Berlin has a reputation for being a football black hole compared to other major European cities. Could this be the season all that changes? Union Berlin have been promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time ever, while Hertha Berlin have lofty ambitions to compete at the top of German football. And when you delve deeper, the city has a lively and diverse lower-league scene. Kick off! reporter Dave Braneck finds out if Berlin is finally on the verge of becoming a true football city.

To my eye, Berlin is already a football city, in the sense that any given weekend you can catch half a dozen matches if you want to. I did exactly that in November 2016, watching anything from… Hansa 07 vs Kreuzberg (girls) at a no-name fussballplatz, to Hertha vs Mainz at the Olympic Stadium. On another note, I find it really-really-really frustrating hearing the word “soccer” in a football-related story on G E R M A N DW. Give me a freaking break!

Germany is different. The football capital of Germany is probably the Ruhr Valley, a region of different cities, where the city borders don't exist. You probably wouldn't notice, if you switch to another city by car or train, it's close. In around 50 kilometres you have Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund, VFL Bochum, MSV Duisburg, Rot-Weiss Essen, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and a lot of other clubs which are well known around Germany. But i hope Berlin will change, it's a good start with Hertha and now Union in the Bundesliga (hope they don't get relegated). The main problem in Berlin are the immigrants from other german regions, who bring their own club from that region to Berlin (for example there is a big Stuttgart Community in Berlin). Will be interesting to watch, how Berlin develops.

Well, Berlin has a lot of good Clubs too. Tennis Borussia, Victoria Berlin, (Reinickendorfer Füchse), Union, Hertha, Dynamo, Lichtenberg 47. I think that those Clubs would have been atleast BL2 teams if Germany were never ever splitted.

Yeah, also Hertha (and the other Berlin clubs) have a big potential of fans from the turkish community. I have many friends who's parents are from turkey and they are crazy about football. Unfortunately they are supporting mostly turkish clubs. In my opinion, the club should focus on winning them over, since they are so many potential guests for the stadium!

Let me say it straight out-loud, Berlin is not like other cities, its a weird place full of weird history and weird people, weird doesn't mean bad though, it just means standards of other cities don't apply there. and this is coming from a Berliner. (not the donut lol)

Great documentary! Could you also take a look at Leipzig? It's a town with two clubs which were very big in the past (Lok Leipzig & Chemie Leipzig) but now are playing in 4th/5th division for many years. The rivaly between both of them is still very extreme, also because Chemie is mostly left-wing and Lok mostly right-wing. For many years they don't saw high quality football in Leipzig until RB Leipzig marched from 5th division into the Champions League (with a lot of money from Red Bull). RB Leipzig is successfully now but is also one of the most hated clubs in Leipzig and in whole Germany because it's not having any tradition (founded in 2009) and they just bought their success.

DW Kick off! In other cities when the weekends over people will forget about football and go back to their normal lives, in Glasgow it defines everything about a person, their friends, their beliefs, their political views. You could have a 2 minute conversation with someone and figure out what team they support. Even though the football in Scotland pales in comparison to the premier league the people in Glasgow are still fiercely loyal to Scottish football and for a country of five million and a city the size of Manchester to have two teams getting 50k plus fans is quite something I think rangers were still getting similar attendances in the 4th tier. Also unlike other cities in say Ireland or other smaller countries you won’t find many people supporting the big European teams. Another thing I found is as much the old firm hate each other when someone from another countries puts them and Scottish I football down they will still back each other up. I’m from Carlisle and studied in Glasgow for four years it was a great experience in a great city.

Rangers are a Scottish Protestant team with roots in Glasgow and support from all over Scotland and Britain. and also support from the immigrant ( homecoming) Ulster Scots Protestants who came over from the Protestant areas of the (Ulster) Northern Ireland. celtic were the product of Irish catholic immigration in to Scotland (especially the West of Scotland). Berlin is a sports city with top teams in basketball, ice hockey, volleyball and handball. That is much more interesting than being a soccer city.

Maybe Hertha would be more attractive to people if they changed their name. Hertha is an old woman's name. Imagine "Agatha Madrid", "Harriet London", "Winifred Rome", "Mildred New York".....those teams couldn't possibly be "cool" teams.

Rome is the capital of Europe, (with the exception of Cardiff) with the least number of championships won. Naples is the largest city in Europe without the football derby.

@@unclecarrot8000 Yes, you are right, at the moment St. Petersburg has removed the primacy in Naples, until a few years ago in St. Petersburg, in addition to Zenit, there was the Dynamo of St. Petersburg which for many years I play in the First Division, and minor teams of the città were the Lokomotive and the Saturn and the Saturn-Lokomotive, when these two merged. However, Naples remains with the distinction of being the European city to have never had a derby in the first division.
