I find that vibrato is a huge differentiator. When people knock a guy for "mindless shredding", I often see that the player often has a terrible vibrato and their playing sounds hectic and chaotic because of that.

I'm going back to playing Blues and slow rock. Every time.I hear one of these guys that can do metal so Clean and smooth on KZfaq.I just makes me all the more aware of how much I lack in that area. i'm too damn old & been working at this for far too long, without any worthwhile results, to continue beating a dead horse.

Man, this past like...5 years or so, ive completely lost my passion for music. I am self-taught so i dont actually know all that much realistically, i dont find any new music that makes me want to pick up the guitar and try to learn it anymore, im always working and would rather spend my precious few hours of free time playing video games with my wife than practice guitar, or language, or anything i used to do. Life is just too draining and at 28, im no better than when i left highschool a decade ago..

I was you, except i quite often find music that i would want to learn to play. My issue is i severed the tendon to my pinky on my left hand, so my playing was so bad i quit. That was about 8 years ago. My solution belive it or not has been music theory. Playing fast is great, sure, but if im realistic with myself, i can no longer do that. How do i make up for it? I need to know my instrument. Inside and out. I cant play fast and technical, but i can play with soul and feeling. Maybe all you really need is a style change.

I was self taught for the first few years. When i started getting lessons i learned that a metronome is crucial for good technique atleast for me anyway. A metronome like forces me to learn good technique. I practiced sweep picking for like 6 months and hit a wall. Used a metronome and bam what a difference.

I remember when I first started being self taught and if I had to choose my favorite, I started doing it by accident when obsessively learning Elliott Smith songs. Later when I got more serious about my playing, I’ve always loved the neoclassical style and the phrase used was “secondary dominant”. When playing in a chord progression it’s using a major chord in a minor 3rd. A 5 v of 5.
