Bernese Mountain Dogs being stubborn! What to do when the pre-teen adolescence kicks in....

Hazy is eight months old, she started to "selectively hear" me starting at about six months old. So I revisit much of the basics with her in a positive but firm manner. I STRONGLY suggest staying in obedience classes with your puppy for a full year. As their body changes so does their brain, their training needs to continue with them while they grow. It's like give them elementary school without middle and high school. Keep going!! The relationship with you will change and your training needs to be a constant communication for them to be successful.

We have 2 BMD boys (brothers) and we have trained with them from baby age when we call there is a reward, now they are 3 years old and it works great. What doesn't work at all with BMD is a loud angry voice or ignoring, BMD are very sensitive and always want to please their people 🤗

Hazy was born at the same time as my Berner, as I can't tell you how this video helped. Echo is doing the exact same thing, we have been in training but gosh. Mind of her own and strong personality! I have also been feeling my dog doesn't love me. I know this is silly as dogs love differently but I just wish she would cuddle me more. But I get we have a warm climate and it is hot most of the times. Thank you so much again Stacy!

Some dogs are more snuggly than others. Chase, Hazy's mom and Deuce her dad are very snuggly, Hazy really isn't. On occasion she can be, but she is very independent and doesn't really snuggle like her mom. Maybe she will when she is older, time will tell. Glad the video helped!

Thank you for this. My boy is 5 months old and I get soooo frustrated when trying to get him to come inside. I’ll walk up to him to put him on the leash and he runs away or barks and runs. I have been rewarding every time he comes in but started to feel like he’s just never going to listen. This gives me hope and I need to work on not letting it frustrate me so much.

Yes, it is the start of adolescence. Patience and daily fun training sessions build the relationship with your dog that they trust you that coming is fun. Now, Hazy still doesn't want to come at almost 2 years old when she knows it's bath time, but that is understandable. But she will "down" and "wait" for me to come get her. I'll take it. I always reward for them coming in the house! Reinforces that behavior!

Our first Berner liked to escape and be chased up the street. I learned to play his game. I chased him, then he chased me, right back in the gate, every time.

Running away from them works well, dropping "dead" also can get them to come back to you, both things to do when in serious situations. Otherwise 100% always reward with food (I always have treats on me) and use a happy voice.

I have a 2.5 year old male and he's the devil but in a good way (shoes and slippers poof). Stubborn is an understatement, mine is food driven and my pockets always have cookies in them. Easy to train dog and they do love their families. Leash training is still a problem for me, I use a choker chain and it helps but my Bernese pulls me around quite a bit if I give him slack to sniff around, if i keep him close he's ok. Great dogs and smart as a whip, his food has been a problem as he is allergic to chicken so he's all beef diet. I boil some beef cubes with brown rice and add it to his kibble. Great to see this video, thanks very much.

Check out my video on leash training. It does take some time to actually train on the walks instead of making walking your goal. If your dog is food motivated you have the upper hand and can be more exciting than the other things. Also, making sure shoes and slippers are out of reach is your job to help keep him successful :)

Love your videos Stacy! Do you ever say something like “want a treat?” Or yell treat to get your dogs to be more interested in listening/following commands? I feel like that’s a common thing I hear dog owners say.
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 4 жыл бұрын
I don't because to me that isn't asking them something. I don't ask my dog if they want a treat, ever. I ask them to recall, "go", get in, etc. Now, if you use, "Fido Want a treat" as your recall word, that's fine. But then you can't say "come" and expect the dog to do what you want. Dog's don't speak English, they are responding to a command that they get rewarded for, so what ever you call it, be consistent with what you are asking of them.

My 10 month old BMD doesn't lick hardly at all, but she nips? This year has been a hard one with financial stuff and me being sick. I haven't been able to get her to a trainer. Is nipping and not licking a Bernese thing?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 11 ай бұрын
I am not sure the two are mutually exclusive. I haven't had many dogs who lick. However, nipping/teething/biting should not be tolerated. Is he nibbling on you? Or biting? If you don't like it, then do not tolerate the behavior. You can redirect using some tricks or other behaviors. Or toys. But I would not allow him to continue.

My 4 month old is starting to bite and growl hard again at me. She was doing well when she was going to dog daycare because she was able to get that energy out but hasn't been able to go for a week due to kennel cough 😫 will this stage end? It looks scary when she gets like that!
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 3 жыл бұрын
Two things...commit to 2-3 10 minute training sessions with her a day. Can be in a hallway in your house or kitchen. She needs to use her brain if she isn't using her body. It is up to you to help her learn good ways to get her energy out and thinking is one of them. Second, get her out for some exercise. Go to a place there isn't other dog, a trail, a quiet park. Jog around the neighborhood. Help her be successful!

I’m still having stubborn issues at 15 months( intact male). Is this normal at the age and hormone level?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be. It's good to do lots of fun positive training. Be more exciting than anything else and build anticipation for the treat and wanting to work with you. If you establish a leadership role your dog will want to pay attention to you. However, sometimes you just need to pull the "mom card" and make them do it. I never let my dogs win, I always get my way, whether by food, positive reinforcement, or me being stubborn myself.

My berner is now becoming stubborn with her food and being extremely picky! She just turned 2 last month.. She’s eating treats and drinking water and going to the bathroom but refusing her food.. 🤦🏻‍♀️ any tips or ideas to help improve this?

I would first have your vet check her out for any medical issues. Then I would look at switching up the protein source in her food. Eating one food their whole life isn't good for them. You wouldn't like it either :)

Hi, I just went through this with my 2.5 year old Berner and he was allergic to chicken. We had to do an ultrasound and found out he had IBS or the dog version, we played around with a fish diet and we're now onto a beef/brown rice diet mixed in with a high protein beef/pork kibble. Definitely see your vet and discuss diet.

I couldn't hear clearly but you shouldn't feed dogs cheese (if that's what you said) it's hard on their digestive system.
