It is indeed very interesting for not just replacing all filters, but also reducing or eliminating water changing (draining) and providing fish food at the same time. Fully and properly implementing it replicates natural ecosystem with little hassle to take care of :) It takes more than one long video (I am working on them) to explain all details, but it is all plain simple in the core - this fact is very funny to me.

I may do it only after expiration of the patent on this technology. Law is law whether you like it on not. PS: The algae scrubber needs constant water flow to make it work the best - that is something I reluctant to use in my nurseries. Don't get me wrong! The algae scrubber is the best in my opinion out of all commercially available aquarium filters. I use it only in one, my largest aquarium...the other couple dozens nurseries been taking care also in natural ways without use of additional light or any pumps starting from beginning of 2017 ;))

Here is the link: www.santa-monica.cc/ Look for algae scrubbers based on the amount of food you put in the aquarium. Do you change your water in the guppies water bottle tanks? Do you pump air into them? I really curious as I want to try it.

Thank you for your questions! I don't change (drain) water in my aquariums since beginning of 2017. Before that, I did change up to 20% of water on weekly or so basis. I pump air only in my largest (10.5 liter) aquarium for the algae scrubber depends on it. I used air pumps for different purposes in some of my aquariums before 2017. You may want to know details on why and how I did. Check out this playlist of my videos on aquarium fish care: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/atlihMWJ0pmYf6M.html All the best in your new adventure!

@clhatcher1
@clhatcher1 6 жыл бұрын
Mr. Spyrouklas as long as your house temperature is within 3 degrees or so of your fishes required temp you don't necessarily need a heater. But a heater always helps stop fluctuations.

Yes but they say that guppies need specific temperature so he has the same temperature to his house the whole year?
@4me
@4me 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! And I like how clhatcher1 answered it - to the point! To be clear about this matter: temperature in my apartment is between 72-76 F all year around. It is in comfortable range for guppies. Therefore, I don't use any additional aquarium heaters (or coolers ;) Guppies breed more in temperature close to 80 F (with adequate feeding, water condition and etc.). You mentioned a specific temperature is most likely close to 78-80 F is popular recommendation coming from most guppy breeders. And it is the most common temperature for guppies in aquariums. Yes, guppy originally were tropical fish that likes warm water. In middle of 20 century scientist put efforts to adapt tropical guppies to different climate zones (non tropical). Wild guppies don't stop adaption process forced on them by scientists. You can find wild guppies today live and breed on 5 continents in very different water in way below tropical temperature. I think it's fair to say that guppy may adapt to your comfortable temperature ;) PS: In NY landlords must provide 68 F during day time and above 55 F at night during heating season - most landlords keep temperature much higher.

I cultivate algae in all my aquariums. So, some amount of algae is always presented for them to feed on. Though, I do provide additional algae when I don't see much of wilting leaves or any leftover fish food left in aquariums since the previous feeding.

Suggestion.You may put a transparent cover when you put that thing back into the water... The transparent REMOVABLE cover may be made of glass, acrylic, or plastic... that fits into the mouth (or open part) of the algae filter. So when you pull it out, you have ALL the algae... and no more brushing the inside of the aquarium with a toothbrush. And you can put whatever amount of algae... back into the aquarium.

Hi Swiper, actually that might help, although growth will still occur somewhat between the shield and the glass. But actually, growth on the glass is there to feed the fish. If this is not needed, then our DROP.6 or .6x do not touch the glass and have no growth on the glass.
@swiperfox3145
@swiperfox3145 6 жыл бұрын
To Santa Monica Filtration My suggestion is to eliminate (or minimize) the scrubbing off of the algae from the aquarium walls... though it will not hinder the growth of algae that he could use to feed the fish. The collected algae will just be within the box and the suggested cover... for easier cleaning, removing, or harvesting outside the aquarium. If he is not careful removing the algae from the aquarium wall, all of those algae will circulate the aquarium water, which will make it look cloudy and dirty.

Use one of those cheap blue plastic razor blades and you will get most of the algae from the aquarium wall with no effort with just a tiny mod. Take a cutter and cut off the guard - the plastic barrier thats in front of the blades making contact with the glass possible. Then shave the wall.

Yes one of the techniques is to hold the bottom of the unit against the wall as you raise it up, and it scrapes the algae into the case.

Why did you rinse off the white rocks with tap water? Shouldn't been better to use aquarium water instead? You've killed off all of the beneficiary bacterias from the rock and introduced chlorine in the white filtering rocks which can harm the fishes, snails in the aquarium.
@SantaMonicaFiltration
@SantaMonicaFiltration 6 жыл бұрын
For freshwater, tap water is fine and has had no effect on scrubber growth or the aquarium after it goes back in (the algae are already saturated so they don't absorb the tap water). For saltwater however, it's a choice: use tap water to kill pods which otherwise eat the algae; this will allow more algal growth and filtering, Or use tank water to keep the pods (which makes more live food) but they'll eat the algae, causing less filtration.
@4me
@4me 6 жыл бұрын
I rinsed white rocks with top water. I think using dechlorinated (not necessary from an aquarium) water for this purpose would do better. The amount of the chlorine from rinsing the white rocks is very little compare to amount of water in even my small aquarium to harm fish, snails, bacteria or plants. Nevertheless, I don't use chlorinated water for rinsing those rock anymore. Thank you!

