The Zoom Sampletrak ST-224 is a cheap alternative to classic samplers such as the AKAI MPC 2000XL, Roland SP-404, and Emu SP-1200. It has gained a lot of hype over the years with many producers adding it to their arsenal of music production equipment.
This vintage sampler gives Lo-Fi qualities, similar to production styles like Kanye West, Pete Rock, J Dilla, Madlib etc. In terms of cheap samplers, the modern standard is pocket operators such as the PO-33 K.O! by Teenage Engineering, but the Sampletrak is a strong option that costs slightly more, if you can find one.
These samplers are fairly rare to find for sale on websites such as eBay and Facebook Marketplace, compared to counterparts such as the Korg Electribe ES1 and BOSS SP-202 Dr. Sample. They also use a SD card predecessor called the Smart Media Card which is also rare and expensive.
In this review and tutorial I highlight the pros and cons as well as show five techniques of using the device. These include stereo imager, Lo-Fi effect + compressor (replicating BOSS SP-303 Dr. Sample vinyl sim compressor), pitch shifting, sampling and reducing sample rate The samples used in this demonstration are available royalty free on my Looperman page.
This sampler, although limited, is perfect for creating everything from 90s Hip Hop beats to the modern Lo-Fi beats you would hear on any Lo-Fi Girl stream.
Commonly referred to as the Poor Man’s SP-1200, I prefer to call it the Broke Producers SP-1200. I hope you enjoyed this my thoughts about it.
Let me know what you think of it?

The easiest way to get grit out of it is to set the sample rate to "standard" and then just use the classic method of speeding the sample up to 45 rpm (or +5 semitones you're sampling off something digital) and then pitching it back down once it's in the machine. Overdriving the inputs also fattens drum samples up pretty well. As for it's shortcomings, they don't really impact my workflow since I just record the sounds out of it into a "better" sampler once I get the vibe I'm looking for

I started being interested in making electronic music at around 2002. My first drum machine was a Zoom RT-234, I loved that thing. Some time later, I spotted a Sampletrak at a local second hand shop for about 50 dlls, I didn't pick it up and they had it on a shelve for about two months, the day I decided to pick it up, the guy told me he sold it the day before. Weeks later, someone saw me going on this drum machine and offered me an Electribe EA-1 ($80), weeks later I picked up a Yamaha AN200 ($150), then a Roland SH-32 ($125)... What I'm getting to is, that during that period and because of the popularization of electronic music made with old Roland gear (808, 909, 303), companies were producing the groovebox format everywhere, starting with the horrible MC-303 Groovebox, as DSP chips could do the work that previously required larger components and boards. So yes, there's a lot of samplers (and synths) produced during that period that are DSP based: Korg Electribes, Yamaha Loopfactory series, Zoom RTs and ST, Boss/Roland SPs. A lot of gear from this period has a particular 'sound' (as in lower quality turn-of-the-century-cheaper components-digital sound) but it was intended as entry level gear (kind of like the Volcas today). As you said, the quality of this gear is an equivalent of around $200, there's some of the boxes that I mentioned that go up to $700!! Imagine paying $500 dlls for a Volca Bass some years from now, or $400 for a Volca FM, it is just not worth it. I finally got my Sampletrak in 2020 for $100 and I love it, more so, because of almost 20 years of wanting it (same thing with the Yamaha DX200). (Look for this youtube video -Electronic Jam / Juno-60 / SH-32 / AN200 / Lexicon Alex-). That's me in 2010 with some of this gear... Cheers m8!

Haha you make an amazing point my friend, the idea of a Volca selling for 400/500 is hilarious😂 Thats awesome you got your hands on a sampletrak eventually, and before the prices went past the 200 threshold. Glad you agree that 200 is the max its worth. I also checked out the video, thats a sick set up! Thanks the comment man, doing plenty more gear related stuff coming soon💪

@aq6304 This model does have a SmartMedia card slot though. As did the Boss SP-202 a year prior. And the Korg Electribes from the first half of the '00s. 1999 was when SD was actually introduced so "old" isn't really relevant, but it then took 5+ years to be adopted.

