Don’t buy a black suit unless you are a waiter or a limo driver. Buy a charcoal grey suit. You can wear it in 90% of the same situations and the other 10% is because you should be wearing a tuxedo.

If you're going to wear suits almost every day, dry clean, and maintain them long term you need a lot of suits. Otherwise you're wearing the clothes out quickly and you're also going to wear the same suit once a week or more. And that's just so samey. So he's giving this for people who want their wardrobe to be predominantly suits wearing suits all the time. I guess? 2 or 3 suits for ppl who wear suits once every couple months is more than enough. Black, blue, grey will cover any occassion and give enough variety to avoid wearing the same suit to like, 2 weddings or a wedding and a funeral 2 weeks apart for example.

As someone who sells suits I always recommend medium to dark grey for your first suit, literally every color matches, with black your doing black shoes and belt, with blue your doing brown shoe with matching belt, with grey you can do either

He has a point, this is primarily for businessmen starting out. A suit, colours, presentation, all really matter in these situations. The reason for getting the colours in that order is that they compliment eachother backwards so you can interchange jackets, shirts, pants, etc. In my personal experience its only older boomers etc that really care about this anymore. Still good to be clean and presentable.

I only own a black with a even darker square pattern on it, looks great. I wear it with a grey silk shirt, no tie. Black watch (Either my Withings classic/smartwatch or when I feel really, really fancy I will wear my Frank Muller Loes van Delft watch) with a black vulcanic rock bead bracelet. Last but not least, black medium high Van Lier relatively pointy, relatively slick shoes.

Guy in the video honestly probably charges several thousand for each suit. It's simple, you only need 3: 1) have a black suit for formal gatherings in which you respect the people there. 2) For every other occasion you wear something that is not clearly a suit and going to be very different from everyone else (i recommend colorful wizard robes if you're tall and lanky) to make a statement that you are not an average peasant 3) A hoodie, jeans, and flip flops and just tell people you dress like a tech billionaire

I'd go black, blue, dark grey, blue pinstripes and then probably beige or light blue. Rn I got 3 dark blue suits in rotation for work. Could wear all of them to a wedding too though. For my sisters wedding I got a mintgreen one, which was an eyecatcher. Lots of people had asked me, where I got it from. Suits do a lot to your confidence. You start acting differently, chest more out, straught back - it just feels nice to look great yk

Like the recommendation to buy black shoes first, I find that purchasing a black suit first is a mistake. Sure, if you are only ever going to buy one suit, make it black, but if you plan on ever owning more than one, start with the blue one. You will wear it 100x for every 1 wear of the black one.

Navy blue and Charcoal Gray. Can't go wrong starting with these. If you only have one suit these colors are on point. After that, medium gray, light gray. Then perhaps a lighter blue, pattern variations and summer suits with beige etc. I have a black suit and only use it for formal events or funerals

Please don't wear blue to Funerals. That being said, buy black first, yes, but follow up with a non-black dark color, navy blue works well, as soon as possible. After that, you should get whatever you like for your leisure time. There's nothing more you really need. Grab a nice brown-earthy tweed three piecer if you're into peaky blinders, Grab a white and black checkered double-breasted suit If that floats your boat. you have one for business and one special occasions without dresscode already. If you go to formal Events, look into getting a black tie ensemble made. If you're working in blue collar or in uniform, your one businessy suit will suffice, you'll sometimes need one for rare occasions but not often. If you do wear suits for work, by all means, stick to Businessy colors for your first few suits. But foremost don't give a damn about some self declared suit gods spewing out a list of suits everyone needs. Black and something non black, that's it.

The Steve Harvey method: Get a black, navy, grey, brown and tan suit. Get 2 white shirts, 2 cream shirts, and 2 powder blue shirts. You get 75 suit combinations cause all the pants go with all the jackets and all the jackets go with all the shirts.

It’s weird how many people are saying he’s telling you you must own that many suits. All he is saying is that if you don’t own a suit, but want to own a suit, to start with black since it can be worn to anything. If you want to purchase more and build a collection because you anticipate wearing many suits, he gives guidelines for what he sees as being a good route to building a collection. The man has been selling some of the top suits in the world to world renowned clientele for longer than many of us have been alive, so he doesn’t give a shit about whether or not you buy one or ten. He’s made it.

I came to comment something similar - now I love a man in a suit, but you have to be realistic with the events you are attending. My man doesn't even wear a suit once a year, so we went with grey, because we'll it's nice, it doesn't stand out as much as a blue, and it doesn't compete with any groom who might be wearing black. Also, beige.... eh gentlemen, I would say dependent on your skin tone and weather.

Opposite of versatile. Sure you can wear the suit in a lot of occasions but the only dress shirt you can pull off is essentially just white or slightly off white. Anything else looks off with a black suit as opposed to dark grey.

Also, basically no one does black tie events any more - besides at the absolute top echelons of society. For the overwhelming majority of people -be even if people who wear suits at all - grey is far better.

Big difference between black and charcoal gray. In job interviews at least. Wouldn’t recommend going into a corporate interview with a black suit. It can be very dark gray, even charcoal, but pure black will be noticed negatively

The way it goes according to my grandfather is 1 suit for most formal events, then if your profession requires it, a wardrobe of business suits, then something that can be worn semi-formal. A black suit isn't that necessary unless you go to court often or plan on dying soon. And tuxedos can be rented.

Blue, black, and grey suit, same colors for pants, same colors for shirts unless you prefer a white one over one of those other colors. Those 9 items will provide you an almost infinite amount of combinations between them. Match tie accordingly

I would never advise a bespoke black suit. They seem only appropriate at funerals and weddings. Blues, grays, checks, stripes etc are all good but most black suits are underwhelming, don't accessorize as well and generally look played out.

I'm a daily suit wearer, I'd say that Black is overrated outside of the Classic Menswear community and underrated within it - Black suits are common, therefore you see them worn badly all the time because most people wear their suit badly and most people are in black suits, I think if a Black Suit was made Bespoke with interesting but subtle details(perhaps have it double breasted, peak lapelled or having a roped shoulder just to give it some spark whilst staying appropriate for the most formal of situations) it could be worn in most situations - either formal or just evening.

A black suit is absolutely not the first suit you buy. It comes off either too formal or too funeral. Rather, go dark gray like a charcoal. Then another color that suits you (navy or a lighter gray). Then go black.

As someone who was in custom suiting. No. Black is too formal, it can photograph green, especially if you not spending a lot of money on a good fabric. You really want a midnight blue or a charcoal for your first suit. Yes you should wear black to funerals or weddings. I recommend charcoal because it’s more boring but way more professional. And get like an S110 or S120 fabrics. Don’t go into S130+ until you have a lot of suits to rotate out. Because the higher quality fabrics are so fine, you’ll wear them out quicker.

Especially in the US where in most parts of the country sartorial culture is pretty much dead.

Especially when Bush was known to have a much more involved tailor in DC. Besides that we should judge him based on his own advice.
