Mark, you articulate your explanations so spot-on. You have been my number one backup in quelling arguments I have had with some shooters in my long range lessons I teach new students that have picked up and twisted something from an article they've read or video that they watched. Can't thank you enough for your years of testing and divulging your fact-finding to your viewers.

Great video. I think you did a great job explaining the subject without getting complicated. I have had a low key version of this subject with people in my area. And there can be alot to cover and explain. And still make valid points. Especially when they ask lots of questions. I sure do love talking about this stuff in general. I love seeing people get excited about their passion and hobbies. Keep up the great work and content mark and Sam. Love your videos. Be safe. Be happy. Have fun.

Of the dozen or so built rifles I own that range from 6mm/.243’s up to .338 Lapua Magnums, I always circle back to the .300 Winchester Magnum. I have a few, but my shooter is a Remington Model 700 with a simple blueprinted action, with a Remage style 27” 1:9 twist Sendero contour Crown Ridge Barrel Works tube, in a Magpul chassis. Quality loading components are just easier to come across, good brass doesn’t cost a fortune, and high BC bullets (I shoot 225 grain Hornady ELD’s with a G1 of .777). Anyway, as for magnums, I truly believe it’s the sweet spot, even favoring it over the beloved 7mm Remington Magnum. I still love the different challenges that each cartridge comes with to make them perform. Love the channel.

I loved my 300 Winchester Magnum. I wish I never sold it. But a buddy wanted to dip a toe into long range and I wanted a CZ Shadow 2. But my 338 Lapua Magnum is a hoot as well. I might have to get another 300 Winchester Magnum. Maybe a Bergara.

Thank you for another great video. I'm running a 30-06 in a MDT ESS chassis - one of the small 'fellas', but then again, I haven't been shooting that much ELR. Personally I would go for a 7 mm or a 6.5 CM over a .300 WM, due to running costs and, shall we say, ease of use. I guess it comes down to personal preferences.

It is incredible how often your videos mirror my interactions at work. Just the other day I was discussing with a customer the advantages of the 300 PRC for the "off the shelf" long range shooter. Good twist rates, good factory loads with heavy bullets, good barrel lengths, etc. I reference and recommend your channel several time a day as I find it one of the most useful and interesting channels on the site. Always great when I see a new upload when I wake up and I can drink my coffee from my 4AW mug and absorb some knowledge. Working on my own 300WM project right now and I'm fixing to pick up one of your 3 or 4 port muzzle breaks at some point in the near future. You guys are fantastic and much appreciated.

The longest range within reason is an hour and a half away from me, I go a couple times a year the longest distance is about 750 yards and I use Hornady eld x 200 grain it's factory ammo but I can hit 12 inch steel all day long at that distance but that's nothing compared to your incredible ELR shooting keep up the great work! Hi Mark. I’m so glad you are doing some work on the 300 WSM. I am waiting for mine to come through the onerous licensing process we have in South Africa. Your views correspond well to my own research on the calibre rifle. A good mid range all rounder which can be used for hunting and target shooting. I will be doing both in a factory 24” barrel with hand loading. 2000 yards sounds like a good benchmark to work towards. Looking forward to more videos on the 300WSM.

Thanks for all the hours of work and the common sense notions regarding distance applications. I am really torn about buying the easy button in the 300 or 7 prc chamberings but your success up to 220 grn with thr wsm makes me believe it's at least doable and maybe less in the expense department. Shot a lot of ELR here in Europe with people using 300 RUM (some countries had caliber restrictions) - I've seem them shoot awesomely out to 2500 yards. But I must say more and more people are up-gunning over the last few years, with the 300 and 338 Norma becoming popular and of course the 375/408 CheyTac and 416 Barrett. The latest fashion seems to be the 33XC and 37XC.

Thank you for another great chat and presentation. My mind was already pretty set on a 300PRC due to the good choices in factory rifles with heavy 26” barrels and faster rate of twist than on factory 300WM offerings. After watching your discussion from today, my decision is firm. Choosing a factory rifle leaves more money in the budget for the optic.

The twist rate on the 300 PRC is advantageous if you’re shooting 245 grain plus projectiles, if not, it’s a non issue. Personally, I love the efficiency you get with the 300 WSM. You will be using 3 to 4 grains less powder to achieve the same velocities. At present, more of availability of brass, and ammo. I also love you can get a Winchester M70 All Weather in stainless, which is not cheap, but the best quality rifle you can get for the money. IMO. That said, the 300 PRC is a great choice, but much less variety of components and less efficient with its powder consumption.