After marking the loop points, you can also get sample time back by using "optimize" feature. Loop the sample exactly how you want it, then hit "optimize" it will say "optimize sample xx?" Hit it again and now the sample is cut down and you'll notice you gain that time back if you press "capacity"

Today, I got st224 with around 30USD from my local store which resell used musical instruments imported from Japan. That is a steal price tag right? But my unit doesn't come with adapter and smartmedia card. Whatever i'm so happy with that price because this is my first standalone sampler, I'm normally use maschine for clients project and beat making for my self because i think ,hybrid system is more flexible for nowadays. I'm also used korg volca sample for jamming and finger drumming practice because volca sample and maudio trigger finger pad controller is perfect for outdoor . ST224 will be my next favourite instruments because of it's capabilities and flexibilities. I'd been only try a few hours with st224 but i already love with it. Believe it or not , this machine is so dope , if you use with external power supply and external audio source like the fm radio or smartphone whatever, this ST224 will be perform just like the perfect standalone lofi sampler for on the go.

Bro 30USD is more than a steal, thats an incredible price! I am extremely jealous haha You will probably pay around 25 USD for a smart media card and adapter combined, meaning it will still be cheap. My one didnt come with them either and that is roughly how much I paid. It sounds like you are very experienced with the Maschine and Korg Volca so the Sampletrak will probably be a great hardware sampler for you to start with. Also I have tried sampling using my smartphone but using the radio is a genius idea. I will definitely try that at some point! It's true the source pad will let you run an outside signal in which you can then use the effects... and not unlike how a big draw to the sp404 is the vinyl Sim, some of the effects on here are actually pretty sick, the time stretch, pitch shift, lo-pass among others are kinda sick. Like every instrument, it's got its sweet spots. @drew I wonder how you will feel about this box in 6 months. It took me a few months but right now it's my go-to to get started...the sequencer is...well, to be honest it's fucking useless, but I just love how it sounds at 12 bit /lofi 1

@@drewgrit_ The pads on mine are all good so far - in fairness I mostly just muck about working out stuff on the pads and then trigger the unit via a sequencer. Wrote a few very basic tunes on the unit just using the onboard sequencer etc ages ago, loads of fun working within the 4-note polyphony etc :) If your pads are getting worn out it might be that the contacts need cleaning, or more likely need topping up with conductive coating. Did this a few years ago with 2 old MMT-8 sequencers and the pads are great again - Chemtronics was the stuff I used and it did the biz, but there's others on the market :)

@@murmur8360"How is the sequencer?" Good question! I think the reason these were unpopular is because we for one didn't stock them at the time in our stores I was demoing gear for because we knew the sequencer wasn't brilliant. It's only 24ppqn resolution, which is a quarter of the MPC-60's resolution from 11 years earlier in 1988! 😂 And whilst low res is the Hip Hop sound on an MPC with its groove options (& thus why the default ppqn setting of 48 or whatever in FLStudio is liked by millenial 'boombap' heads, but is actually to save cpu! 🤦‍♂️😂), at 24 pulses per quarter note it's a bit low! We knew the fx might be alright because Zoom were doing guitar fx units prior. Boss & Roland had their line already & the SP-202 that came out the year before the Zoom SampleTrak was better. Roland were makers of early standalone sequencers & later sampler sequencer workstations too, so their sequencers were good. And Boss is a division of Roland.

