The best single speed bikes should be simple, but that does not mean they lack practicality or versatility. You just have to be sure you select the right bike for you. In this video, Ed Westrop presents the results of months of testing five of the best single speed road bikes available in 2024. The Elops City Bike is the best single speed bike for those on a budget, the Quella Oxford is best for those who want to go fast, the Steed Thoroughbred is our all round winner, while the Temple Lightweight is best for those who want a more luxury option. However, it's the Genesis Flyer which stands as the best single speed gravel bike, and also means it's the most versatile bike on test. Which would you pick?

The ELOPS has a MASSIVE tire clearance. So much so that I turned the frame into a TRACKLOCROSS with 700/40 Gravel tires and a wider carbon flat bar (78cm) and a much better crankset. Buy the bike, keep the frame & wheels, change everything else

Hi-tensile steel is a basic material, not high quality and not particularly strong either. Cro-moly (eg Reynolds 520, also featured) is stronger so can be made thinner. C’mon Cycling Weekly, you’re not new to this game!

Two years ago I bought a single speed gravel bike for year round riding. It took a lot of looking but I found the Octane One Kode, and I love it. It has a steel frame and is rather on the nippy side. Although I rode mostly on paved roads and paths, it’s very much at home on gravel. It set me back about €700 on sale. I did fit fenders after two rides to work in the rain. And there’s an option to retrofit derailleurs, which I won’t under the philosophy everything I need, nothing I don’t.

Handy hack for bikes that lack eyelets for fender or rack, or for adjusting the fit of either: I discovered this by accident. My current fave is a '79 mint Panasonic. 27" wheels. My front rack is designed for 700c, so the mount was bad and the bike only had rear eyelets on the front fork. I found a thin cone wrench, with two holes pre-drilled to hang it on a peg. I hacksawed it in half, then joined it to the rack using the pre-drilled hole, and the wrench -end then easily fit over the axle itself. Bingo, my rack is now joined at the fork blades with two clamps ( which is the intention with this rack) and it's sitting securely on the axle, held on with the quick release. It seems a super solid ride from testing so far. It looks cool too.

@Amelia-we7sy repent, believe on Jesus that he died on the cross for your sins, and that wasn’t replaced by another man on the cross it was no way that the Romans will let that happen. First of all the prophecy had to be fulfilled from Isaiah 53 in the old testament even and the other prophecy in the Old Testament had to be Popiel. This is how you know that the Bible is true by prophecy, and you will say to me well the Bible was missed with, but you’re going to Stan. The devil comes as the light, and he is the great deceiver and the Koran it says God is the best deceiver go to see that y’all God Allah is the devil Satan always copy cats what God does and you need understand we are created in gods image, and the devil hates all human beings, because we are in the image of God do you believe God can do anything well, he done it his way and buy fate and believing, and all things that he has done for us on this earth.

In the United States, the reasonable single speed is the one from State Bicycle. Single speed is the one that I used for my “last mile” transit plan and it worked very well. They are dead simple and they make it easy to use. You have nothing to go wrong when you’re just trying to run errands. Most towns are pretty flat and you won’t miss the gearing like you think you will. As long as they aren’t geared for track cycling you’ll do great.

Fascinating! I love the simplicity and elegance of these. I would have loved to hear more discussion about the rim brakes - performance, wet and dry, stopping distance and such.
@bikemike1118
@bikemike1118 5 ай бұрын
I think there’s enough information and personal experience out there regarding rim brakes (= they are good & simple). But I personally don’t get the concept of single speed! Sure it is simple (but bad) … I mean what’s the point in having only one gear?? This comes from the very early age of bicycles, doesn’t it? Even the lesser weight cannot outperform the disadvantages …It must be a one-trick-pony for flat environments. But therefore £ 2.500 is overly high priced.
@MarchuxProductions
@MarchuxProductions 3 ай бұрын
@@bikemike1118 You don't need more to a: have fun and b: get places. Plus you get the benefit of lower cost, simpler maintenance, and teaching yourself more cadences than your preferred one. Sure, gears are better on paper (and for actual racing), but for people like me, no geared bike can even close to the enjoyment I get out of my street ridden track bikes. And you can climb on a singlespeed and fixed gear- just git gud
@MarchuxProductions
@MarchuxProductions 3 ай бұрын
Rim brakes are good enough, especially if you get V-brakes.
@bikemike1118
@bikemike1118 3 ай бұрын
@@MarchuxProductions I do agree with your statement regarding rim brakes or V-brakes. But not with the single speed/ no gear bike. Okay if you live in a FLAT area … otherwise it’s like a car (normal - not electrified!) with only one gear: ridiculous. Never had ANY maintenance issues with my gear shift of my XC-Mountainbike in 31 (!) years … so what’s the point? And they charge $ 2.500.- nonetheless…for a bike with no additional gears?! So where is the cost savings?? Come on, man! This concept comes probably from those Californian beach cruisers (flat as a piece of paper environment) and totally relaxed cruising around mentality…okay with that. But that is not biking or cycling in general. If it was…no pro-bike had gears!
@MarchuxProductions
@MarchuxProductions 3 ай бұрын
@@bikemike1118 Again, you can climb on a singlespeed. Sure, not HUGE climbs, but definitely most of what cities usually throw your way. Just get good. As for the maintenance, I basically don't have any. Keep the chain lubed and tires pumped up, that's all it needs for YEARS. I don't have a problem with doing maintenance, I even build my own bikes, I just prefer to not do maintenance. It's great! You're probably looking at some boutique frame builders- a road bike from those would cost 4-5k instead of the 2.5k for a singlespeed or track frame. You could go out and buy a Wabi or a Dolan for sub-1k and get a bike that's more capable than you'll ever be. Hell, I built one of my fixed gears for 700EUR-ish, and even that is more than enough. That idea came from early TdF, as well as street-ridden track bikes. Both super competitive, my track bikes even have geometry that's more aggressive than a road race frame. Cali beach cruisers had nothing to do with it. There are plenty of pro bikes with no gears- google what a velodrome is. And finally, are you a pro cyclist? Do you always go for max effort? Judging by your answer, you're far from it. And that means you don't actually need gears. Hell, do you need to ride an XC MTB instead of a hybrid, even?

