If you haven't tried El Toreador on West Portal, do yourself a favor and go. The food is great, the salsa is unique and wonderful, the decor is like an acid trip in Oaxaca, and the fruity drinks are craveable.

I saw burrito and immediately thought “He’ll go El Farolito”… When I was in college in SF in the `90s, there was a 5 or six block section of Mission that held early every food product that I ever needed and El Farolito was its epicenter. Some things never change.

Papalote salsa is phenomenal. You should also check out Tropisueno for their burrito lunch menu, they have an orange salsa that is made from chile de arbol and emulsified oil. It's creamy and delicious, good bit of heat. I get it every time I go back to SF. For a great burger as well, can't recommend Tempest and their Box Kitchen enough, highly revered in town!

Can someone tell me if pupusas come in different grain/dough other than wheat and rice? First time I had pupusas was in a tiny joint, and they made pupusas in a glutinous shell. Panchita's and Papalote absolutely yes. Xiao Long Bao on Clement Street is probably my favorite take out in the city, their daikon puffs are to die for. Also love Club Waziema on Divisadero, Tu Lan at 6th and Market, Emmy's Spaghetti Shack on Mission, El Faro (not to be confused with El Farolito) at 2nd and Mission downtown, and some of the best bread I've ever had was at Arizmendi on 9th Avenue (I know there's a bunch of them, but I lived around the corner from that one and have a love-hate relationship with the memory of waiting across the street for the muni after they'd started baking with the front window open but before they were open for business. RIP to all the late night and all night diners I spent my 20s in: I miss Baghdad Cafe and the Lucky Penny, the Naan-N-Curry on O'Farrell in the Tenderloin, and this place in North Beach that changed names (but not staff or menus) so often my friends just nicknamed it Under New Management.

Panchita's is a core memory for me of living in the Mission in the early 90's. And though I spent decades happily adopting Mission-style burritos as stomach pets, since I moved to the western edge of the City, the lighter, crispier, very fresh fish burritos at Hook Fish in the Outer Outer Sunset has stolen my heart. The other location that I'm thinking of that might have been it was near the See's Candies on El Camino roughly across from Showers drive. Not sure if it was in the place that's now the Whole Foods, and got bulldozed, or if it's one of the other buildings between that Whole Foods and the Jack in the Box just south of there... anyway, whatever Chinese restaurant that used to be there was one I liked (circa early 1990's or so), and I think that was Hunan Home's, at least for a while.

@psychomormon4932
@psychomormon4932 Ай бұрын
@@Kitty8791 I do like el Farolito too. But La Taqueria’s is more flavorful to me. You are right about getting the burrito dorado. La Taqueria’s burritos are super juicy because they don’t add rice, they don’t even offer it. They also use frijoles de la olla. Rice absorbs juices, but I’m not a huge rice fan. If you like rice and refried beans more, then yes, el Farolito is the burrito to get. I always order all my burritos without rice. Don’t like cheese and sour cream in a burrito either. Just salsa, pico de gallo, and sometimes guacamole/avocado. But can’t go wrong with either one. Both La Taqueria and el Farolito are great, just different. El Farolito is a better bang for your buck, they fill you up more. You are right about the crowds in La Taqueria, it can be annoying. That’s all thanks to their burrito dorado de carnitas winning best burrito in many publications, and like you said, being recognized as a Michelin Star eatery.
@Kitty8791
@Kitty8791 Ай бұрын
@@psychomormon4932 Yes, the no rice thing is another fact. Once in a while it's fine, but I tend to like rice in my burrito. Wrt beans, I prefer black to pinto beans. I like cheese, but not sour cream. I'll add guacamole. At El Farolito, getting a Super Burrito, but saying no sour cream was cheaper than adding cheese & guac to a regular burrito. We should also note that both were cash only (effectivo); I swear I always had to cover for other folks.

Lordy, how my social circle badgered me - often the token Mejican in the convo - for my “best burrito” pronouncement when I could do no better than claiming my favorite, El Farolito. I was a little coy, but the truth remains that I found a burrito that I really liked. I wasn’t on the hunt for the best so I couldn’t make the claim. (Another truth: I probably get tortas there more often than burritos. Color me naughty….) In a fantasy world, I’d take the tamal torta [as presented in CDMX etc] as inspiration for a pupusa torta, possibly with a Mexi-hacked curtido.

El Farolito is #2 spot for me. Ive taken longer layovers in SFO to take a uber into mission to grab a burrito from my #1 - Taquria Cancun off mission, the one by the Warfield is almost as good.

So Adam… what’s your favorite place to eat after 2am? When I was doing theater and music gigs, Grubsteak was one of the only places open. Ok, now…. For a new salsa experience, head over to Tropisueño in the Yerba Buena center. Dude. I was working on 4th and Folsom and my wife would DEMAND that I get a couple PINTS of their salsa a week. They always looked at me funny when I ordered it and always thought I misspoke. Heh. If you ever need a buddy to share the experience with, I’ll meet you there any time!! Unfortunately I work in Cupertino at Apple Park now, but I still live in Alameda, and would hop over to SF any time!! Check out the new coffee joint that is across the street from the 4th street Whole Foods too. It is an experience, and there is Turkish Delight there that comes right out of Lion Witch and the Wardrobe. :) Thanks for the update! I love remembering that you are in the area. Take care!

Been to every one of these reccos, and agree with all. SF is such a great food town. I'd add a shout for Firefly on 24th, which has been serving consistently outstanding meals since I moved to SF in 1998.

I went to SF State and used to eat at Ocean Taqueria #3 “they just put a number in front of it” 😂. It’s closed now but was for sure my favorite burrito. So good. I miss it. You made me miss the bay. Thank you Adam!

I used to live up in the Tacoma, WA area and had a few favorite places up there as well that I still hit anytime I'm visiting that area. Ma's Place in Puyallup has the absolute best comfort homemade style food! Branks BBQ in Sumner has killer BBQ, and THEKOI in downtown Tacoma is a great upscale Sushi restaurant.

The important thing to note is that you have to get the papalote salsa fresh from the store. Bi-Rite carries a jarred version that doesn’t do the restaurant justice

I held my breath to make sure you gave the *correct* answer regarding The Best Burrito in SF. We lived at 22nd and Folsom during the 90's, and ate at Farolitio at least 3 times per week. Its where I first experienced a grilled tortilla, which is now compulsory for any burrito. It is also where I developed the theory that the signature of any well-wrapped burrito is that you can stand it up on its end. Their fresh carrot juice and agua frescas are also amazing. Ugh! I am so hungry now!!! P.S. I also love Foreign Cinema. Order the lemon press cocktail.
