statistics are true. I crashed 30 days after ownership of my first motorcycle, granted I had my license for 1 year prior but nonetheless its still falls in that statistic of New riders crashing. I was mia for 30days. did physical therapy for 4 months. Im glad I had gear on. wear your gear

It's actually amazing how good Scorpion is for the price. I've been riding the Exo series for a few years now, recently upgraded to 920GT, love it. I would never spend 500 dollars for a helmet when I can get excellent quality for this money.

At today's Fortnine pricing, using many of your video reviews, I was able to equip my-self from the shoulders down for 565$(Can) and that includes taxes!!! Icon Overlord Boots Icon Overlord Jacket Icon Overlord Riding Pants Z1R 270 Gloves I know your opinion is 1 of many, but still... You saved me a lot of hassle, and likely saved me a ton of money on gear I didn't need, or gear that would have been lesser quality than what I was originally looking at. Another great video! I see too many people spend 100% of their budget on the bike then go buy a 10 year old helmet at a yard sale for $5 and wear jeans, sneakers, and t-shirt. This video is great to show a beginner how to get started on a small budget and still be protected.

Just finished my first season, put down over 9,000 miles in 6 months before putting the bike away, and I actually went with full leather. HJC FG17 Helmet (got it free with bike, so I spent the saved money on a bike lock) Alpinestars Leather Jacket Joe Rocket Leather Gloves AGV Sport Leather Pants Alpinestars Waterproof Leather Boots Total: Roughly $1,100. Yeah it's a real heavy suit of leather and armor, but I went down and slid in a turn once and didn't feel hardly anything but a bruise on my hip. Makes you feel pretty invincible, and actually makes it easier to control my bike for some reason. Cant stand riding with no gear, it feels awkward and unplanted. Some people will comment that you're wearing race leathers on a 300, I just tell them that 60 MPH+ on a 300 and 60 MPH+ on anything else is the same thing.

there are people who say "this type of armor ist trash" "this jacket wont protect you" etc when it is about relatively cheap gear. i personally think if you know how to fall and youre a little bit focused on what youre doing you wont hurt yourself in a normal crash like highsider or low sider (crashes with cars involved are a thing of luck). you only need slight protection if youre not a street rossi. you learn how to fall in judo so do some of this and youre fine the rest of your life. my mom (50y) fell so often in her life from trailers, motorcycles, trucks etc and she never got badly hurt because of judo. i did judo too and i can confirm that it works. i never had a motorcycle crash but on skateboard, bycicle, ice skating and everything else i never got hurt because i know how to fall. also you will receive a reflex from judo that makes you never fall on your head. but as always driving predictively is the best way to prevent a crash.

I have started riding 5 months ago and I have chosen the same helmet but instead of one jacket I went with 2 (agv sport torino for under 70 degree weather and agv solare for 70+ ) I'm from US and both jackets cost me $140 + $69 = $210. Same story with gloves. for cold weather I went with touring master, for summer I bought z1r 270 vented gloves (after your video).

I highly recommend the Scorpion brand !!! NO CONCUSSION SYMPTOMS OR LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS! I had the Exo R410 with only first layer paint chips after I was hit going 80km/hr by a car who cut me off... flying over his windshield (that my helmet smashed) and then landing on the pavement which was a soft flat on my back landing (in other words a miracle). The back spoiler has wear to the bottom from resting on the pavement I would assume. ***** Even though the medics didn't notice the emergency tab until I told them, the cheek pads came out without interfering with C-spine protocols! I did loose the visor somewhere in the chaos though. *****

This guy gives great advice, the video's he produces are top quality and he really tells it how it is! No waffle and not afraid to tell you when a product is "shite". I recommend making your first buy your last buy. Why buy something twice? I recommend Aerostich. My suit is over twenty years old, been in a serious accident, and although faded, still going strong. It's still rain, wind, and road proof while being well vented for hot weather.

I'm getting back into riding after a 3 year break (haven't had the time alot if changes been happening in life) and this was awesome...also makes me look back at myself as a teen, when I first started and shake my head like a disappointed father. I rode dirt bikes with a T-shirt and jeans with a pair of cheapo gloves and maybe a helmet if I was doing a rough ride. And that of course translated to the street when I got my first Street bike. Now I'm older and wiser and was looking into a PROPPER riding jacket so these videos have been helpful.

I lucked out on my gear. $300 leather jacket with vault CE armor for $100. $250 hi viz helmet with drop down sun vizor for $89. $150 riding jeans with kelvar lined seat, thighs & knees with vault CE armor for $89. The only things i paid full price for was d3o armor to upgrade from the Vault & my full gauntlet gloves.

