I had the 15. Great little lens. I would recommend it to anyone who owns a MFT camera and likes the lenses like traditional 28 or 35. It's so small you almost feel like there is no lens on your camera! And the pictures it makes are great.

Great review as always! I'm starting to get into more wide photography. I have the Lumix G 25MM and it is great but I always feel like I needed something just a little bit wider and this totally helped me figure out which one I'm going to go with. Great set of lenses! I like the 14 and 20 on my Olympus cameras with IBIS, and I like the 12-32 with OIS on my Lumix GF (no IBIS) cameras.

Thanks for a nice review! I have all three lenses and like them very much. 15m F1.7 is extremely good and 20mm F1.7 is extremely versalite and compact. 14mm 2,5 is extremely compact, and can be used as a pocket camera together with GM1 body.

Hi Matti, thanks for another nice video! I wanted to try something slightly different, so I got Laowa 17 mm f1.8. It's still pretty compact and lightweight on my OM-D E-M10III. Manual focus only was quite a challenge for me, but results were a pleasant surprise soon :-) Anyway, still got an itch to try the Leica 15 mm f1.7, which I think is a great lens ;-)

Good overview, I just would like to add that the Leica 15mm is clearly better than its 17mm competitor from Olympus. Therefore I swapped it.This really a perfect prime lens! (Did you mention that the aperture ring does not work on Olympus cameras? However, that’s not a problem.) I do not like the 20mm so much as the 15mm, but it has one killer feature: it fits exactly in a side compartment of my photo backpack...

Very nice video. Just the one i needed. Just got into m43 and i want to invest in a prime lens. For approximately the same amount of money i could get the panny leice 15mm, or i could get both the 14mm and 20mm. What a wonderful world we're living in, so many options to choose from.

I own small 7.5, 12.0, and 15.0mm as compact wide lenses. For general use I keep the Leica 15.0 lens on the camera body. For “street” photos I tend to use the Laowa 7.5, and I have my 12,0 Rokinon on my desktop camera for online video.

I shoot EM10ii with mostly wide angle and ultra wide angle lenses for street (day and night), events (in and out doors), environmental portraits, and arcitecture (in and out doors). I own and love the Pan 15mm F1.7, 20mm F1.7 12-32mm F3.5-5.6; Oly 9-18mm F4-5.6, 12mm F2, 17mm F1.8, 25mm F1.8, 25mm F1.8; and Venus Laowa 7.5 mm F2 and 9mm F2.8. I love all those lenses very much. My favorites (in order starting with most used) are Pan 12-32mm F3.5-5.6, Oly 9-18mm F4-5.6, Venus Laowa 9mm F2.8, Oly 12mm F2, Oly 17mm F1.8, Pan 20mm F1.7. I occasionally use Oly 25mm F1.8. I also own longer lenses from 45 to 150 mm, but never use them professionally, though I do sometimes use long lenses for my enthusiast hobby of wildlife photos. I also own Oly 12-45mm F4 Pro and Sigma 30mm F1.4, which are reputedly excellent lenses. I haven't yet had the opportunity to use them. As an enthusiast, I want to get the reputedly excellent Sigma 56mm F1.4, but I don't have any pro subjects that need that focal length. For all Pan M43 camera users, I recommend all the above Pan, Laowa, and Rokinon-Samyang lenses. I also recommend the Pan-Leica 12mm F1.4 if you have tons of money, otherwise the excellent and affordable manual focus Rokinon 12mm F2.8 (USA) or Samyang 12mm F2.8 (outside USA) with give comparable photo quality at a fraction of the cost. The only possible downside of Rokinon/Samyang is it's a manual lens, but that's not a problem at 12mm with it's excellent distance scale and zone focusing scale printed on lens. Pan, Pan-Leica, Oly, Venus Laowa, and Rokinon-Samyang all make very good lenses, but I am reluctant to recommend Oly lenses to Pan camera owners because I don't know if Oly lenses have good auto focus on Pan bodies that use Depth of Defocus. Perhaps Mr Sulanto can answer this? Have you tested this? Can GX9 accurately and quickly auto focus Oly and Sigma lenses? Please test and review this. I would like to know because if the GX9 can properly auto focus my Oly and Sigma lenses, then I can upgrade from EM10ii to GX9 body. I don't want to upgrade to any more Oly bodies because Oly bodies have inferior video to Pan and Fuji. Oly bodies (older and new models) have problems adjusting video auto exposure, and have poor built-in mic (Pan and Fuji built-in mic is reputedly better), and although the EM5iii has an external mic jack, it has (reputedly) a problem with audio hiss when using external mic. Two different reviewers reported this and said Panasonic GX80/85, GX9, G9 and all Pan and Fuji have better built-in mic. Fuji is also good about providing an external mic jack in enthusiast cameras like XT30. Unfortuneately Fuji hasn't yet figured out ISIS as well as Oly and Pan. So the GX9 is my best upgrade option, if it's DFD auto focus will work well with my Oly non-pro lenses, my Oly 12-40 Pro lens, and Sigma 30 and 56 mm F1.4 lenses. Otherwise maybe LX100ii and live with it's one good lens. I will never buy an Oly body again. Oly has crippled to many features in EM10iv (especially related to exposure bracketing), and they haven't worked out EM5iii video bugs with auto exposure and internal and external mic hiss. Even if Oly eventually fixes the EM5iii video problems, it will still have a fully articulated screen, which I don't like for still photos or video for my subject matters and shooting style. I want the best semi compact rangefinder style camera that I can get for jpg stills and 1080 video that has viewfinder, flip down or up screen on back (like EM10ii, EM10iv, or GX9), and has full features for exposure bracketing, and has functioning exposure comp dial when using Manual mode for stills. I either want a compact rangefinder style pro camera for stills and video, or a good non crippled enthusiast camera, with those features. I want a good prosumer range finder style M43 camera. Preferably with interchangeable lens capability. The GX9 would be almost ideal if it had an external mic jack, but even without that it's still the best I can find and good enough if its DFD auto focus will work well with my Oly and Sigma lenses. If the GX9 won't work well with my Oly and Sigma lenses, then I'll either get LX100ii or buy nothing and just use my smart phone for video. The best smart phones have better video specs and better built-in mic than most cameras. The way camera makers can compete and beat smart phones for video is to always provide an external mic jack in every camera that can record video. Only then are cameras offering better video sound than phones.

