well, one thing at a time. 😉🔧👍

Good work there. Usually on something like this , I part out the engine and scrap it. I have straighten 2 cranks before with a mini sledge hammer. And got it close enough but they weren’t very bent to begin with

I used to scrap them, but then I got the crank shaft bending thing and now I always just straighten them never had an issue

When I first saw crank bending tool on your channel I was floored! Beats the hammer method! I use to get a lot of bent crank shafts from the local land clan. He disappeared and so did the bent cranks. This year had 3 and it has me thinking if I should just bite the bullet and get it. Great fix as always! Lowes selling craftsman push mowers with bags for $400 plus tax

He should’ve never straighten that blade out he should’ve never straightened the crankshaft out for a customer because he will be in court will not crank chef comes off the blade lumps of the guys foot

Impressive you were able to bend the shaft back to true. I am surprised it did not damage the flywheel key.

Yes, I know the timing was right because it started right up in one pole. It would’ve been a good idea to pull the fly wheel. Just a double check.

Fixing a blade like that it’s pretty easy to do with a press. I probably have a spare to sitting around too

it's a great tool! nice work. I find it odd that the shaft key doesn't sheer, I saw my neighbor hit a pipe in the yard and it broke the frame away from the engine. something ain't quiet right 😂😂👍👍👍

I built it. I got the idea from a guy’s channel it’s called housemaid on KZfaq 2 x 72 sander.

I've looked up the Bent crankshaft straighting tool to get it fixed up those things are not cheap

Use a pipe on the end of the shaft and something pointing at the middle of the shaft to see the bend..... Not as accurate but works.

Yeah, they’re about 300 bucks so if you did to engines with the crankshaft straightener, you’ve already paid for it

I agree with you dude he never got that blade perfectly straight and he put it back on with a partly bent crankshaft he’s opening himself up to a lawsuit with the crankshaft brakes already weekend