I have a Quella Cambridge. I use it for my daily commute. I like it. But the bike is harsh and the wheels aren't that great. The only reason I keep them is they look good. So to mitigate the harshness, I changed the tyres for some Hutchison fusion 5 and the innertubes to some lightweight butyl ones. With the right pressure, the bike is confortable while still fast. And I changed the brake callipers for some campagnolo ones for better breaking performance.

Up until now, I have been using it as a fixed-gear bike with straps and a straight bar. However, I am now considering adding gears to it. Could you please suggest what cassette, gears, and other components I should consider? I am looking for something that will enhance the bike's performance and allow for longer and faster rides outside of the city. I am particularly interested in products from a local company, and I plan to visit their store on Monday to make a purchase and get everything set up by Wednesday. If anyone could link me to brands and models for the right type of cassette and gears for the Genesis Flyer and provide recommendations on what I should choose, I would greatly appreciate it. You can't reasonably do that no. If you really want to retain the bullhorns, your best option would be to change to a pair of bar end brake levers like the Dia-Compe DC188. But at that point you might as well change to flat or drop bars, _or_ look for a bike that comes with either of those in the first place.

I had a little trouble getting this delivered kzfaq.infoUgkxn_jUDSlprMIeubd9rHdEAnv59nKfjcKv and eventually had to pick it up from local UPS location, but customer service was really nice and helped me get it before the estimated delivery date. They even gave me a partial refund for my trouble. Thanks Paige! The actual bicycle is just as advertised, and had no damage or scratches. This is an excellent commuter bike for most people. I did a few modifications to make it even better for me personally. I added fenders from my old bicycle. They weren't for disc brakes, but after adding longer bolts and about an inch of spacers the supports no longer interfered with the brakes. I like to pedal HARD and go FAST, so I switched the chain rings to Vuelta Corsa Pro Crankset, Black, 175mm 53/39T Square Taper. This has longer crank arms too, so its kind of 2 upgrades in 1. The front derailleur had to be readjusted so it would stay on only the 2 chain rings until I get a different shifter. I also switched the cassette to one with 11T high gear and a larger low gear. With larger gears on the front and back I also had to get a longer chain. I probably couldn't race this bike unless i got a different cassette with gears closer in size relative to each other, but I can still go plenty fast on flats and downhill while still being able to climb steep hills. For going to and from work and the grocery store this is a great bike. It even looks good. I also added a rear rack and panniers for grocery trips. Now it has great storage capacity especially paired with a backpack. Very happy with my purchase.

What no mountain bikes? I don't seem to be able to find a replacement for my current Genesis Fortitude and the only option seems to be go custom build. Any suggestions?

6:20 and with your drops, unless you've put hoods on with new levers, you have the exact same issue, arguably worse.

Way ahead of you, I fitted some TRP hoods with beautiful chrome levers, also with some more cushioned bar tape, has made all the difference!

Do Quella use real Vegans to produce their leather? Sounds like a reasonable use for them.

Content and title don't match since it's 2023 and these are by no means the best singlespeeds, but rather a selection of affordable singlespeeds. However I still like the video. For people looking to get a singlespeed/fixed gear/track cycle these companies are some of my favorite brands: Aurora Collective, Affinity, Mash SF, Standert, 8Bar, Rodagira, Kory York, Surly, Wabi,...

The best single speed was the Ribble urban with a superior Reynolds 725 frame, but they don't sell them anymore. For deep pockets you have Condor, but only in size small. The bikes in your vid are crap in comparison, except for the fragile alu Genesis. These are grim days for single speeds...

Also no Schindelhauer ? They are the most gorgeous singlespeed bikes with their aluminum frames and carbon belt drive. Expensive sure, but it’s worth it. They put to shame your « TEMPLE » which is way overpriced for what it really is.

It does make some sense? If you like the simplicity. If you just want to run on mostly flattish journeys. If you want very sturdy bike (no dish wheels) no derailleur to snap or F up . If you just want to be a bit different. If you have little intrest in times and races. Sure single speed is not for everyone, but it is for some . I have had 3 in my life . First one was my mothers hand me down with rod breaks single and quite heavy,and very old 1941sh i was just a kid in early 70s and it was way to big for me i had a 3 speed yet this old rod break heavy steel bike was just quicker somehow i was sold . Then a cheap bike was conjured up in late 80s it was great compared to my 2x5 racer at the time . My 3rd was a single/ fix design built ' Pearson Hanzo ' it was great only it got neglected. Looking to get another one , that Genesis flyer looks great . So maybe it's a weakness or a madness thing but some of us just tend towards single/ fix gear . For us we know it somehow makes sense, flying past someone on a multi gear bike on your single gives a warm glow , and make no mistake i am no athlete.