I recently bought Laowa 7,5mm 2.0 and it's absolutely unrivalled when it comes to wide FOV. And it's not fisheye!

Your review is so well made and unbiased (which is good) but I feel a little bit confused regarding my choice. For now I own only the kit lenses for gx9 and as my first adittion I am considering either the lumix 20mm 1.7 or 14mm 2.5. Eventually I am gonna get both but if you have to go with one for: Low light street photography, and astrography with which one you will go? (For bright lighting conditions I am satisfied with my kit lenses, they are covering the range). Many thanks!

P20 is the sweetspot for m43 imo, 40mm fov is so versatile

The image circle diameter of MFT 4/3 sensor is 21.6mm or 22.5mm depending on how you measure it. This makes the 20mm a 'standard' lens on MFT. Image circle diameter on 36x24 full frame is 43.3mm making a 45mm lens 'standard' (although a 50 is normally used for a more pleasing look). Likewise any 20mm to 25mm lens on MFT is a 'standard'. The Pan 20mm is a lens that can be left on the camera, a handy, compact, standard lens. It is so nice we have two of them, although I'm not sure how that happened. If we delve into its exif we find it is a Leica but not billed as such. It is one of Panasonic's earliest lenses but does explain why it is tack sharp. Going off topic but keeping with compact there is also the GX PZ14-42 pancake zoom. It is an older lens now but far better than the Olympus EZ version. It can be fitted with an automatic lens cap which makes it very handy on one of the smaller MFT backs. It's not as fast but if you're stopping down to f/8 to cut the light anyway ...

Owned all of these lenses including 12-32. The 15 1.7 is pure diamond among them, other ones have drawbacks and compromises. 20 1.7 appeared to me not as good in bad light as 15 1.7, despite same aperture.

I have owned all 3 lenses: The 14mm was disappointing for me in terms of sharpness, the 15mm had too much purple fringing, the 20mm was the best and that's the one I have kept. The only downside to the 20mm is the focus isn't as good as the 15mm, but it's not that bad either (acceptable).

Love the 15mm 1.7

I'm having the oportunitty to try the 15mm this week and i'm very impressed. Great overall lens, i just can't understand why it is not stabilized... maybe version 2. I also owned the 20mm and i think i prefer the 15mm, faster AF (specially for video) and a more pleasant focal lenght for my use.

Panasonic lenses are easy to fall in love with. And when you love your lens, it doesn't matter if it is the best possible. Your connection with the lens just lets you take better pictures.

I find that my 20mm f/1.7 II should be shot at f/2.0 for best sharpness. My 14mm f/2.5 can be shot wide open without too much loss of contrast.

For my full-frame camera, I like to carry the following wide-angle, normal, telephoto 3-lens combo: 24 or 28mm wide-angle 40, 45, or 50mm normal 85, 90, or 100mm telephoto For my micro 4/3 camera, I like to carry the following 3-lens combo: Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 (46mm filter) Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 (46mm filter) Olympus 45mm f/1.8 (35mm filter)

Thank you for the insight! I have had a few questions about the lumix cameras in terms of the post-processing. GX85, for example. does not offer a LOG profile to record in. Given that, how can I best color grade properly? Can you still apply LUTs after? EDIT: And yes I'm aware of the "hack" available to put LOG on it. I prefer not to do that.

