I'm going on holiday to Tokyo this July for two week, I don't want to have to go out for an expensive lunch/dinner everyday though so this video is really helpful. Also it's great that you included places that still do the more traditional Japanese food that everyone goes to japan to try like tempura and takoyaki. I will definitely be visiting a few of the places you recommended!

When we're talking about Asian food, In Japan (and certainly East & Southeast Asia in general), rice is always THE staple and main dish, never the side dish (like in America). So it's "rice with a side of curry", not "curry with a side of rice". I remember when I first came to the US and went to Panda Express, the server told me to choose a side dish and I pointed at the Orange Chicken. Then he told me "No, what SIDE dish you want, rice or chow mein?" and I said "RICE IS NOT SIDE DISH!!" LOL

If your in the convenience store, look for triangle packaged seaweed(nori). This is Onigiri, a riceball stuffed with delicious things and wrapped in nori. It is absolutely one of the best things on earth.

Not all convenient stores have trash cans outside of or in them. Some convenient stores even have their trash cans blocked up so that you can't throw out any garbage, I guess this is done because they can get so much garbage it can be a pain.

Great job with the video! Out of curiosity, with Pepper Lunch being also in Taiwan as you covered that in your video a few weeks ago, are there any differences with the Pepper Lunch in Tokyo compared to Taipei? Nevertheless, it looks quite tasty!
@YellowProductions
@YellowProductions 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scottman! In Japan they are primarily "counter seating" and in Taiwan they are "quick serve" at tables. Taiwan has a few additional menu items, like Salmon that I don't usually see in Japan. Tastes pretty similar.

Japanese convenience stores totally ruined me when I came back to America. Now I go into 7-11 here and just sigh. Although Japanese 7-11s don't have Slurpees, so we've got that, I guess. You should have made a mention of the "conveyer belt" sushi places and other places with inexpensive sushi. Coming from a landlocked state, even their "cheap" sushi beats anything I can get at home.

Pepper Lunch is way too expensive in Canada. I wish in Canada they followed the same price lines as they are in Tokyo or across the world.
@morisoba2550
@morisoba2550 7 жыл бұрын
Not only Pepper lunch but also many Japanese chain restaurants outside Japan are the same. Also not only in Canada. For example, Restaurant Ootoya serve the lunch menu for 25 dollar or 2500 yen in New York or Melbourne, which they serve for 700 yen here in Tokyo. The New York or Melbourne one has more gorgeous portions, but way too expensive as Tokyo standard. And conveyor belt Sushi in North America, Australia or Singapore are too expensive too. In Japan it's a kind of fast food and one plate Sushi (2 Nigiri) cost 100 or 150 yen, but they serve it for 3 dollar or 300 yen in North America. I guess the reason is because those foods are daily food or fast food in Japan like Subway or McDonald's in North America.

With or without sales tax. Sales tax is compulsory and is currently 8% in Japan. You will have to pay the price with sales tax, but tipping and service charges are uncommon and not expected in Japan.
