It can be difficult to choose an all-mountain ski. For one thing, there are so many options! (Maybe too many). And on top of that, people define all-mountain skis differently.
To sort things out, we chose a few top picks based on staff feedback from our ski test. Some of these skis are playful, some demanding, and some a little bit of everything.
Here at Powder7, we think of all-mountain skis generally as skis that measure between 88mm and 102mm underfoot and are well-suited for skiing most terrain and conditions on the mountain on most days of the year. Skiers who prefer carving or skiing on-piste often choose narrower skis in this category, while people who hunt for powder or like exploring tend toward wider skis around 100mm.
You can find all these skis, plus many many more, online at powder7.com or in our shop in Golden, Colorado!

I bought a set of Rustler 10's this year and could not ski them. I believe that it was due to the unusual mounting point for the bindings which is two inches further forward than any other 180cm skis. if you ski sitting back, they would be great. For me, they dove into the deep powder like a submarine. I much prefer my Bonafides.

Your choices are more western that Eastern based. If you live in New England you would include the Brahma 88 , Enforcer 88, Kendo 88 to ski the frequent firmer machine groomed granular conditions. The Brahma 88 is my everyday driver and the Enforcer 94 is my ski for our version of a powder day. My advice to customers is to buy a ski for the conditions you will most often be skiing. On the Ice Coast it’s frequently fast and frozen. I just added a Deacon 84 to the line up.

For sure, Thomas! Since we're based in Colorado, we for sure lean towards the mid-90s range for all-mountain recommendations. We have a frontside (or firm snow oriented) video coming out soon, where we talk about the Kendo and Brahma! Both killer skis!

Thanks for watching!! I think it just depends how you look at it. Stockli categorizes the Nela 80 as an all-mountain piste ski with the Nela 88 and SR88. They include the Nela 96 in the freeride category alongside the SR 95 and 102. In person, I think the Nela 96 has a more similar rocker profile to the SR95 than the Nela 88 does. But that's just me. I've been on the Nela 88 + SR 88, and find them really comparable, with the Nela just being suited for lighter riders better.

You guys rock or slow jam depending on the mood.. Anyways, I already bought 2 pairs of skis from you without using them 2021 DPS Wailer F100 x 184 and 2021 Kastle 96 FX HP x 180 (slightly used) and I can't wait to use both.. A couple things.. First off.. I am your typical Stockli person.. I have a pair of 2016 Stormrider 88s which I brought into the shop a couple times.. I love those skis for hardpack and groomers.. Absolutely no speed limit.. They do like getting up to speed to perform.. It sure does look like the 95s are a lot different than the 88s but I still want to step up to the 102s.. It sounds like they no longer make 105s.. If I could get a deal on 102s or 105s I probably would.. Maybe even the 95s.. The last thing I want to mention and I think you know about it but I broke my arm on 3.14.2022 on QST 106 x 188. The overall size of the skis might have been too much for me to handle.. The thing about that day was it was a holiday and there was a ton of people.. There was also a couple inches of fresh powder that instantly turned into crud.. If I could have just been doing cruiser long radius floaty turns I probably would have been fine.. The skis were amazing in regards that they could go over anything without getting affected.. My guess is those 98s would probably do pretty much the same and I would imagine those Stance for women would too.. I have heard phenomenal things about the QSTs Stances and Blanks.. Do you have Blanks and do you have anything to say on them?
@powder7skis
@powder7skis Жыл бұрын
Bummer about the arm, Darin! Hope the recovery has gone smoothly. All those Stormriders are sick, just depends on how wide/freeride you want to go. They're good at speed and also surprisingly freeridey, especially the 102s. To your second question, we're big Blank fans here at the shop. I have a pair, actually. Not as bomber as a Stormrider 112 would be (which doesn't exist unfortunately) but still pretty strong and super versatile. -Matt

@@powder7skis Thanks Matt.. Hey I went skiing twice and got a chance to use my Kastle and my DPS.. I am very happy with both and thanks again.. Kastle was opening day at Keystone and they clocked in at 49.5 with a ton of people and they got a lot more and the DPS clocked in at 48.5 and that is pretty much the speed limit and I am totally cool with that.. They both do have a different feel from each other so I am not exactly sure which I will use when conditions get cruddy, slushy, powdery;)

Hi, I am trying to decide on a ski purchase this week...here are the contenders..Elan Wingman 86 CTI Fusion X, Volkl Deacon 84, Volkdo Kendo 88 and Elan Ripstick 88. I live in Pittsburgh but will have more skiing days in Colorado this year in January and March..total days out west 11..vs probably 5 at home. I am in mid 60's and have been skiing for 58 years...not as aggressive as in the past...mainly groomed slopes (east) and hopefully more powder west... real thoughts on what I should by...5'8 and 200lbs. Thanks
@powder7skis
@powder7skis Жыл бұрын
Wingman is the choice for groomer focus, but with those CO trips and a little powder chasing, I'd lean toward the Kendo or Ripstick. Kendo is sturdier/heavier/more stable; Ripstick is lighter and more playful and a little better for powder and off-piste skiing. I don't think you can go wrong either way, it just depends on what type of feel you're going for. -Matt

Curious... Salomon Stance 94 seems to fit my type of skiing best. Can they be used by a guy?
@powder7skis
@powder7skis Жыл бұрын
Great question! You totally can! The men's vs. women's thing comes down to an often slightly thinner/softer core in women's models to be easier to flex for someone who leans on the lighter side of things. BUT, for this ski, Salomon actually found the core in the Stance 94 to hit the best balance of performance and play, so next year ALL models of Stance will have the same core. So if you prefer the men's topsheet (or need a longer length), the men's Stance 96 next year will be identical to the women's Stance 94. QST 98 compared to M-Free 99? Thanks.
@powder7skis
@powder7skis Жыл бұрын
Super similar skis (and both very fun)! Because the QST 98 has ever-so-slightly less tail rocker and the double sidewalls, I think it might carve a touch better on trail compared to the M-Free 99. I've always felt the QST 98 feels really locked in for its shape. That said, I think the slightly stiffer flex on the M-Free helps push through firm crud off trail a little better. Overall, super subtle differences, but if you're skiing on trail more you could lean towards the QST.

Anything above 80mm is a joke of a ski for someone who is never going to be an expert. Even these narrators don’t know what they are talking about when they speak of rebound energy from the ski that doesn’t even exist on the hard pack surfaces these skis are not even made for, never mind powder. (Though will be skied on groomers over 90% of its life) The snap rebound of a ski does nothing to move the skier and is there to manage pressure to the tip and tail of the ski while pressured.
