The fire was reported around 2:00 P.M. at the Society Hill Development on Woodward Lane in Bernards Township Somerset County. Firefighters were pushed down the stairs by a roof collapse early in the fire. Apartment units on the east side of a fire wall were saved from heavy fire damage. The Lyons VA Hospital Fire Dept. and the Liberty Corner Fire Company were first on scene.

50+ years ago when I was a kid and my dad was a Harrisburg, PA City Firefighter, he taught me the basics of fighting house fires... feeling doors before opening, crawl out rather than running out, and I remember him also telling me to direct the water to the base of the fire, not the height of the flames and smoke as I witnessed on this video. RIP dad, and thanks for the many lessons in life you gave me over the years.

I love reading the ridiculous comments people post. There really are a lot of people that have a lot to say about something they have no clue about or they do understand what they see happening because they've been there themselves and have witnessed their own departments do the same thing. It's very easy to be critical and judge other people's mistakes once you've committed them yourself and now "you know better" and are so full of advice and experience. All the comments about watering the lawn, there's an original one! A real knee slapper there.

My sons apartment complex burned down in feb 2021. It was so heartbreaking to see all those families lose EVERYTHING. There was snow on the ground and my daughter in law was standing there barefoot. Thankfully EVERYONE got out. (It happened while they were asleep) my new place to donate to is Red Cross. They took my daughter in law at 3:00 AM and gave her a brand new pair of shoes.

I gather there was no aerial apparatus in the initial response? This fire was begging for a quick overhead attack but I didn't see an aerial truck until near the end of the video -- Far Hills - Bedminster Truck 29 and Lyons Truck 115. Both seemed to have arrived too late to be of much use.

When the members of your fire crew choose to ignore you having fallen down a concrete stairway and the Chief Fire Officer on the fire grounds summarily steps over your body and proceeds on without even inquiring as to whether or not you are injured, it's quite conceivable that you are not considered as being of much value to anyone you work with. This would strongly suggest that the time has arrived for you to seek employment elsewhere outside of the fire profession.

I really did feel sorry for that dude. He was in full gear when he fell & the camera caught the fall. I know that dude was hurt. His back his chest, his ribs, lungs. To just by pass like he doesn't even care. Heartless. Capt. Dick didn't have an air tank or mask so he shouldn't heave been in there anyway. He is about to become a victim himself. That fire kicked this crews ass. Everyone of them.

I have to say, I live literally 2 minutes down the road in another complex, I left my house around the time this fire was involved and I didn't see anything.. The FD for this town is wonderful (as well as the police and rescue squad) to get this under control in the time they did.

Glad to hear this. All firefighters are dedicated and want to be professional. Otherwise, why bother right? The job has so many subtleties that a video can't really capture everything. There is a lot more to it than just "spray and pray." I do think they did a good job, considering what they faced when they arrived. Thanks for your thoughts and observations bro!

The flimsy sub-standard construction of these apartments is outrageous. Look at this! Its a wonder people were not killed or gravely injured. Thank God almighty no one was hurt. I have seen fires like this in new buildings and it just is so outrageous how these places are just slapped up with plywood, cheap wood and substandard construction. Good job to the firemen trying to do the best they can.

Sad, but no casualties? Is it me, but it appears that the USA FD never seem to be in any rush to put a fire out?
@charmcitytoe
@charmcitytoe 6 жыл бұрын
@Steve White - It would appear that way. But for a lot of different departments there are different reasons. You never see NYFD, Baltimore City, DC or LAFD taking their time, I tell you what! LOL A lot of it comes down to training and "Chain of Command" understanding. When everyone knows what they are supposed to do, after size up occurs, everyone gets to work. But if that same "down the line" theory isn't taught early, you get a lot of firefighters standing around waiting for their assignments. Sadly though, fire doesn't wait to see what everyone else is going to do. ;^) And sorry if I left any departments out, but those are among the ones that I am most familiar. I'm sure others can add to that. Chicago Fire probably operates pretty efficiently as well.

Steve White There is usually a good reason for it and one of them is *If you are one of those people who don't send donation to their local fire station, then their fire station may or may not go to their house to put the fire out.* I learned that from someone who volunteered at a fire station as fire fighter.

@@ivanivanov2164 stop it , stop it now. No stupid excuses please. The bulk of the fire is through the roof, the only place that fire is spreading is, upward. That Master stream was over-shooting the objective spot.

@ivanivanov2164 5 жыл бұрын
@@fmartinjr Why stupid? Most probably they would do better by hitting the bulk from aerials which I didn't see in the vid. When an inferno grows to flashover, it spreads in all ways due to high temperature, not the direction of flame. In this case it was a good decision to focus on localizing the fire from ouside and inside the house, and not on hitting the bulk.
@fmartinjr
@fmartinjr 5 жыл бұрын
@@ivanivanov2164 the spread of all directions had been over, the bulk has already vented through the roof! Like I said, there was too much over-shooting at the bulk of fire. And I don't think you're stupid, just the reasoning you gave for this master stream operation.

These condos look like there was some thought in their construction. There appears to be possible firewalls between the placement of stairs and the next set of three. The firemen were smart in stopping the further spread before attacking the initial burning ones. They look somewhat newer, so they must have had sprinkler system. It appears though it started in the attic so maybe nothing there to prevent spread other then the stairway?