Glad to see the mention the Olympus options. I know you're an ambassador, but the Oly 17 2.8 would be a more interesting inclusion than the Pan 15 1.7 because if seems much more pancake like to me (although having seen this video the the Leica looks a lot smaller than I thought it was). Plus the 14/17/20 gives a more interesting spread of focal lengths than 14/15/20. Better still would be to have not only them three but also include both the Pan 15 1.7 and Oly 17 1.8 (both of which seem quasi pancake but not quite short/flat enough to be actual pancakes, if that makes sense???), but that's being greedy! I received the Pan 20 1.7 and also the 12-32 zoom with my GX7. Both are amazing and are perfect with that body. But I want a prime just a little wider, so want to get the Oly 17 1.8 and/or Pan 15 1.7 at some point... 😊

Hi, Matti, I want the Leica 15 mm badly, but since it is relatively pricey, I will probably end up with a 14mm/2.5 or even keep fooling around with my old trusted "nifty-fifty" called 25mm/1.7, which is great as well...

I recently got a Lumix G9 and discovered the digital 2x zoom option that does not impact image quality - I mapped the zoom control to a back button and now wider angle lenses even more useful in more situations.

I have all of these lenses. The one I like the most is the 15mm. I think 28/30mm equivalent is my prefered focal lenght. But 28 is starting to feel too wide at times. And 35 already feels too narrow to me in most situations. I'm rambling. Of the lenses shown in the video, I like the 15. But it takes from the pocketability of my gx85. So unless I know I'll have the camera in my hand all the time, I use the 14. I like the results the 20 gives me, but I use it more for enviromental portraits or if I'm going to plases that are really open like a beach or a country field. I don't like the 20mm for street photography because the AF is too slow and the field of view is already too closed to easily use zone focusing. And I like 28mm for street anyway. The 12-32 is a great lens. But since I started shooting primes, zoom lenses became awckward to me. And most times I want anything longer than 20mm, I'm also looking for a shallow depth of field the 12-32 can't offer me. Anyway. I love the 15. But if I was forced to keep only one of these lenses it would be the 14. I went to MFT for its compactness in first place. But maybe I would keep that 15.... I don't know. I keep on rambling.

(on an Olympus which is due for an upgrade) The Leica Summilux 15mm is very attractive and could well be the choice for the next prime. I stared the 20mm Mk1 when I got the GF1 I later got the 15mm I mainly use the 15 mm these days but will keep my 20mm mainly for low resell value. I don't think I wouldnow get the 14mm as prefer the others being faster and not that much bigger.

In my time (early 80’s) the best wide angle was considered 18mm. That would be 9mm or 12mm on 4/3 or ASPC formats.

I have 15mm and I'm using it on gimbal.. Sometimes it's not wide enough... Although it is good lens... My second lens is Sigma 18-35 with viltrox, Sigma is a little bit sharper than 15mm leica on the same focal lenght..

So, I'm an amateur when it comes to photography. And I'm looking for camera lenses reviews because my 12-35mm f 3.5 don't let me take photos and video on low light conditions the way I would like. But I was wondering; what would be the reasons I could have to also be looking for buying a "better" camera body? Right now I'm using a Lumix GM1, I really like how small that camera is, but besides the fact that you can not attached an external flash light and/or external microphone, I would like to read some opinions.

From my film years, 35 mm was too long, 28 like allrouder, 24 mm sometimes better. 20 used to be too short. Even today, with MFT I mostly find that focal distance used is in the 12-16 mm range. But there isn't such thing like too short focal distance :P especially if the lens is rectilinear. Matti, are here some tilt/shift lenses for MFT? I have one for my Pentax, it is older manual focus lens, heavily using it for architecture documentaries but now, most probably leaving Pentax, I am in a search for substitute.

Actually there's one zoom lens that has the same aperture, f1.7 and a wider angle than those: The 10-25mm but it's very big and expensive...

Question is the 25mm a manual or autofocus lense and how do you get it to be focused?

The term "standard lens" is not a best term. 25/50 mm belongs to the "normal" category; it is slightly longer than the exactly normal lens in respect to the 35 mm format. Many manufacturers (not all) chose the 25mm focal length for less optical distortion and for more pleasing portrait photos of one or two people. It is also possible that they were the cheapest lenses to make.

Thanks for the video. It helped me with a decision. I wasn't sure whether to get the Panasonic 14mm F2.5 or the 20mm F1.7. The difference would have been just €50. I was looking for a lens that I could use on my Olympus PEN camera for outdoor and street photography for the daily quick shot. I've now decided to go with the 14mm lens, as it's a wider angle that better suits what I want to do with it.

There is also very good Sigma 19 mm F2,8 Art. Small, light, cheap with excellent performance.

Sharpness is a must a lens has to provide! Otherwise you can use canvas and brush.
