In this Video I wander around the various subway stations of Berlin, weaponed with my Leica M6 and a roll of Cinestill 800T. The lenses I use are the Voigtländer Super Wide Heliar 15mm f4.5 with the external viewfinder and the Voigtländer Color Skopar 35mm f2.5. My best friend Basti (who has nothing to do with photography) did most of the filming in this video - special shoutout and special thanks for that!
Film developed and scanned by Safelight Berlin (not sponsored - I wish though!).

I’ve never shot Cinestill, but if you’re looking to lessen the halations I’ve heard that a diffusion filter helps with that. I noticed that some of your photos had some starring at the light sources. In my experience / research this comes from shooting at the smaller apertures (f8-f16) and a diffusion filter will help get rid of the starring, too. I personally use a 1/4 diffusion filter.
@KarinMajoka
@KarinMajoka 4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Stitt I never saw the light stars as something to get rid of since I often enjoyed the look of those. However, the idea to use a diffusing filter is pretty cool indeed, I was thinking to get a black pro mist filter at one point to diffuse the light and get a more vintage look in some situations. They are unfortunately pretty expensive, but in case I will get one I will for sure also try it out on a future roll of cinestill. Thanks!

Jokes aside... one trick I do while metering for night with an external light meter is putting the meter really near to the position f the lens, that trick Is used for large format but it is useful also for smaller format, otherwise, great video! I am more in love with Cinestill 800t now!

Karin, the more I look at these Berlin subway photos taken with Cinestill film the more enchanted I get. I have not used Cinestill film but find the pictures to be like using a very fast color reversal film. I still use Fuji Provia F slide film (love the detail and color of reversal film) and may try Cinestill at some point. Shooting at night where there are lit cafes, shops and bookstores would be ideal--if only the normal night life would return here in California. Your shots were marvelous and you looked so cute in that video too. Regards.
@KarinMajoka
@KarinMajoka 3 жыл бұрын
You have my respect for shooting slide film in challenging conditions such as at night. I love shopping slide film from time to time (Provia and Velvia are my favourites), but definitely feel a bit nervous due to the fact that it does not handle over- or underexposure well, so it's even more important to get the metering spot on.

Karin, I am loving these available light shots you made with your Leica M6 of the Berlin subway. The lighting is soft and the colors in the station area give a relaxing and slightly mysterious mood to the pictures. You motivated me to get a more portable & easily collapsible tripod in the process. You timed the photo shoot well when commuter. traffic is less which gave you more opportunity to get the station into the shot vs people's heads. You concentrate and care about your craft, and you do not rush your shots which is great. Must be summer when you did these because your attire is light and are not encumbered by heavy coats--a win. Good job. Even w a mask I can see your smile. 🙂🙂

You will not regret that decision. Cinestill is not a cheap film for sure, but with all of the three rolls I have shot so far I felt like they were worth every penny. Would be interesting to hear about your experiences after you shot it. And: thank you! Even though it is mandatory in Germany to wear a mask in closed spaces such as the train, a lot of people to not follow the rule. It was uncomfy but for me this is not a reason at all not to put it on.

@@KarinMajoka The stations in Tokyo can be very interesting and I love a lot of the left over 80's and 90's angular but sometimes playful design. Thanks, Madison! ⚡️ Oh, that’s unfortunate, the London Underground must be pretty nice for Cinestill as well. I don’t even know how the rules in Germany are, but at least late at night there is nobody to through you out 😬

Karin, you ARE an Artist. Just like you, I like to walk alone with my tripod, trying to capture the beauty in the cold Nordic nights. If you are ever in Helsinki, Finland, I would be very happy to go on a photo walk with you and buy you coffee as my respect for your work. We have some interesting architecture and cool light installations, that might interest you. Keep up the great work! I know you are not after fame. And, that's why I believe you will garner a lot of it very soon! Viele Grüße aus Helsingfors!

Hey Sid, thanks a lot for your comment, I truly appreciate it! I was struggling for a long time to see (my!) photography as art and I am still not there yet - but, getting feedback like this helps to grow more into the idea that art can be any sort of expression. Finland is for sure on my list, since it seems like such a fascinating country to me. I’ve been to many places in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, but somehow never had the chance to do that little detour to Finland. So in case I‘ll make it there one day, I‘ll let you know! What are your favorite subjects to photograph? ⚡️

Hey @@KarinMajoka , It's so kind of you to take the time to write me back. I appreciate it very much. :) As any artist worth their salt, I am sure you are your biggest critic. It sucks, and yet, it's essential to keeping us on our toes, humble. Finland would remind you a lot of Copenhagen, Stockholm and St. Petersburg (if you've been there). There is a part of Helsinki, that is preserved still and showcases the architecture from the Russian regime. And, then, the modern architecture is very functional, minimalist. I will find you on Instagram, so you could see what I like to shoot. But, to answer your question, I shoot medium format and my subjects are usually dark alleys, people and oddly lit things and people. I love shooting in the night. What about you? What inspires you to go out and shoot? Vielen danke, nochmals! :)

@@sidm.9982 That pretty much hit the nail in the head, I am very self-critical regarding my work, and while it can sometimes be a pain because nothing is "good enough" it surely also pushes oneself to go further, rethink things and try again. I have been living in Oslo for a while (and visited Copenhagen and Stockholm several times) and was always fascinated by Scandinavian architecture and the clash between old, historical buildings and modern, cold, glassy ones - so I can anticipate. Interesting insight, I will for sure check out your work over on instagram. Well, that's hard to break down to one reason, but basically I would say that I always seek for a way of expression and ways to understand other people and myself which motivates me to go out and shoot. So basically I enjoy photographing people (on the street but also portraits) just as much as urban landscapes and human residue, if that makes sense.

Thanks Hashem, I really appreciate your comment! That's true, just the lightest offset of the horizon looks pretty skewed with such a wide lens. But it was a lot of fun to try to compose differently with this one.