I have owned two scorpion helmets in Hiviz yellow. Very good helmets for the price. Comfortable, if a little bit heavy. I will say that the neon yellow does make a difference. Many times in parking lots and even at stop signs cagers will tell me that they noticed the bright yellow helmet.

Love to hear you talk about your favorite beginner motorcycles, have a feeling you may have more then the typical ninja 250 and honda rebel in mind.

Great advice. UK maker OXFORD make some awesome gear. The Montreal 2.0 textile jacket is £130 and beats jackets costing £300 in Ride/MCN tests.

I enjoy your videos and am a F9 customer. From my own experience, I would highly recommend the Olympia Airglide, or something similar in design, as a first all round jacket or just great all round jacket. Why, because it's mesh for hot weather comfort, but has a separate waterproof liner, that stands up and separate thinsulate liner for comfort in cooler temperatures. Plus it's made of cordura and has excellent armor. The advantage it has over the Reactor is it is going to be more comfortable in summertime temperatures, being mesh, but just as comfortable, with liners, into cooler temperatures. You're going to want a separate cold weather jacket for cooler weather eventually anyway, like a full length adv. style jacket, so might as well have something cooler like a mesh jacket, adaptable for cooler temps, as a first jacket, for comfort in late spring, summer and early fall temperatures.

Truly I have enjoyed watching this channel. It is my favorite youtube channel and I want to thank you for producing such valuable content PLUS in such an enjoyable way.

What i normally suggest to New riders for gear is icon and where to shop. Still good quality but not as pricy as so many others. I tell other only reason why I went with dainese is because it's one of the brands that fit me the best for my body type.

My biggest gripe when I started riding is that it was either full leathers or over-the-pants style, both of which are uncomfortable/annoying to put on and make you look stupid just walking around. I'm glad the Icon Hooligan and other similar gear exists now. Same with riding shoes/boots, mine are massive shit-stompers that weigh a ton and aren't all that great but were the best for my budget.

Good review. Buying the right gear is harder than picking a bike. Also, cost vs quality is a big factor so its good to see you can purchase safe and stylish (ish) gear without breaking the bank.

For my beginner gear I got Speed and Strength go for broke armored hoody which was expensive but worth it and fashionable($149.95). Also Icon pursuit touch screen gloves ($85.00). Along with Speed and Strength dogs of war pants(149.95). I wasn't really liking the motorcycle styles so I got Icon 1000 Truant CE boots($200). All together it was about 584.00 at Revzilla and well worth it. I know I spent a lot but I didn't want to take any chances in buying cheaper. They all provide good protection and looks really good aswell

I bought the gloves after watching this video. After half a year the velcro doesn't work so well. Seems to me that $80 is the sweet spot for gloves. I also bought a joe rocket jacket which I'm really not happy with. The zippers are hard to adjust when worn with one hand and they break down too fast. Oh well, you live you learn. Best advise; get what you'll want to wear. I'm a daily commuter and Rev'it is now my go-to brand.

Thank you for a great- well researched and informative- video. I’ll add the Olympia Switchback 2 to the top of the line. It is LOT’S of mesh, Cordura chassis, has an inside-outside rain liner, and, most importantly, it has CE rated elbow, shoulder, and back protection. At $150, it beats almost any other mesh jacket. Pair with their air glide 4 pants.

Thanks Ryan, as a beginner myself, this is all handy info. Unfortunately most of these brands aren't readily available in Australia which is really required for fitting reasons. We do have some decent domestic gear in Oz, but certainly not as many budget options as you guys over the pond. On a different note, would never have picked you as 6'3"! Great vid as always!

Strangely disagree with choice of shorty gloves . The reason is that a longer mid-gauntlet-style glove will go OVER the jacket cuff, sealing out the wind and keeping continuous protection during a slide. I also believe that any jacket should have a higher collar with a closure strap. That makes a huge difference when the temperatures are lower. Yes you could wear a scarf or Neck warmer but a high collar is a very nice feature. Look at the collars on Olympia jackets.

Very good video. I will be a beginner rider this year (hopefully). I do own some of my gear for when my 300cc bike arrives. I will be looking for a modular helmet & will go with the C3 Pro most likely. I already own two jackets; and Icon Overlord and another one by Joe Rocket. As for boots ...I own to short boots; one by Icon ...the Tarmac 2 I think is the name and another by SSGear. I do not own any motorcycle pants right now as I've been wearing just bluejeans for learner so I will be in the market in a few months. As for gloves; I own a pair of short cuff gloves by Icon and AlpineStars. I did find your video very helpful. Thanks for posting!

This is a brilliant channel, there aren't many sites with easy to access information on safety equipment all in one place. Could you also go over the various saftey ratings for helmets ? Some are definitely better than others as with new research older certs aren't the ones to go for.
