I repair and use a rare Yamaha mt44 four track tape recorder, considered superior to the Tascam portastudio. If you’re into old school multi track recording, cassette tapes, analog gear, and home recording studio builds, then I think you’ll enjoy this.
Congratulations, if you are watching this you are an absolute nerd. This is a super rare analog 4-track cassette recorder machine from the 1980s. It was sold as a modular unit with a mixer and patchbay, and it’s considered superior to the tascam portastudio because you can mix and match higher quality preamps, and bypass a lot of extra circuitry that’s in the other machines. In fact I have a tascam m30 analog board, and a tascam 388, both of which I could use as the front end for this tape machine. I didn’t even consider using a 4 track, but someone in my comments section recommended it, so when I saw this for super cheap, I decided to buy it. But it ended up being free! #salvage
Story of the barn studio: • Building a Home Record...
I bought this cassette deck for $100. Turns it out was broken. When I told the seller, he just gave me my money back and told me to keep it. It had two big problems with it. One was that I couldn’t get it out of play mode, and into record mode. Turned out to be a simple fix, but it took my way too long to figure out. The second problem was that there was no input signal. That problem was a little more complicated, and required disassembling the machine soldering it (incorrectly the first time), then buying the correct part, then re soldering to the trace board, then reassembling. If you’re good with electronics this will seem all very simple to you, and I will look stupid to you. If you know nothing about electronics, this will seem complicated, and I will still look stupid to you. For me, it was a learning experience.
Tascam m30: • Tascam m30 (Tascam 388...
Like I say, I’m not a hipster. I need to do digital recording for my job. I also prefer it. I grew up using it. But there is something simply cool and fun about analog recording, and I'm always looking for ways to warm up or lo fi cold sounding recordings. For my work, there isn’t a lot of opportunity to record straight to tape, but, as I demonstrate in this video, sending my mixes back out to tape is definitely a possibility and something clients might enjoy.
What do you think? To my ears, the mt44 def adds saturation, the lows get distorted quicker, low bass gets cut out, but it sounds a lot brighter to me. Do you hear that? I’m eager to do more tests and compare this against the my tascam 388 and my tascam portastudio 424.
If you’re interested in this type of stuff, let me know, so I’m not just a crazy person alone in a barn. kzfaq.info?su...
Thanks to my friend, Alex Wilkerson, a talented bassist, electrician, and genius!

I've worked on electronics for about 35 years and we all have to learn somewhere. You don't look stupid at all. It is very cool that you take the time and try to analyze how the thing works and not just going in there like you know it all. As far as you getting it for free, that's awesome for the aggravation that you went through making this work. About 3 1/2 years ago I bid on a Tascam MSR 16, 16 track reel to reel. In the description it was for parts/not working. When it arrived, it took everything I have to get it up two flights of stairs because I'm not that young anymore. I ended up getting it for under $300.00. I bid on it because something like that doesn't come up every day. It was said to not go into play mode. It looked like the machine had been dropped. When I tried it out, it absolutely didn't work. However, I took the front panel with all of the pushbuttons and because it got crunched, there were several buttons being pushed simultaneously. When I separated the board from the chassis, it worked. However, my one friend has a Tascam 40-4 and it had a bad pinch roller. Sure enough immediately after winning the bid, I immediately ordered a pinch roller tire. The part that they said was broken didn't cost me anything. I actually took that bent piece at the music store that I worked at in the 1980s that I did electronic repairs at because they also fixed band instruments and I took it to the owner and he looked at it. He put it in the vise and gave it a whack in a position that I would have never thought of and straightened it enough to get the board in with just one whack (Thanks Dan) and he didn't charge me anything. After pulling the gummy pinch roller off, cleaning the metal shaft and gluing the new one on, it works perfectly and sounds beautiful. All channels work and the heads are pristine. Just keep doing what you're doing and people will flock to you for advice and repairs. Great video.

