18" gaming laptops are given a new lease of life in 2023 and I compare two popular ones - the Alienware m18 and the Acer Predator Helios 18.
Both are equipped withy an i9 13900HX CPU, 175W RTX 4080 and 16GB RAM. Which is the better value?

You did an excellent job here; much appreciated. I’m due for an Alienware upgrade, but I’m safe to hold off until next year.

If I were you, I would look at purchasing a 2023 M18r1 with a RTX4080. With discounts, you're not going to miss much with the 2024 model other than Type C charging, which is really a non-issue with this size of laptop...and you can always purchase a slim form-factor 330watt Alienware power brick at a later date.

If possible please try the acer predator trition 17x w a 4090 and maybe compare it to something like you did here. Im wondering if the thin chassis can actually perform well

I bought the m18 all amd version and it has been frustrating tweaking it right. These laptops run so hot these days and the driver updates are an issue. I had to reinstall windows and event viewer says the ssd it came with has bad sectors on it. Crazy that these things aren't tested before shipping

Hey man, great videos! Maybe you are interested in constructive Feedback. I was searching for a Legion Slim 7 review from you on your channel. And it was a bit difficult to navigate your channel because in the thumbnails you cant tell immediately which laptop is being reviewed. Im sure you have your reasons, just my experience! Keep the great work going

Thanks for the feedback! I'll try and make it easier in the future. Just so you know, you can always click on the magnifying glass on anyone's channel and type a search word like Legion and it will show all their videos with that name in it.

The Helios 18 Mini LED RTX4080 is £2600 in BF sale. Would you recommend this over the Legion Pro 7i RTX4080? Nice comparison btw.

Thanks! I really do like the 18" display on the Helios, more so than the 16" on the Legion. Mainly because of the size. The Legion panel is still plenty bright. The performance of the Helios in turbo mode is very good, better than the Legion in its max power mode but the fans are much louder. The Legion is quite quiet really and has much better battery life, I got about 5 hours on it.

I hope 18 inchers are trickling down the midrange segment. But then again I'm also hoping for a thinner chasis with 18 inch hardware. Which is pretty much saying wishful thinking 😂

I want an 18' as my next laptop, potentially in the coming months, but I hate the premium $$ we have to pay for them.. Seems that only 16' laptops get all the good deals and better base prices for the same components.. Also the cooling for the 18' laptops has been underwhelming at best, maybe even embarrassing. Such large and heavy laptops should have premier cooling. Yes the Cpu makers (Intel in particular) are to blame for those power hungry and inefficient Cpu's (again, mainly Intel), but 90c + shouldn't be considered the norm or "acceptable", cause it's not.
@InnocentiusLacrimosa
@InnocentiusLacrimosa 7 ай бұрын
90C is fine for cpu temps. Why does it bother you? Even Apple silicon runs at over 100C. "However, the current version of the utility isn't fully compatible with Apple's new M3 family and couldn't provide a readout of temperatures for performance and efficiency cores. However, the app did report package temperatures that ranged from 99 to 104 degrees Celsius during the Cinebench R24 stress test."
@slickrounder6045
@slickrounder6045 7 ай бұрын
@@InnocentiusLacrimosa I said 90c + (frequently even higher than just 90c). No, it's not fine. What you have to keep in mind is that this is brand new already reaching those temps. Once thermal paste degrades, and fans get cluttered up (most Buyers maintenance is sporadic at best), the issue exacerbates and gets worse even within a year, forget about 2+ years down the line. Maybe it would be vaguely acceptable if those temps were only reached in extremely demanding benchmarks over the course of 10+ mins, but when any run of the mill modern game is seeing 90c +, it's problematic. It also means the rest of the Laptop gets scorching hot, and that can cause problems for other components (like the AC Charger port, which I've had a bad experience with it getting hot. Mind you this was on a high tier Msi gaming laptop with great temps due to reseller applied Thermal Grizzly Condoctonaut and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads, and heavily undervolted for great temps, and even then it can cause issues over time). The higher cpu temp also negatively impacts the Gpu temps, which will directly impact performance once it reaches higher temps and can't reach higher boost clocks. I can go on and on listing issues with terrible temps, but if you are happy with them, and want companies to keep up that trajectory, then continue running cover for them and enjoy.
@InnocentiusLacrimosa
@InnocentiusLacrimosa 7 ай бұрын
@@slickrounder6045 do you also go to Apple videos to complain about those "terrible temps" at over 100C? Modern CPUs have boost algorithms that push frequencies until temp and voltage thresholds are reached unless you specifically limit them. Anyhow I do agree with you, that often this boosting is done way past the optimal spots in the efficiency curve - at least I got the impression that you hold this opinion. I would not want to misrepresent you here.

I may be old school but I like to keep my CPUs below 90. I'm sure gaming for a few hours at 95 will be OK, but when I was mining on my Alienware desktop using the CPU - it got fried within a few months. I also like to be able to do repastes myself and having the inverted motherboard just makes it one step harder and seems to have no advantage to me.
@slickrounder6045
@slickrounder6045 7 ай бұрын
@@InnocentiusLacrimosa I don't even pay attention to Apple, and don't buy Apple stuff. Even if I for some reason wanted to, their high temps would be a dealbreaker (perhaps their M3 chip or wtvr is better, I have no idea). With better cooling solutions, one can have much lower temps at the same wattage as the laptops in the video are pulling. When a Cpu is only at 50-60w (common in gaming), instead of being like ~90c it should be like 70-75c, and that's without even needing fans at maximum. So both these laptops are double digit temps worse than they should be. Repasting it with high tier Liquid Metal would largely solve the problem (easier said than done as OWN pointed out with the Alienware its an inverted motherboard..), but the cooling solution itself is also not up to par considering the weight (particularly the ~9lb M18) and size of the chassis (even some 17' Msi laptops do a better job with less real estate).

Helios does have LM on the CPU. Alienware uses its element 31 which is a combo of liquid metal and paste I believe. To repaste the Alienware you need to take out the motherboard. The Helios is more straightforward to repaste.

whats dell about making their laptop mobos inverted? like its just built upside down? How do they cool it? Are there bores through it to get the air out? hahaha
@OWNORDISOWN

Lol. It's totally daft as a cooling pad has zero effect as it just blows air onto the back of the motherboard..

@typerightseesight 6 ай бұрын
I am still confused at to why they would do it. Does that mean all the soldiering is on the opposite side of the components to make it more sensitive on your lap or something. I doubt it makes it any cooler.. I am confused I was a big fan of dell and they are kinda like just making a gimmick with this alienware stuff. Might just want a xps dell business class laptop for creators or whatever with a gpu in it. I dont see a reason to get all cray. lol@@OWNORDISOWN
