BEST benchy? You WON'T guess it! Artillery X3 Pro vs Bambu Lab A1

I compared two very different, but surprisingly similar speedy bed slingers in a head-to-head speed benchy 3D print-off! The Artillery Sidewinder X3 Pro at 300mm/s vs the VERY popular Bambu Lab A1 at 500mm/s.
These machines although priced significantly different, performed so well, I think you will have trouble guessing which printer printed which benchy! Can you guess? Let me know in the comments which printer did the best!
Correction: The A1 uses a single Z motor

I personally said A was the X3 because the faster you print the more you need filament to cool faster and heat up faster and since the filament used is not HS filament it makes sense for a lower speed to perform better.

If Artillery sales out stock we all know who cause it 😊 stellar comparison!!! I do wonder how they perform when printing slower. My A1 when printing PETG needs to be slowed down so I print around 45mms and just has excessive ringging. Mainly due to that speed demon ripping across the bed and knocking the print off the bed, simple tears the print a part.

Outside of the the Hull Line which is a slicing issue, I can't really see any glaring differences. Good job to the X3! Does the X3 have auto-z offset like the A1/K1/P1/X1 or would I still need to do a paper test and then adjust the Z on the fly? (If you can't tell, I'm over live adjusting Z, these printers should be smart enough now!)

So I'm not trying to troll, but genuinely curious. We all know there's a correlation between speed and quality. I'm curious about the results of a benchy sliced at the same speed and settings, set in the same orientation. I assume you printed these at max settings based off of a percentage of the printer's recommended settings. what happens when you disregard the settings and both are set to an equal test? I feel that would give more valid results because it would be a test of the machine and not a recommendation.
@LoyalMoses
@LoyalMoses 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! These are the default sliced models that shipped with the printers. I simply powered the printer on and pressed print. If you slowed down the Bambu it would no doubt be better. The engineers pushed a little too hard to get the speed up and print time down, because the Bambu obviously is capable of far more incredible prints.

Thanks for that comparison, the results are pretty unexpected! There's some significant under-extrusion on the X3 Pro print seen at 4:56 at the top, I think that your flow multiplier might not work too well, the fact that you end up with 0.9x ratios is indicative. My guess is that the tolerances are affected by lack of pressure advance calibration in the corner with the model you've shown in the last video. Then wow, the A1 print is lacking in cooling, that's unfortunate.

I saw a similar test Bamboo A1 Vs Prusa MK4 with the same result, sligtty faster in the A1 but beter quality on Prusa. The real difference is the multicolor print. So if you need the multicolor Bambulab is the right one. If you are on thight budget you may get another one.

@@LoyalMoses what I want to say is that higher temp polymers need less cooling, therefore, results on a1 will be better than the PLA which needs tons of cooling. Benchy is not an easy model to print at high speeds, layers are printed really fast. Artillery seems to print slower, therefore it has more time to cool down. Artillery seems to be a great 3d printer thought

Both prints have pluses and minuses compared to the other, and the fact you used factory gcode makes it a bit awkward of a comparison anyway, especially since Bambu optimizes their gcode for speed rather than quality. I felt like print A came out slightly better overall but I'd still go with a Bambu over a Sidewinder just because of the Bambu ecosystem (which I'm already fully invested in because of my X1C).
@LoyalMoses

That was definitely the point I was trying to make. You can tell the engineers at Bambu wanted to show off the speed. The A1 is an amazing machine, and the ecosystem is like nothing we have ever seen before.

I expected the A example to be from the X3. The extra time should allow a slight improvement in overall print quality. One variable is the filament. It would be interesting to try Bambu Lab filament on both machines with the exact same setup and see whether Bambu Lab dialled their speed benchy in for their own filament.
@LoyalMoses
@LoyalMoses 6 ай бұрын
We can definitely test that!
@technicallyreal
@technicallyreal 6 ай бұрын
It is exactly that. The mfg's provided gcode is tuned for different filament than he tested with, and the A1 is simply printing too fast for it. It's a silly and invalid comparison IMO, as the slower machine will always end up with the better print due to the wrong filament profile being used during slicing.
@boggisthecat
@boggisthecat 6 ай бұрын
@@technicallyreal I don’t know about that. I found that the Bambu Lab filament profiles are set up to be too conservative for other brands. I found printing eSUN PLA+ with Bambu Lab profile for ‘Tough PLA’ yields identical results. So we can’t know for sure unless tested. Filaments do all differ, of course, but most of the same type (e.g. PLA plus) are pretty close when it comes to melt and cooling requirements as there aren’t a lot of differences in the plastics that affect those. (With some exceptions, where ‘engineering’ variants are available with significant blend differences and additive changes. It is starting to become more complicated as even cheap no-name stuff can be very reasonable filament.)
@technicallyreal
@technicallyreal 6 ай бұрын
@@boggisthecat I have used Polymaker PLA Pro myself over the past year and the stuff I have starts to ripple and act weird over 12mm/s³ whereas the default speed for Bambu's own is 21mm/s³. This is why I say there's no way that it's going to come out looking as good with the mfg's gcode. LM should have made proper profiles for each printer. Both prints would benefit and the comparison would end up making sense. As it is, I don't see what is even being compared here.
@boggisthecat
@boggisthecat 6 ай бұрын
@@technicallyreal That’s interesting. Polymaker isn’t readily available here (New Zealand), so I have not tried it. I run PA tests (using Orca Slicer) then a test cube (built-in Orca Slicer one) to verify dimensional accuracy before use. Generally I have not found issues with running the filaments I use the most (eSUN PLA+, and some no-name local stuff from a Chinese OEM) at Bambu Labs flow rates. Abrasives like ‘glow in the dark’ are best dialled back a bit on speed, anyway. It would be useful to have some comparative testing on different brands on a single machine. That way you could extrapolate to your own machine after dialling in one filament.
