In this episode, I am joined by someone who I greatly admire. He’s not the flashiest leader.
He doesn't make headlines every day, but in my opinion, he is a modern-day hero, and one of the brightest leaders in the labor movement.
His name is Shawn Fain and he is the President of the United Auto Workers. The UAW, under Shawn’s leadership, recently secured a historic contract with huge pay and benefit increases for workers at the Big Three automakers-GM, Ford and Stellantis.
But the UAW did not stop there. Under Shawn’s leadership, they have launched a massive new initiative to organize non-union auto plants in the South.
And they have notched several more historic victories in recent months. In April, workers at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee voted to join the union, becoming the first large nonunion auto plant in the South to do so.
Weeks later, the union negotiated a new contract bringing significant pay and benefit improvements for its members at several North Carolina factories owned by Daimler Truck.
The campaign hasn’t been without its setbacks. Last month the UAW narrowly lost a unionization vote at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama following a concerted anti-union effort from corporate interests and the state’s governor. Both the US and German governments are currently investigating Mercedes for the intimidation and harassment they inflicted on their own workers during the campaign.
But just this week, UAW electric vehicle workers in Lordstown, Ohio reached a tentative agreement that will more than double their wages by the end of the contract.
So I am very excited to talk about the success of the UAW and the resurgent labor movement with my guest, UAW President Shawn Fain.

Really? After what he negotiated with GM that put my wife out of work on August 1st of 2024. With. A half year to go before her 30 years? She was not leaving. Until 2027. When promised 2 percent of GM could retire with a 50,000.00 bonus? And then RENEGOTIATED AFTER THEY SIGNED. NOW SHE IS DONE!!!! She was told to sign by her union and it would not get to her because of the 2 percent and seniority WELL GUESS WHAT???? THEY LET THEM ALL GO.

Mr. Biden, PLEASE get people like this guest to support YOU as an INDEPENDENT PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. And if you lose, get him to COMMIT to supporting an INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE from his State during the Midterms. And worse case scenario we construct a strong, functional, opposition party that fights Trump tooth and nail.... which the Democrats will NEVER do. But asking me to vote for Biden, with his genocide and possible senility, is a non starter. We need YOU.

What the usa needs is to spilt up the 2 biggest parties. Like pro trump republicans leave the party and start a new one. Anti biden democrats leaving the party and starting a new party. It sounds scary to not have a majority but its better for the country to have more than 2 parties. Or just cut the crap and become an oligargy already (like the usa is already).

I also think we should talk about the bigger result of higher wages. GDP measures economic output under ideal conditions and is also very theoretical, it is what an economy could make rather than what it does make. I think median wage is a better economic indicator, it dictates what people can buy and it also indicates economic resilience. In WW2 median wage was used to determine how much pressure an economy could take and from the disaster of Covid it's clear just how fragile the US economy is. A higher median wage not only gives a higher living standard but also is a buffer to economic shock.

@@hughquigley5337 It also makes sense if you give it some thought. If people have more money saved up they can afford to lose some of it. Also if they have a high living standard they can and usually are also willing to temporarily lower it. In the late 1930's Germany had the highest median wage in the world with the US close behind and overtaking it during the war. This high median wage showed during the war as German industry kept functioning despite the bombing. It might be hard to believe but Germany actually exited the war with more industrial capacity than it started with. Though the industries of the US, UK and USSR had expanded far more so they were much further behind than at the start of the war.

During WW2 they actually saw median wage as an important economic indicator of resilience. The higher the median wage was the more resilient an economy was. Germany had among the highest median wages anywhere in the world and so despite massive bombings it continued to function for a long time.

What happened? The United States took a right wing political turn in the 1970s that moved the nation away from social democracy and progress. In that time, automation was one tool used by employers against workers to deal with economic issues. The consequence is that we are living through another gilded age period of history that has delivered Post-Fordist capitalism.