@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@flyingscarf5863 This is actually really interesting that you’ve asked this because during the process of making the beat video that I’m working on I have been thinking about these things. I’d say yes it’s good for getting into the world of sampling, in terms of vintage samplers for sure. It’s very straightforward and has plenty of memory space. However, if performing is a goal that could be an issue, the pads are very unreliable. You could argue that it’s maybe just my unit, but I’m pretty confident in saying this will be an issue across any ST-224 you find. I don’t think it’s wear and tear, I think it’s low quality build. Therefore, if you got one it would probably be great up until you need to perform and then you might need to incorporate a second sampler like an SP404 or MPC into the workflow. Then you’d be be good. Essentially it’s up to you whether or not you want to try a Sampletrak and then add something or just go straight to an SP which should do it all with no problems. Anymore questions definitely let me know! Happy to answer anything my friend💪

Michael is right, you use the +/- buttons, the particular sample is showing up as starting at .55 because the last owner manipulated the sample to that end and it saved that way. If you change the tuning across any of the cents using the wheel, when you turn it on and off it will still be saved that way as far as where sample has been placed on the pad banks.

I got one years ago for around £100. I liked the FX but I wasn't keen on the workflow overall. I think several years ago it was worth picking one up because they were under the radar and you get them cheaply, but they aren't worth the second-hand prices that most people charge for them these days

No problem my friend, not a dumb question at all. So I use Jack cables out into a Tascam audio recorder, could also use an audio interface connected to a computer. And to get sounds in the machine I use the smart media card and reader which can be a sort of long process but you can also record right in with a jack cable. Ah nice one dude, 165 QUID is a good price and you’re so right about prices going up. I just hope that this video informs consumers enough that they don’t pay too much and that stabilises the prices in general but that could be wishful thinking haha I actually knew the es-1, sp202 and sp303 use smart media cards but felt like the better comparison was between 404 and sampletrak in terms of options with a bit more capability. And I totally know what you mean with the zombie thing haha with so much exposure to Sp vinyl sim type production it can sometimes feel a bit tainted or something, not quite sure how to describe it but I know what you mean! And I dont feel like its disrepectful either, some people are way to dependent on that one effect so its a fair statement if you ask me, there is clearly no malice in it either, its just your opinion at the end of the day. I had this sampler but I didn't enjoy it much. I basically used it as a guitar looper or as a easy way to trigger some vocal samples or some extra drums or guitar samples. I can't remember what I did with it, mostly I sold instruments and put the money towards getting a new instrument. I at some point got a wildly expensive EMU e5000 wich you can pick up today for around $200. You'll need a lot of 1.44 MB floppies though 😂 !!! For $50 the ZOOM is a fun toy but if you have to spend over $100. Get yourself a EMU s5000 instead... It has some of the most amazing reverb and echo/delay effects and other features to shape your sounds. I sold my hardware and switched to VST and DAW instead and selling the EMU I regret, it had a lot of character to it. The ZOOM you can emulate with the standard sampler instruments found in any modern DAW. Other hardware samplers of the 90's had some unique features and picking one up to use in your studio could be worth it. But most of these 90's low budget gimmicks will be as disappointing today as they were back then.

Appreciate you covering this sampler. There is still not a lot of hands on reviews of it all these years later. I understand your gripes, but to be fair its a budget sampler from 1999. I wouldn't expect it to have velocity sensitive pads or anything higher than smartmedia (which besides floppy and zip disk was standard for the time). KiofNC here on YT is a master with the machine. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ed95n8Wpldq9iIE.html, this is what ultimately got me to buy one back in 2012. Also, compared to a real SP, this unit is the closest I've heard to the real thing (I've tried a lot including Maschine, MPC X, Low Hiss Software and many others).

