Best 308 Ammo (PART 3) - 100 Yard Shooting TESTED. Are you looking for the best 308 ammo? Interested in seeing the different 308 rounds perform in 100 yard shooting? We’re here for you.
We previously posted the Best 308 Round Part 1 and Part 2 a few months ago (LINKS BELOW) and had such a great response, we wanted to do another 100 yard grouping test with some more 308 rounds. So what is the best 308 ammo off the shelf?
We took 5 new rounds of 308 ammo to see how they did with 100 yard shooting. You can fast forward to the time stamps below if you're interested in seeing a particular 308 round.
Start: 00:00
Hornady Precision Hunter: 1:06
Barnes VOR-TX: 2:10
Hornady Outfitter: 3:05
Federal Meet Eater Trophy Copper: 4:17
Hornady Superperformance SST: 5:20
Hornady Superperformance SST Try 2: 6:15
Summary: 6:50
The best 308 ammo definitely depends on what your gun likes and shoots best and what your shooting purpose is. The best 308 round for target shooting is different than the best 308 ammo for hunting, and the best 308 round for hunting also depends on how the bullet reacts when it hits the target, but hopefully this will help some.

Thanks for the videos x3. I have several 308 rifles as its my favorite rifle round. I had also noticed my bolt action grouping be very different than my DD5 depending on bullet grain. For some reason I always thought my variations where due to varying conditions, locations (move around alot from state to state), and just my variance from day to day.. instead of realizing that it may really just be gun performance preference in bullet type/grain/loads. I just ordered some 110gr ammo as well as 125. I'm very curious how much the ballistics will change with such light bullets out of a 308 platform. I hope to see video #4 soon.

I use cheap Tula 150 steel. But found lighter varmint rounds 125 grain are way tac drivers. Havent tried 110 yet. But my short pinned barrel doesn't like heavy bullets. Bigger fireball, more noise, and more kick. But for hunting the heavier slower bullet works better to conserve meat at closer ranges. Different weights for different distances.

I built a high end AR10 with a match grade barrel. Hornady superformance shot an 8 inch group at 100 yards. Federal gold metal match shoots 1 moa or less. Barrel harmonics are important when it comes to accuracy. Every gun should be tested for accuracy with different loads ... if you're chasing accuracy.

One issue you get with heavy, high-bc factory loads in older cartridges is a long jump to the lands. Hornady has to load that round to 2.80 and that long sleek ojive means that bullet is way off where it wants to be. New cartridges have less freebore by design and are were designed with those long sleek bullets in mind. Almost any gun can shoot well, but older cartridges with newer style bullets really benefit from handloading with long seating to tighten up groups. A 130gr TTSX in my 308 savage axis II shoots groups in the 0.5-0.8 range with the bullets all the way out to 2.845-2.85. That cascade is a much better built rifle system and should be capable of groups in the 0.4-0.6 range with a tuned handload. That being said, if you’re hunting at normal ranges, just take those outfitters and you’re good to go. No need to squeeze out every shred of accuracy to shoot a deer at 200 yards.

@@ReviewThisThing Copper is great, especially for quick kills for big game. But you have to be careful - slower velocities result in poor expansion, which happens frequently with heavier bullets, milder loads, at longer distances. A lot of the 165+ grain bullets don’t have great terminal performance past the 400 years, with bullet expansion being minimal. Even though they usually result in a DRT animal at much shorter distances. If you’re hunting in open plains, where the likelihood for long distance shots is high - a lighter bullet will result in a much better terminal performance.

It still boils down to each individual rifle. We can have the exact same rifle built one right after the other, and they will shoot the exact same ammo with different groups and point of aim. Please test a barrel deresonator and see if you can make one of the worst for your gun shoot as good or better than the best. THAT would be a good test of an item. Being able to tune your rifles for the type of ammo and bullet style and weight best suited for the type of hunting (elk vs pronghorn for example) Or for the shooter (reduced recoil perhaps) would be more efficient than buying a dozen boxes/brands and finding a few that work and eight partial boxes sitting on a shelf.
@ReviewThisThing
@ReviewThisThing 2 жыл бұрын
You’re exactly right! For me that’s part of the “fun.” Learning that everything is so relative and specific has taught me a lot. That’s an excellent point as well about trying to “tune” a barrel to a round it doesn’t necessarily like as well. Those heavier rounds may be much better for elk, so working with it so it shoots them well could be a great project! Thank you for your input, and thank you for watching!

What's your barrel twist rate and length? I would think that matters more than the ammo. My 18" ar10 in .308 shoots sub moa at 100 yards with anything over 160 grains. The 150s fly all over the place lol

I would not be surprised if with proper cool down between shots if those groups didn't shrink anywhere from a quarter to a half inch, especially with that thin barrel. That wouldn't be a factor in hunting though as you're typically only using 1 maybe 2 shots at most.

Those SSTs are definitely fast. I have one 308 that doesn’t shoot them too bad , but my Tikka 308 doesn’t shoot them very well. The tikka shoots 168/165 the best, the Mossberg shoots 150s better.

@@ReviewThisThing I just went back and watched the first video in this series. The Cascade definitely likes the 150gr loads better -- especially the Norma. Depending on the specific load, it looks like those would be good for elk out to 300, and for deer out to a reasonable range for most shooters. Sectional density is a little light, so penetration at longer ranges would be pretty sketchy.

Great series you got going here! I have a different rifle(Browning X-bolt Max Long Range), but then I've also had some pretty good groups with other ammo that might be worth a try in your Cascsde. The Norma Bondstrike 180-gr shot quite well in mine, might be the exception to the rule as far as heavier bullets go with your rifle? Also, Hornady loads a 165-gr Superformance SST that shoots very good for me. Federal has a round that sends a 168-gr Berger Hybrid Hunter, hasn't done that great for me but might work for you? And one that I have yet to try, the Sig Elite Hunter Tipped 165-gr, essentially a black oxided Sierra Tipped Gameking. They also load a Nosler 165-gr Accubond round that is slower than these(2700 vs 2840), haven't tried them yet either. There are LOTS of options out there, especially for a .308. Again, great series here, looking forward to the next one!

I know the decisive things is hold the gun without move and press trigger without move the gun and have a good vie of the target and sights, or have a good scope, of course well zeroed gun and quality gun made. But the biggest problem is when ammo velocity is not the same always. Like each bullet having different speed, the shots are all over the place like shotgun blast. Also each barrel twist rifling need the right bulletweight. This is what i know but even understanding it iam not the best shooter. Just about average
