My plots are looking great. Again, we suffer the same mid to late August heat and dry spell so I’m glad I stuck to my norm and planted early August when we have plenty of rain. Really hoping for a pop up shower or 2 this week to combat the high 90 temps.

I'm finding my chicory is absolutely worthless. Turnips and radish seem to work really well for me. I'm noticing my clover is hit all year long. I'm going to just grow exactly what you suggest because everything I've done based on your recommendations has worked very well.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Well I appreciate that Mike! Chicory is a great addition with the clover as it keeps the clover more lush during the drought. It's typically the last thing eaten but does serve a purpose in a mix. Terrible stand alone plot in most areas ...

Hey Jeff, questions for western PA plots. I have a barrasica blend already planted on August 5th, usually wait until mid September to throw the rye down to fill in spots and add more tonnage, I want to add tillage radish, would you suggest add those in now or more towards September 1st? Because you can add tillage radish a little later because it germinates quickly right?

How much area do you need to compliment your greens with corn? We have 50 acres with about 6 acres of greens in multiple .5 acre-2 acre plots. Mixed ag, Western Illinois, moderate to high deer density.

That's a tough one! I've always wondered what a light discing would do but have never done so. One strategy is to give them extra fertilizer...as well as up to 100#s of Urea per acre right before a good rain

Everything that is beans this year is going to be alfalfa next summer. Would you expect this to have any impact on the number of mature bucks seen? The number of mature bucks seen in the past three years keeps dwindling, and it is not because they are killed. I have no idea what has changed but it has been disappointing.
@brodycampbell2990
@brodycampbell2990 11 ай бұрын
I guess I’m confused with you stating not to have summer food in a deep wood section but then stated you need to develop a pattern of use so they know there is food there
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 11 ай бұрын
You never want enough Summer food to raise herd numbers. A simple pass thru hunting plot works exceptional but is too small to raise herd numbers during the Summer months. However, mature bucks wander during the Summer...even get bumped when other surrounding hunters are going into the woods. When they do that and you have a little hunting plot planted in clover they find it and come back for more in the Fall because you safely established a pattern of use 😉
@brodycampbell2990
@brodycampbell2990 11 ай бұрын
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 that makes sense. We’ve been controlling our intrusions on our 1/4 acre plot this year and so far we’ve been noticing a increase of daytime activity compared to last year. Keeping pressure down to as close to 0 as possible has increased our daytime picture count of deer. We planted brassica seed first weekend of this month and it’s been growing great. We also have a crossing strip planted in chicory that’s from clear cut to our plot.