1. The Chord Scale can also be done manually by assigning the sample to more pads and then use tuning on each assigned pad to adjust desired “tune”. [Kinda similar method people did with SP404 before the MK2] 2. I saw your “First beat” video and it looks like you are using it like it was an Akai MPC, where you treat a “song” like a pattern/sequence part. Have you tried composing a full-length song of example 3 minutes and 30 seconds on one pad/song? [Which would be example around 75 bars of 90 BPM] [I guess this was how it was meant to be used from the designers/developer’s point of view] I´m wondering how the artist would arrange or incorporate a proper composing “work-flow” as I guess you cannot jump between the bars if I’m correct? 3. Concerning the velocity issue, did you try from an external controller?
@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ Жыл бұрын
Hey D R, thanks for the comment, ill reply in numbers like you did! 1. Yea that’s true, equally effective way to get some chords, I’ve done that a few times when I know the exact pitches I want but scale mode is fun when you don’t know what progression you want yet, that’s why I enjoy both. 2. Thanks for checking out the first beat too! I basically worked out that workflow because I thought it made the most sense for performing in a video, for me personally. And yea youre right, the way youre describing is the way it was designed but I just didn’t gel very well when I tried doing it that way. I probably didnt give it enough of a chance. In terms of arranging that way properly, I can’t actually remember the full ins and outs. All I remember is thinking it was ridiculous and working out my own way haha sorry I don’t have a better answer my friend 3. Yea external controllers are a possibility but for me having to connect it to another thing defeats the purpose of why I want it, I just wanted to play around with a little box, having fun with samples. To be completely honest the velocity thing doesn’t actually bother me anymore! Whenever you accept the sampletrak for what it is, you can settle in with it and just enjoy it for what it is. Hope that answers everything, I haven’t picked it up in a couple months due to being busy with other projects but your comment has made me eager to pick up the sampletrak haha thanks for that, I owe you one!

@decaystar 2. "treat a 'song' like a pattern/sequence".? 🤔 "3 minutes on one pad/song?". Not possible, even if there was more than a minute of sample time; he wasn't treating a song as a sequence in the other video but the other way around!; & you are conflating "pad/song" whilst those words are not interchangeable anyway as the usage of the foward slash implies. The recording of the pad play is in MIDI, not audio. That's why there is no need to do what you suggested.

I plan on just using the internal storage and one memory card and not being too precious about keeping stuff saved. I said under a different comment that my hope is everyone gets the opportunity to buy one at a good price, make some good music with it and pass it on for the same price when they are done with it. Funny you say that, on the last day of editing before posting this video I checked eBay in the UK to see if anything had changed from time of filming and there was 3 that were uploaded for about £300 so I watched the end of each auction in the days following the video release and none of them actually sold which is good but they were immediately re-uploaded for the same price, you might actually be looking at the same ones. People can ask whatever price they want but doesn’t mean much unless people buy it. So hopefully people ignore the overpriced ones and don’t bite the bait. And lol I feel you about the pads and midi man, its certainly lacking in those departments, its a real shame. Also I dont have an sp303 but would happily add one to my arsenal if they were a reasonable price. I have watched a lot of stuff about them and the common narrative seems to be that they are cool but very limited unless you combine them with another sampler like an MPC. I believe thats what J Dilla used to do too. Don’t know if you seen SPVIDZ before but he has a number of good videos on the sp303 that will probably answer a lot of questions you have about it. Here’s the links kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNOIjaiBnt2wp3U.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d86imbWlsLyZnXk.html Last thing is that the vinyl sim from the sp303 that everyone praises so much is now apparently on the new SP404 mkII, another great KZfaq Liam killen mentioned it in a video and seems to suggest this means the sp303 has less appeal now due to this and you are probably a better off buying the new mkII with far more features than an old overpriced sp303 with limited capability. I feel you my friend, everything in the music production world is up in price. I was looking at some overpriced tascam cassette players today and reminiscing on how they were a quarter of the price a few years ago. In an ideal world, it would be great if people paid less for the sampletrak and passed it on for the same price once they are done with it. Meaning that everyone could get to use it for a reasonable price! Thats the dream haha

It was considered almost a toy when it first came out . Zoom had just bust on the scene back in the late 90's. The zoom track wasn't bad but it wasn't what any serious beat maker wanted back then. I don't think you was able to trigger the samples with a midi keyboard and that's what turned people off about it.

