I have the NIkon Zf with the 50mm f1.8 and I've never been happier. The thing is a tank and gives me all the feels of shooting my old film bodies.

Best sports and wildlife photography is Nikon Z9/Z8, they are cheaper than Sony and Canon and come very close to their AF performance, they have better telephoto and zooms lens selection right now.

Thanks! Excellent summary. I am at an age when time flies very fast. Apart from using my digital Olympus (when it was Olympus) when I have to show my shots in a workshop, I found a second great use for it. With the Valoi system, it is great for digitizing negatives. At 20 MP, I get great results for an amateur. I can even go to 50 MP, but only in JPEG, so worthless for post processing 😇.

Nikon Z if you're a hooligan and kicking your camera down the street every day. [The Z bodies are incredibly robust.] Panasonic S5ii/x if you're Hollywood's future Oscar-winning DP, but still limited to budgets of $2000 while you won't touch a camera without built-in waveform monitor, vectorscope, anamorphic desqueeze and 6K Open Gate.

Hi I am wondering if the Sigma 30 mm F1.4 DC HSM is anything good would get the Sigma 18-35/1,8 DC HSM Art for Canon but the priceses have not gone down. I got the canon m50 with the adapter and atm really happy with it but my 2 lenses so far is not so good at videoing and low light scenarios.

6:56 Fuji "medium format" so cheap ??? The Fuji GFX100 II camera body is the same price as the Hasselblad ! I do not and never will think about "street credits" ! The Hasselblad brand is today owned by the Chinese DJI, so reliability is higher for the Japanese Fuji !

I agree the FUJI MF cameras are not cheap, but I disagree with your statment about chinese manufacturing. If you had held one of these in our hands yourselves, you would quickly understand that Hasselblad quality of manufacturing is aligned with the likes of Leica, and as such above the Fuji Stds, and way above anything that is manufactured in Japan today. Meanwhile, all Hasselblad equipment is manufactured in Sweden, not China.

I think camera choice is very personal. For me it need to be Canon or Panasonic L mount cameras. That's because ergonomics, the front dial (index finger dial) in other cameras is uncomfortable for me. My index finger rubs my mid finger and I can't hold the camera in a relaxed and firmly way. With Canon that's solved because the index finger dial it's behind the shutter, and in Panasonic L cameras is around the shutter (S5II) or in a very differentiated step above the grip. I love Nikon colors and overall image rendition, but the ergonomics aren't for me. I hope you try the Z8 in 2024, maybe someone at Nikon Europe can lend you the camera and some lenses, you are an important youtuber and photographer, so it's an opportunity for Nikon itself. Nikon could be a candidate in the budget landscape boat anchor category. Used D800E with a standard or wide lens. Nikon glass is cheaper now that everyone is buying z lenses.

For me and my needs, Nikon Z was an obvious choice for the following reasons: 1) fullframe (unlike Fuji or m43), 2) affordable (unlike Sony), 3) had focus bracketing (unlike Sony), 4) had good selection of macro lenses (unlike Canon), 5) offered a professional not too crippled body (unlike Canon). I'm talking about Nikon Z5, which offered all these 4 points, plus is weather-sealed, has dual SD-card slot, has a proper battery (unlike Canon RP / R8). On the other hand my case is very specific and not many people have the same needs as I do. Note: I was buying before Sony released "lower-end" bodies which finally have focus bracketing.

Matti, thanks for unbiased & partially tongue-in-cheek reviews. My additional category is "Vintage" & nominee is Nikon F2, which was a more solid & better camera than original Nikon F. My understanding is F2 was last hand made Nikon camera & it just oozed character plus felt very good in the hand. Of course later F series bodies were more advanced, but lacked that something the F2 had.

As a Leica fan I'd so love to afford digital Leica (used probably) some day. Film Leica (M6) has been my favorite for street photography from all cameras I've used. It was my favorite holiday cam too, along with another (different film speed mostly or even a roll of color film).

Nikon D810 & a Sigma Art 28mm or 24-105mm * If lightweight is needed, the Nikon D600 & Nikon AFD 28mm F2.8 Importantly 💡 if I had the money, I'd buy a Nikon D850 new. Use Sigma Art 28mm & buy Sigma 100-400mm or use 24-105mm

I think my Nikon Zf is very nice travel camera, specially with the vintage look and manual controls, SE lenses are my go lenses for street photography and carry on, but I have also few F4 S lenses for best picture quality.