Looks like suppression to me - keep flaming bits from flying off the apartment and possibly spreading the fire to neighboring buildings. Their first goal is NOT to save the apartments involved - they're long gone - it's to protect life, then keep the fire from further spreading. They also were cooling the roof of the units on the other side of the firewall, to try and keep the fire from jumping it. Once they had a "firewall" (ha, ha) of cool around the site of the fire, the hose teams moved in to knock it down internally.

Dick, It's o.k. for to go running up into smoky fire like that with no gear? I do not think so, he should have known better, as he's suppose to be in-charge of what the hell's going on here. Not running around up in the fire trying to check on his guys. Another note, never take your masks off while your running from the smoke & fire. Yea, you can't see, but you take your mask off, now you can't see, & you can't breath. 4 of them guys came down out of there unmasked. That fire kicked their ass. I don't mean to arm chair quarter back, but these guys need some serious hands on training, including the chief. Just a little insight. Very dangerous & glad everyone made it out. You don't even see the dude after about a minute or so he does get up. It's taking him so long dude, because he's hurt. Inside. Broken Ribs, Lung damage from the fall. After he leaves you don't see him anymore, that's because he trying to walk off the pain. It won't work. The Chief's an "Ass-Hole", If you watch close, it looks like he actually kicks the guy as he steps over him. This "Chief" is a classic idiot. It is ok for him to go stumbling up into a smoky fire with no breathing apparatus , as he is the holly grail. He is not immune to the dangerous smoke that will kill his ass one day. We used to train so we were ready to suit up and enter a building in 60 seconds. Almost always had full gear on by the time we reached the fire.

Not true Kavboi, you are probably looking at a volunteer department, probably a bunch of teenagers. Their chiefs are just older versions of them. For the most part they are taught to surround and drown the fire from the out side. Larger, paid department members spend many months just in training before they are allowed to touch a hose. These volunteers all have nice equipment but sadly they don't how to use it to it's fullest potential.

People comment on the lawn watering. How does a firefighter knowwhen putting water into heavy smoke and fire where the building is supposed to be. That structure fell apart real quick. So you can't see and your told to put water on the top floor. Give me a break most of the commenters could not even do the job

I was always taught that you fire a fire from the bottom up ..... that way the doesn't have a chance to spread to other areas because they are saturated already .... fighting fire from the top down allows the fire to spread to other areas and the effect of the water on the fire is minimal .... I've seen many fires and they always pump water to the top and not from the bottom up and it is always the case the structure is always destroyed. On multi storied structures you always see the fire spreading from the top down and not from the bottom up I' m not a firefighter but always was told from my youth to my old age fight the fire from the bottom up...........................

Why was thefireman on the back side of the building spraying the waterstraight thru the fire and was watering the grass on the front side. It would've been a lil more effective if he put the water on the fire
@albertastorms
@albertastorms 7 жыл бұрын
Anyone know the cause? My guess is it started on that third level balcony where there was a 90 degree piece of ductwork on top the air conditioner. By that location the probable cause is either a BBQ left on too close to combustibles, cigarettes butt still burning in a planter or a garbage can, or a less probable cause a faulty porch light. The fire from what it looks like entered into the soffit vents of the building roof and spread. The fact that the balcony had suffered extensive damage with no fire coming out any windows with heavy fire in the attic when firefighters arrived on scene has lead me to this scenario. Now I have other theories of where and how it could have started, however to keep this short I posted the most likely scenario.

It is a wood fire right? Why they not wait till the fire chrashed the full house - all appartments down the roof fully with black smoke or water - and the house insurance pay later the new house ... In Europa we use firewalls between appartments since over 500 years - why the U.S.A. can not imported so good ideas?
@ffjsb

You don't know what you're talking about... There ARE firewalls, they're just not brick or stone because our buildings aren't 500 years old. And brick and stone buildings can still be destroyed by fire.

People don't understand that you just don't show up and put water on a structural fire. The electric needs to be taken out either by transformer fuse or a line fuse. Even if you pull the meter or shut your main breaker off, the line side is still hot. The gas needs to be shut off as well if installed. I'm sure the Coordinator was doing all of that since he is the one who has the radio glued to his mouth. Or at least confirming with dispatch. But yeah, the deck gun guy needs better aim or better field instruction from the other side.

I agree- You are an embarrassment to our brotherhood When the members of your fire crew choose to ignore you having fallen down a concrete stairway and the Chief Fire Officer on the fire grounds summarily steps over your body and proceeds on without even inquiring as to whether or not you are injured, it's quite conceivable that you are not considered as being of much value to anyone you work with. .I am a safety officer in NY and our greatest asses is our volunteers sho put in hundreds of hours for absolutely no compensation- I have almost 2000 hours of training interior and exterior and we always look out for our brothers and sisters- really pathetic behavior for a surround and drowned-- and my condo was the one bottom floor on the right-I lived in the Basking ridge area, Morristown, Madison and Convent station for over 30 years- By the way we use this video to show what an aerial ladder truck should not do- don't shoot the water over the burn and down into it- !