Yea man I get what you are saying. I can definitely see how it could have been considered more toy like. Hey nobby thanks for the comment. I feel you I really do, I personally prefer the way you’re saying too but the internet has become so overstimulated that videos need to be engaging every 2 seconds or else the majority of people fast forward or worse, click off. It’s a bit of a nightmare honestly. I don’t know if you’re familiar with producer and KZfaqr Ricky Tinez but his content is great, he can just sit and talk for as long as he needs and it’s amazing. I definitely hope to build up to a point where I can do the same but it’s much harder when you haven’t built up a following yet. At the moment nobody knows me so playing this game of audience retention with fast paced editing and memes is just something I have to deal with and pray I balance it well. But yea I totally hear you and thanks for being one the one people concentrating on the video and actually giving it a chance. This is still very new to me so I really appreciate it!

So he bought a sampler/drum machine and didn't make a beat with it then did a video review... duh! ... this review gets a thumbs down from me.. also not fair comparing it to an SP404 which is newer and more modern piece of kit. Zoom 1999 and sp404 2005. 6years is massive difference in the music tech world.
@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback reggie, I am still early in this content creating game so comments are useful. Feel free to thumbs down, you have every right to do so. I feel what you are saying about the time between sp404 and Sampletrak but also we are in 2022 and they are two strong options for buying a sampler, so I don’t personally don’t see any issue with comparing them. Especially when they are in similar price range but I do get your point, that’s fair enough. In terms of not making a beat, I could have included that but it would have made an already long video even longer and like I mentioned I plan on making that a separate video. I chose to focus on the sound of the device rather than the beatmaking because that could be considered the most important bit for a lot of people. Not everyone of course but I hope you get what I mean. Like the SP1200 is appealing to most people in 2022 for its sound rather than its primitive workflow in most peoples cases. My main reason for buying it is running audio through it for its character so that is what I made my video about and as I said the velocity issue really damaged all motivation I had to make a beat. I have nothing but love for the Sampletrak, it may have looked like I was shooting it down but really I want it to stay a reasonable price so that everyone can have a chance at using it. Cheers for the conversation✌
@reggiegimmix9128
@reggiegimmix9128 2 жыл бұрын
@@drewgrit_ No problem.. It was a decent review... I just felt it lacked some more expanded insight into the good and bad of the device.... I just felt you didn't really get into the sample chopping and beat making side of it very much, but Is see where you are coming from. I agree not having velocity sensitive pads is a downside but I don't think velocity sensitive pads were even available on samplers and drum machines from around that period. As I said your points are valid. I think the big hype about this machine is the quick workflow for sample chopping and the sound you get from your beats compared to the expensive SP1200. Value wise it's a lot cheaper and gives a good account. Obviously when looking for bells and whistles and functions of todays devices then many people would think it's complete junk. I would say the biggest downside of the Sampletrak is the midi... or lack of it. It mentions in the manual but forget about using any form of midi on this. It's litteraly non-existent. So people really should be made aware of that major pitfall. You can trigger the machine to start stop from midi but forget about triggering individual pads etc,.. They pretty much added midi ports but didn't implement it at all. It's great for making up beats and tbh I rarely use the effects...they're fun but a bit too dirty and gritty for me, the other downside is the song mode... it's also pretty crap. So for me great for making beats an drum patterns but not full songs, very easy to use and chop samples and assign to pads but not a device for use in a full midi setup. Keep up the good work..
@drewgrit_
@drewgrit_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@reggiegimmix9128 That is really interesting that we are coming from it from different angles, like the effects for me is the main appeal, I love the dirt and grit of it, hence my name haha Thats fair about the midi too, I have heard people bash that before, its a real shame its not better. And in terms of exploring the full ins and out of the sampletrak, I think that would take a full hour long video and dont feel like people are willing to invest that time, especially since I am new on youtube. So I am going to explore as much as I can across maybe 6 vids on the sampletrak, thats the hope anyway and will keep the points you have mentioned in mind for those. Cheers dude✌