Can I keep two guppies in a 1 gallon?
@4me
@4me 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size of guppies. Adult guppies could be any size between 2-6 cm. I keep pairs of guppies size less than 3 cm each in 1.5 liter aquariums - it's twice less than 1 gallon. Though, one 6 cm long fish needs about 6 litters (or 2 gallons) minimum. Use an equation to calculate the minimum size of an aquarium based on the size of the fish: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8dlfZxe05-Vpmg.html All the best!

Michael Langerman Thanks! Do all guppy species size are the same when they are adults?
@4me
@4me 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! Guppies, and I believe other fish as well, grow continuously even as adult. Different strains of guppies defined by traits: colors, tale shape and the average adult size. The same age and gender guppies born from the same parents can and often grow of different sizes (colors and shapes as well). That is why there are so many different strains of guppies and you can breed new strain (more than one!) in your life time ;)

Поэтому название ролика - Best Aquarium Filter - it's a LIE.
@4me
@4me 6 жыл бұрын
Вы путаете водоросли с микроводорослями - Algae is not plant or aquatic plant! Дышите глубже, наслаждайтесь Algae не только рыбкины, но и наши с вами отходы перерабатывает :) Algae is the best filter in Nature and in aquariums. Period. Я культивирую разные Algae во всех моих остальных аквариумах - воду не меняю с конца 2016. Подробности изложил в моих видео и ещё будут ;) Всего вам хорошего.

Normally, I give amount of food for fish in all my aquariums enough for them to eat in about 2-3 minutes. You noticed correctly that in this particular aquarium I give much more food. The reason for this was to check how the algae scrubber (not fish!) can handle it. The algae scrubber HOG.5 can handle much more food - I am saying it after one year of testing it in the same aquarium with many more guppies ;)

Cool scrubber, but this is NOT a filter, and will only help to reduce nitrates. It will hardly touch the real nasty stuff like ammonia. Please kids save your money, get a cheap filter or make one, lots of vids out there.

Your comment misrepresents facts. What you said is plainly not true. Algae takes all dissolved in water "nasty" stuff including ammonia. The cheap (or not) filters that you are suggesting remove from water the natural filters called algae that nature provides us for free. You don't like algae scrubbers - look on my small nursery aquariums - no scrubbers or any commercial filters or air pumps from beginning of 2017 till now with no water changing (draining). All cleaning is done by algae and little aquatic critters - simple and free as it is in Nature!

Michael Langerman no I love scrubbers, that's how I deal with nitrates and keep my glass clean. But no, there is not nearly enough surface are on that scrubber to act as any sort of real filtration, algae scrubbers are Not biological filters. Your only getting away with it there because a 50% water change is a couple of jugs of water once a week! When you have noobs and kids watching this that have no idea they are going to take it as gospel truth, and it isn't! Let them try it with a ...duno... heavily stocked 10g community tank!. I'm sure you have sold the company plenty of algae scrubbers tho :-) how about saving them the trouble and stating clearly this is only for tiny tanks and is not a substitute for a biological filter?

Yeah...it is hard concept to grasp on. Let's do experiment. Place 2 tanks with water and fish in it close to window. Place any bio filter in one aquarium and no filter in the other aquarium. Nothing else - no food, no plants. Turn on bio filter. Let the aquariums stay. The tank with no filter will shortly fill up with algae. Fish eat algae and poops. Algae need that poop to grow - more algae- more food for fish. This aquarium is going to be green and alive. The other aquarium with any bio filter will remove fish poops, produce no food-fish die.That is the short story of any "bio" filter but algae scrubber. Algae scrubber is real bio filter allowing you to harvest the algae without exposing aquarium to sunlight (overheating). You don't have to buy any filters - watch my previous videos to see how I keep my aquariums using the same algae and little aquatic critters without any commercial filters and no water changing (draining). Peace out

Hi Geoff, actually scrubbers (algae) are exactly biological filters. And, the favorite food of algae is... ammonia :)

...and spirulina (which is seawater algae) is favorite additional to food for many people (and animals on farms). I don't know why I am writing it here...it's just seems funny to me that people with salty water aquariums put so much efforts in getting rid of algae from their aquariums and at the same time they go shopping for algae :))

you need a real filter the algae scrubber is only for oxygen and to keep the algae from growing in a visible area

Do you mean man-made filters are more real than algae is? Wow! Algae have been filtering our ocean for billions years before any of man-made filters come to this planet. Algae serve this planet with oxygen. Algae serve this planet with food. Algae clean all the mess made by man...including all man-made filters that people trash out. Algae is the real filter I use. And the fun part is that you use it too - no matter how hard you may try to avoid it :)) Enjoy it! ;)

no, I'm not saying that. I'm saying there are no mechanical media. so all the big particles go past it and stay in your tank. there's also not a lot of surface area. so no beneficial bacteria are growing inside the sponge and even if there was the water is not touching them because of the gaps. The water has to go through the pores of the sponge. FYI I love algae so don't jump to conclusions. I understand how important algae is but those other plants can do the exact same thing at the exact same speed so you don't need the scrubber at all plus those plants also act as food once they decay fish and snails eat those ALL THE TIME!!! also, algae cant break down plastic

Hi Junella, actually a UGF does not remove any ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, CO2 or metals. A scrubber (algae) does. And a scrubber put oxygen into the water, and make fish food too :)

That is so beautiful in that small tank with no load or no light. NOT. You have a LOT to learn about filtration to make such claims.