I shoot Nikon, Lumix, and Ricoh. The Z mount system is really nice, since the lenses are really, really nice. That said... I recommend Nikon if you're wanting a good budget DSLR, that takes wonderful images with older, less expensive lenses. Nikkor lenses are mostly excellent... and a good used D700 or D800 can be yours for less than $500 USD. Used Nikkor lenses are a bargain for the quality vs. price ratio. So... if you're on a budget, looking for quality... the used Nikon market is the way to go.

In the old days I used a Pentax Z1. What a great camera. Then came the digital era. After extensive study I went for Nikon. What a disappointment. The Nikon D70s truly drove me away from photography. For many years now I just use my iPhone. But I want to find my way back into the world of cameras. So far I feel mostly lost in this misty forrest of brands and variety of techniques. Where is trusted Pentax?? Thanks for the overview. People advised me the Nikon Z6. But I dread the brand.

Nikon recommendation : Get an old D600 or D800 and some D lenses and have a blast. And if your total photography budget is $100, get a Nikon D75/F75 and you'll have enough left over to buy a roll and have it processed. Can't do video with a film camera, but you can't rollerskate in a Buffalo herd either.

oh wait is renting not an option at all to try nikon? kinda wishing nikon has a hand in competing with the a6700 and canon r7. would be nice having subject detection with eye focus on animals including birds to add to their APS-C line

I'm not sure I can rent a Nikon in Finland and even if I could, it would probably cost quite a lot for two-three weeks. Makes more sense to buy and then I can use it as long as I like.

...and for those sports shooters I'd recommend the new Sony A9 III, but ONLY if 'only' 24 megapixels are enough ;). It'll be interesting to see how the global shutter will evolve to include also higher resolution models, but I imagine there are some problems to solve with that crazy speed combined with resolution...memory card speeds, overheating etc.

If Leica makes a "Q"-style minimalist Leica with a very good EVF and Leica M-mount, I might be one of the buyers. I do not like the black & white only cameras, you need to use filters for the Lenses to get the best out of those cameras, where as a color Camera you have much better options in post software. "Street"-camera 🤣 well back in the good old days we called those for "candid" cameras (well I have never in the old days heard of a "candid" camera, only the use of a camera for candid photography), the best one in my opinion is the Minox 35 ML and a Camera like that style in digital with EVF would be "perfect", I think nearly any fairly smaller Camera can be used for street photography, I use Sony A7RIV. I will not recommend MFT for beginners, I recommend Sony, there are so many Cameras from Sony, new and used and there are Lenses for all pockets and all kind of use. I agree on the Hasselblad X2D, but I wish for a XD2II with better EVF and redesigned back side screen and a joystick or a XD3 with 157 megapixels.

How odd! Having watched your and Peters videos for years, I realise that I can be honest in my comments! With the prices of the Leica and Phase one gear I’ve no idea how you can recommend those to most people. I agree that with all the lens choices for Sony it would be easy to recommend their gear, unless you don’t like their ergonomics. Canon mirrorless would be a good choice but their lenses are expensive and the lack of third party support is unfortunate. You didn’t really promote om system cameras much? Second hand prices on Olympus gear is great at the moment. You really must try Nikon gear in 2024. I have a Z50 and now my Fuji just collects dust, in fact with the Nikon Zfc and the Zf I can’t see why I’d by any Fuji other than GFX now. Did you really recommend that new odd Phase One box camera? I love Capture One and their regular 150Mpix cameras look extremely desirable, but the new one looks unusable to me. My suggestions: a Zf + Z 28mm (or 40mm) for street photography or a Z8 + Z 14-30mm for landscapes. Cheap option: Zfc + Z 24 f1.7 to hide in your jacket...

You forgot about a film camera recommendation, because real photographers only shoot film. Obviously the only choice is Leica M6, or for the more impoverished film buyer, Lomography’s Diana for shooting real medium format.

You missed out not using Nikon Cameras and their new lenses. It does say though you are a little biased with your preferences, that's fine because everyone has their own life experiences. What I look for when the so called Pro's give a review about a Camera is an "honest" one, where the have tested and used that Camera and have not been influenced by sponsers and money making schemes! All the best.

Everyone is biased more or less and whether they want it or not. Every review is also just one person's opinion to some extent. You should always read/watch more than one review before you buy anything based on a review. Thanks for watching.

