Inline, Susan Bates still is my forever love. I bought the aluminium and used a clay /cook in oven for my hands. I still love them. But I will try anything.

I’m a knife holder…I use metal for cotton yarns, I grab one of the Odyssey hooks, the most…and I like wood and resin, for most other yarns…I’m a tapered woman, but I love my Furls crochet hooks…I love Tunisian crochet and I bought the Addi set, which is tapered. I did buy me a wooden one, also, since my set didn’t come in a size, 6.5 mm hook. And I am a tight crocheter…so I usually go up, one mm hook size.

I am a knife holder in crochet. I love the Furl's Odyssey hooks, but, they are very expensive. (I only have one) I also have a wooden Furl's hook which I really don't care for. My all time favorite is the Clover Amore hooks. Now, those I have in every size! Thank you for this tutorial I learned a lot!

I learned t crochet at age 4. I’m now 66. I use the pencil grip. I have used the knife hold with really bulky yarns. I like Clover Amore hooks, and prefer flatter heads.

I am a pencil holder. I only like the tapered Boye hooks. I like to make Tunisian crochet with long hooks and I scored a set of plastic Tunisian hooks with long tails for $0.50 each it was fabulous 😀

I use to hold my hook in the pencil grip, now I use the knife grip. I find it easier to keep my tension consistent when I use the knife grip. I have never tried the mixture of both hooks. I have used both of them, I am more of a Susan Bates girl especially the plastic ones for some reason. Oh and I also love the Clover Amour hooks! They just glide through the yarn. I definitely would love to get a Furls crochet hook! Great video! Thank you! I love your videos!

I can crochet using both methods, but the knife hold, if you watch closely, tends to enlarge the loops due to the “maneuvering” of the wrist… at least for me. And I find it easier to “catch up” on my tension using the pencil method. Love your channel, love what you share with us!!! Thank you, Nikki ❤️😃

Nikki, I’m a knife holder. I think that I’m going to try the combination. I have used both of the others and don’t have a preference….depends on the yarn. I have basically looked at you on U Tube, but I went to your site the other day and you have some great info, etc. so I will be visiting regularly. Also will look into the Tunisian hook with the extension. Thanks for all the info.

i recently got my 8 piece odyssey hook set and i adore them!! they are by far the best ones i have ever tried and i will never go back :) i love the individual styled hook head combination of inlined and tapered ones that the furls have and i like how heavy and chunky they are because i had thr exact samw issue like you that other hooks often poke my hand wich can be very painful after a while. now i can crochet for hours and hours without any issues ☺️

I love my Tulip Etimo hooks that I got for Christmas quite a few years ago. They work the best for me. I would love to try a Furls hook someday. I just started learning Tunisian crochet and really like it a lot. I am using hand me down old metal Tunisian hooks until I really decide if it's something I am going to do often enough to warrant buying really nice Tunisian hooks or even an interchangeable set. I've seen some pretty nice Tunisian hooks out there that are quite expensive too, but if I doing it enough it may be another item to add to a future Christmas list as well as the Furls crochet hooks. I hold my crochet hooks like a knife. It's weird how some crochet hooks are long and some are short. I find the longer ones more comfortable in my hands & definitely like the ones with the ergo handles better. I find the metal hooks that have no ergo handles hurt my hands after a short while, so I only use those for backups when needed.

I taught myself how to crochet back when I was 18 in the 1960s. I’m also left handed and there was no one to teach me. And back in those days there was no KZfaq to learn from. All the learn-how-to books showed the pencil hold and the only kind of hooks we could get back then were aluminum!!

I learned using the knife hold, years ago. I just picked up crochet again now and after making my first piece i realized the joint of my thumb was bothering me-and i've never had a problem with it before! Something with the knife hold was not good for my hands, probably my own fault with my grip. I'm now slowly getting into the habit of pencil hold, though i'll still use knife for more difficult/intricate stitches!

I started out holding it like a pencil. No one taught me how to hold the hook. Then I saw on KZfaq the knife hold and that made it so much easier for me. I like all different hooks depending on the yarn and stitch. But I slpit my yarn with my inline so I never use it.

I prefer an online hook with an ergonomic grip. The pointed head is essential for me as I tend to use thinner yarns (DK or less). The tapered head feels chunky to me.

I've been using the Boye hooks for years. Recently started using the Clover Amour hooks, after comparing it to the Tulip Etimo and Susan Bates hooks. I found that I really preferred the clover. It's a bit longer than the Etimo and a little cheaper too. I'm also a fan of the rounded back of the ergonomic handle, which the Tulip Etimo does not have. Now in the process of upgrading my hooks to the Clover. I really want to try the Furls Odyssey hooks, but they are too expensive. For my cheaper yarns I still love my trusty Boye hooks. I found that I am not really a fan of the inline hooks. I'm not use to them and I always end up splitting my yarn or dropping stitches. I'm a knife holder, and find that the Bates hooks, especially the ergonomic ones, are way too long and slows me down. In my opinion, feel the Bates hooks are cheaply made compared to the Boye hooks, because the Bates hook I purchased chipped after just two hours of crocheting. So I love my Boye and Clover hooks.

I have very small hands..child sizes.. I prefer Inline hooks..,Susan Bates… I love my Clovers Amour hooks, and my Tulios. I also like Knut Pick’s beautiful laminated wood hooks… I have four Furls Odysseys… And.. I am comfortable with simple metal hooks…no handles. I used plain Susan Bates hooks for years, and resisted the ergonomic ones… I;m OK with Bith now. BEGINNERS. Invest in a couple og good hookd…Your experience will be much better… …

I bought the clovers and like them but I feel their throats are not deep enough. If only I could grind a little depth out. Are the Tulip or Odyssey deeper throated? I hate to keep buying hooks. 😩

I use neither holds. Hold your hook and yarn how you want and what is comfortable to you. Knife and pencil are not the only ways to hold. I prefer ergonomic metal. No preference on the throat.

Some useful info, thank you. But...your hook descriptions are inaccurate 😬. With 'inline' crochet hooks the head is pointed, the head, throat and shaft are all of the same diameter or 'in line'. With 'Tapered' crochet hooks the hook is taller than the shaft when viewed from the side. The head is blunt and as wide as the shaft but the throat is narrow at the head or 'tapered' when viewed from above.
