My grandmother used to grow enormous pots of bright pink flowered Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus in her enclosed back porch. She gave me one as a teenager and I promptly killed it. I asked her about them shortly before her death and I learned they'd been outside when it got too cold and they all died. Now I try to grow them in her memory. Desert cacti do fine all year here in NC although I do sometimes bring them inside on very cold nights just in case! Cacti are really cool. I'm especially fond of the fuzzy/hairy/cobwebbed ones.

don't know if i posted this before, but i maintain and grow a couple thousand jungle cactus at the los angeles arboretum... some quick tips for these guys... they do need way more water than a common cactus... if they're outside, a once a week, or sometimes twice a week shower if it's hot... they need a very loose soil, almost airoid mix... we use a third orchid bark, third perlite, and a third of violet mix, or shade mix... anything that is considered an acid mix... they love being root bound... the more root bound the better... these plants grow in the "crotch" of other trees on loose leaf litter... their roots don't spread out or anchor them, but they do keep them compact... and in place... dappled, or filter light is best... they need airflow... and most of them their fruits are edible... the rhip you have growing in water might be rhipsalist micrantha... the other looks like rhipsalis capilliformis... well, the guys in the club got into an argument because we weren't sure what it was... but i got one just like it from walmart, and this past heat wave i got, it died... i had it in the living room... good luck with your plants... great video like always...

also, we only fertilize them twice a year... LOL... well, rhipsalis aren't grown for their blooms... but if you grow eiphyllum, you fertilize for flowers around february, before spring... depends on the weather... once it gets warmer, use ferts for blooming... then after the blooming season (spring) fertilize for growth... they will grow all the way until say november... well, here anyways... then you cut back on watering and fertilization... hope that helped... lol...

Interesting that you have orchid bark in your cactus soil mix. I might try mixing some of those in with my cactus soil when I repot. My cacti are outside in the spring and summer. I give them a really good watering every two weeks. In the fall and winter I give each a little bit of water once a month. I do have a melocactus azureus that I think is used to a more tropical climate, so I give it more water than my other cacti even in the winter. I have a rhipsalis from walmart too that is dropping leaves like crazy. I have no idea if it's dying or not. It's not overwatered or under watered - I always check the soil with a meter to see if I should water or not. It's in a bright, indirect light location. I do not have high humidity in my apartment. Do you have any idea the reason for dropping leaves ? Thanks.
@GumbiiGrows
@GumbiiGrows Жыл бұрын
@@AT-jm4dl ugh, i hate that... they drop the whole stem from the base right...?? it's just not happy where it's at... it could also be rotting from the roots... this is why we grow them in such loose soil... we don't have the steady temps that the growers have in their green house... always repot... the reason we use perlite and bark and not pumice, and vermiculite is because all our plants are in hanging baskets... it's lighter this way... sucks to water them, but give it like a 1" lip... repot it, check the roots... once the roots are gone, they won't grow back... all it's doing is making cuttings of itself and trying to root somewhere else... and like i said, they need air flow and a bit more light than you think... they do way better outside than inside the home...

Thanks so much! Just what I needed. I removed my two easter cactus plants to an area where they will receive reduced lighting/daylight basically. The rest of my cacti are in the spa garden with artificial light 12-14 hours per day. The lights in there are on timers. Plan to leave settings 12-14 throughout entire year. Will be first winter with mini cacti.

Since watching you I've been inspired to buy cacti. My 11 year old daughter and I have purchased quite a few cuties. I'm in love with them all. 2 are flowering now. One has the cutest little salmon pink flowers, with burgundy spikes and lots of white fluff. I stare at her all the time. 😉

Tip for terraccoa weight confusion to see if they need watering.: weigh the pot just after repotting before watering and jot it down, then weigh again after watering & jot it down and then if you're not sure if you should water it, weigh it again to check where it is between those two weights!

Hii so if we have a holiday cactus and it blooms in the winter nov/dec is it considered dormant? Or is it growing and we should be ok to fertilize during that time?

I just saw my cactus leaning and I was confused so I went to check it out and I noticed that the bottom of it, that was touching the soil was all bubbly and watery. I assume it's root rot? I didn't water it often, maybe once a month and the water would drain out automatically.. so I don't know if maybe the soil didn't dry all the way through in between the watering. So I came on here and found your video.. I'm curious about the different layering technique of how some people place big stones in the pot first before the soil and even small pebbles at the top.. if that can help with the drainage? I don't know what the best layering technique is. I'd love it if you can suggest what the best thing to do is. Thanks!

I have a question. In the video you mentioned they love to be bottom watered but I’ve done some research and I’ve seen that some say to not bottom water because you don’t know how much water the root ball is taking in or consuming. Is that true? I really want to bottom water by cacti but I don’t want to kill them:(

Cacti are not tiny dwarf plants who want to be in toy sized pots. Cacti can grow very quickly. A spiral column such as Cereus forbesii spiralis or Cereus peruvianus spiralis can grow 3' in a season even as a young plant. Don't torture these plants in tiny pots. The paper spine cactus is a version of the pine cone cactus. In a season, one section of pine cone cactus can fill a 10" pot with many stems up to 24" tall. That's one year. Yes, I live in Tucson. I grow a lot of cacti. Add pumice to potting mix to make it gritty and well draining. Don't be afraid to fertilize. Osmocote is fine. At the time of planting. Balanced fertilizer is ok. Here we fertilize with granular 3x a year. One last example: I started with a 6" container with 2 stems of my silver torch cactus, Cleistocactus strausii. I have a 25" container filled with stems up to 6' tall in only 3 years. Come visit Tucson and you'll have a whole new perspective on these beautiful and vigorous plants. To mimic us, add light. You'd have a blast visiting us.