@@falba1492 I need to shop what is available in South Africa. Buying another rifle and then replacing a barrel is not practical in this market. Firstly, if I was to buy the rifle today, I'll be lucky if the South African Police Service has accepted my application and motivation and then issued my firearm license in a year. Let us thus assume that I am lucky and in July 2022, I get my rifle, the process of replacing a barrel is likely just as long. Therefore, once the license on the new barrel is issued, I can take it to a gunsmith for the necessary replacement. In a perfect world, I will have a heavy contour barrel on the alternative rifle in the second half of 2023 - if I am lucky. Then getting back to what is available in our market. Yes, you can buy a 300WSM over here, in very limited offerings and on average at least double the cost of a .300PRC which already has a heavy profile barrel. And will work in the ELR application that I want to compete in South Africa. If I was not in this market, I would have considered something substantially larger than one of the indicated chamberings.
@falba1492
@falba1492 2 жыл бұрын
@@heinrichstoltz1356 - Now I understand you’re predicament. I was considering a 300 PRC build two years ago, with Bergara’s custom shop here in the US. But then I purchased a new old stock Steyr in 300 H&H, and didn’t really feel the need for the 300 PRC. I would not be shooting ELR, and if I was going to use 250 grain projectiles, I’d do that in my 338 Win Mag.

7mm norma mag would be my ultimate ELR rifle with a 30" barrel. I think it would be able to have decent barrel life while sending 195s down range at 3200 fps which wouldn't even go transonic on tell about 2300-2400 yards. Cheers from Canada. I’m no ELR shooter but do enjoy seeing how far I can plink at things and more importantly am a hunter - for me I don’t think I’d ever pull the trigger on a living breathing animal beyond 600 yards for ethical reasons regardless of ability, maybe I’ll feel differently in the future but the way I see it time of flight starts to matter and animals can move unpredictably increasing the odds of a cruel, not swiftly fatal, wound. But for just pure long range shooting for the fun of it I love your channel. As a hunter, shooter, handloader, and all around rifle looney, 30 caliber magnums remain my favourite all purpose cartridges. They really do hit a sweet spot of being manageable to shoot proficiently from a rifle that isn’t necessarily too heavy to lug around all day, have trajectories that are hard to match with the bigger bores, and hit with an authority and penetration ability on large game that the 7mms and smaller calibers simply do not.

For my hunting and long range capable rifle I went with .300 win mag for all the reasons you cited. It just works. Handloads with a 225 eld m at 2800 or so are about the max capability possible with its 10 twist, a savage 111 long range hunter model. Another rifle that I’ve got my eye on is the browning max long range model, it’s a .300 RUM that comes with an 8 twist right from the factory! That’s gonna be very hard to beat. And don’t count out the old .300 weatherby - Peterson makes brass for it now.

I have watched and enjoyed your ELR shoots with the 300wm and 7mm rem mag. My 300wm (hunting, not an ELR rig) will be finished in August - can't wait. You have given me confidence that I made the right choice for LR hunting and some sport shooting - AZ, USA. I seriously doubt I could come close to hitting targets as far away as you are able to hit. BUT.... why not try?

Mark, I recently watched a related video of yours reviewing/testing Warner Tool Flatline bullets. I have a set of these bullets for my .308 but I also have a set of Alco Bullets. I have found a fair number of Flat Line bullet tests and reviews here on KZfaq, I have trouble finding good Alco Bullet tests. They are also a precise machined bullet with very high BCs (I just received a box of 175gr 308 bullets from them with a listed BC1 of .707). The Alco's LOOK good but I have concerns about them, especially from the perspective of loading from a magazine. They have needle sharp extended tips (made of non-hardened steel so they are NOT AP) that can actually puncture your fingers if you aren't careful with them. Where Warner Tools indicates they determine their BC via doppler radar over the full flight path of the bullets, Alco doesn't specify how they measured theirs. I'd love to see you check them out and see 1) are the BCs accurate?; and 2) can they be safely fed via magazine? On #2 I wonder because I am not yet sure you could even load them to magazine length with their LONG needle nose, and I also wonder if that sharp tip would be damaged by the feed ramp as you chamber it from a magazine, which could totally screw up the ballistics or, certainly, their accuracy.

One in 223, one in 6.5 Grendel, one in 308, and the last is 300 Win Mag. All able to stay on the 3 inch gong at 600 which is a wonderfully fun game to play.

Original 7.62mm smokeless powder calibers were selected primarily to facilitate MG requirements, with logistical compatibility to battle rifles. ELR is an entirely different field of application, there are no terminal ballistics requirements, a hit is a score. To me shooting a cartridge with more energy then 54R/30-06 is a pain.

Your .300 WSM load looks to be considerably longer than the .308 Win. Are you running the WSM in a true short action, or are you running it in a standard length action with some freebore so you can seat the longer bullets out further and not take up so much case capacity?

Takes a .30cal cannon to run really high BC bullets. 6.5mm bullets give higher BC so much "easier". I'm running a 308Win to 1120m but it's pushing it... 6.5CM, PRC or 7mm SAUM is the way to go, imo.

From all this I guess it boils down to, what ever 30 cal you have stick to it as there is little gain in changing to another. For me 300WinMag is powerful enough to do the same job and all the components are easily and economically available. More so than many of the others. Can’t imagine where a 30-378 has significant ability over a 300WinMag in outcome except in the cost of running and firearm availability’s

As someone who is just getting into long (longer, definitly not ELR yet) range shooting how do you feel about belted vs non-belted magnums. There seems to be a lot of opinions saying to stay away from belted magnums based on alot of theoretically downsides and yet no one seems to have actually experienced them.