If you shoot B&W with a monochrom digital camera , you will get beautiful results but….you need to use real colour filters depending the subject. If you want to avoid using such filters, you have to go from a coulour sensor and work on post processing.So I will not buy a monochrom camera.

I heard Fuji cameras break a lot. If I were to get a medium format it would be a gfx 50r but since I heard they break easily, I would definitely get a used Hasselblad. I still think Leica lenses are king but I don’t like the direction the Leica brand is going lately. They seem to be getting even more expensive than ever before 😮

I have a (now old) X-E3 and while it hasn't failed on me it does feel like if it falls it's going to break. It's reliable for the most part but construction doesn't feel sturdy enough to take a beating; higher tier series could be better but can't comment on them as I don't own any. The Hasselblad X2D does look like a solid option, especially those leaf shutter lenses. Leica... well, the M3 feels like it could (and probably has) survive a war; M240 is also a brick but M11 and the film ones MA/MP/M6 could be better and way cheaper.

@@smith507 that's good to hear. The xe-3 is a great camera. Possibly one of the last few reasonably priced compact rangefinder designs in the modern mirrorless age where eveything is becoming the size of SLR again. Think of that... Lately, I have been shooting landscapes with a used 1970s canada Leitz 90mm 2.8 lens which I got for like £400... and a japanese Amazon import of a sigma fp for £1000 new. I feel like the camera I have is like a true weapon if you wanted to hurt someone with it and it would be fine. Absolutely no IBIS required with this light gathering beast of a small system...

Really, no Nikon? The Z5, which is only $997 with a 40mm lens is great for the street. It is light enough and small enough, and has no problem with focusing. I have no need for Ricoh. The Lumix GX-9 is another camera I use allot for the street. Mated with Leica 15mm or Olympus 25mm, to name a couple, it is a street photographers dream camera. I have no need of a Fujifilm x100v. As for Ricoh GrX & III, I guess it has its goodness, though dust in the lens, and focusing appear to be not its its glory selling points. MFT appears to be a dead-end, but I have all the cameras I need at this time. The future me will most likely be that of Nikon. I aways seem to return home to Nikon, no matter how many years and camera I stray. The Canon RP is not bad, though I don't like flippy screens -- hate those, and the new 28mm lens feel short of my expectations after seeing all the great reviews. Maybe a bad copy? The Nikon Z5 just kicks butt on the RP. I should sell it. - Loren

I had a Z5 with the 50mm 1.8S and regret selling it. A truly amazing combo. Got them on sale for $999 and $529 a couple years ago and would still happily pay that today. I jump systems a lot. I’m currently shooting with a G9 with laowa 17 1.8, and the lumix 25 and 42.5 1.7. I used to shoot a lot of wildlife and macro and have had a few Nikon d7100 and D7200s, and canon 70D with various lenses. I also had a couple G85 and E-M1 mkii in the past. The Z5 remains one of my favorite cameras I’ve ever owned. It doesn’t have the speed of some of the others but the autofocus and image quality far exceeded its price in my opinion. I was not interested in the RP or canon’s entry level 50mm. The Z5 with the 50 1.8S was a great combo. Weather sealed with ibis, good eye autofocus for my daughter and our pets, and great image quality in a decent sized package.

Why MFT a dead end? Panasonic and OM keep dropping phenomenal cameras in that system line up. And yea I agree why no Nikon the Zfc was a phenomenal retro cam and the Z series in general has received AMAZING firmware updates

@@ContraGrain They dropped the GX-9 and PEN F, so I assume they have no consideration for street and travel photography. It seems the video centric cameras, and maybe some OM systems cameras for wildlife adventures are the focus for Lumix and OM systems. I wonder how OM systems is doing these days -- any future?

@@lorenschwiderski I suspect they’ll likely drop a new travel cam, but the G9ii was more photographer focused, I don’t think the system is dead. People have been saying it’s dead for nearly 3-4 years now and we keep getting new bodies and lenses.

I would look at 2 Nikons: (1) the Nikon S3 2000 Limited Edition for Film, which comes with the usual 50mm lens. and (2), the Nikon Zf for digital. I would also couple the Zf with the Voightlander 58mm f/1.4 SLii-S with the silver nose for the Nikon F-mount, with the FTZ adapter.