@@travisraab I think your backstory is cool in a sense that you're rescuing this vintage equipment that may seem like it needs a lot, but it really doesn't. FYI I published some music using this machine as well. You can look it up if you wish but there are about seven or eight songs out there on my topic page and I did a video on my regular page testing the machine out and recorded a very sloppy version of Very Last Day by Peter Paul and Mary. I played the guitar, bass, and sang all of the parts. Have a great day and Merry Christmas.

Dude! I still have mine. I bought it in 1984, and it STILL WORKS! Also, way back then, I taped down one of the reflective strips in front of the 4-track mode sensor, just as you've done, and that's still in place. Probably most everybody who bought one of these did that. 🤓 I have pulled several EPs worth of multis of my four-decades-old original material into the Mac from this machine. And even though the tracks were recorded at a glacial 1 7/8 ips (the only option on this deck), I've been able to get them to sound pretty good with some judicious use of plugins in my DAW. I originally had the mixer as well, but I sold it when I found a used TASCAM Model 3 board a couple years later. Belated thanks for posting this!

Your story is funny for me Travis. My first 4 track K7 was the MT44. I have discovered multitrack recording with it. That was back in the 1980s ( I was 21 ). Then came my Atari with PRO24, my first computarised midi sequencer in 1982 ... then I bought a Tascam 388 that was gonna be my main multitrack recorder for decades with my Atari and Cubase. I did not changed these in my home studio until 2010 where I put my hands on Ableton Live on a Macmini ... I sold my 388 ( with regrets ... ) but I am so well today with Ableton Live ;-)

My buddy and I together owned this system (without the patch bay) in 1984. He had the recorder and I had the mixer so we joined forces. Surprised to hear the MT44 sounds the best, if only because it only runs at 1-7/8 with no option to double it. That bucket brigade delay gets pretty tiring when it's your only option. A good reverb would have been more useful. The whole sticker mechanism was odd. Why not just a switch? We had a lot of fun with it and lots of frustration listening to the sound degrade once you ping-ponged your original tracks, since 4 is never enough. Love the video. Been loving yr channel. I still have my mixer and even have used it to pre-amp and distort tracks. The MT44 needs some TLC as some wires are definitely no longer connected. Cheers!

Artist name and album - Viktor Tsoi, Blood Type. This is probably the main figure of Russian rock of the last century (and even now). Moreover, the guys mixed it all by recording directly into the MT-44D, and then only processed it with an equalizer and a cheap reverb. And it sounds like a mix... The master was on a modernized reel-to-reel Soviet recorder. Crazy thing. There are hundreds of plugins people use right now, but they don't come close to that sound. Having learned this story, I decided that I would write all the music on analogue. I don't have any money yet, but I hope to be able to buy this cassette in a couple of months.

Sounds Great. Those older systems were such a marvel of Engineering that even if it does not fully function they are so beautiful to look at, not like the robotic garbage we have nowadays and don't even try to fix some of the new stuff they are just too cheaply built to even repair.

@@travisraab hi there..we are kindred spirits but technically you are a hundred miles ahead of me. 2 or 3 years ago i got around 20 grand. i spent most of it on instruments but i never got a 388 because tbey were priced 1.5 to 2.5 grand and that seemed very expensive. 5 years before they were 500 to 1000? Now they are 3 tp 5000? I can see why. They look amazing to use,. Almost as easy as a DAW but with the equivalent of many of the best plugins chucked in for free. I've wasted years trying to get a sound that this machine seems to impart naturally. It seems to be better than many semi pro tape multitrackers performing way higher in spec than it should on paper. Seems to me a good way of getting a much better deal is buy one fir parts for 500 to 800 dollars then get it repaired

Not an electrician haha (or electronics technician, to use a somewhat more accurate term), but please poke around inside your electronics with a wooden chopstick or something that's not not metal aka not a conductor and only use one hand, which would help prevent a complete circuit and lessen the chances of being shocked. Cool stuff though. Old stuff is fun. Also, soldering/desoldering printed circuit boards is a special skill.
