And if you invest another roughly $300USD, you can buy the Synology 10Gbe network adapter and a desktop Thunderbolt to 10Gbe powered adapter and have a dedicated 10Gbe connection between the MacBook and the Synology NAS and have Zero speed lag compared to a USB connect SSD. I get transfer speeds around 1.1 to 1.2 GB/s using this setup, with sustained Read and Write speeds around 1.1GB/s Read and 970MB/s Write.

@@xville8642 Maybe. He has a RAID 0 so it reads from either one of two disks. That can offer read speed close to 2x a single disk if the file is stored on both disks. I have 4 disk units and SHR1 and so don't have the 2 disk speed data handy. If he configured RAID 1, he would lose half his disk storage space (each disk has all data), but his read speeds would nearly double as he could read from either of two spinning disks.

Shouldn't the NVMe solid state drives be Synology brand? Are these required?

I'm looking to get the same nas but seeing the RW speeds of 102 MB/s ... ? Is that the max that those Seagate drives can put ?

How is the performance without the solid state drives? Could they be added later? Coukd I just install one?

Yes. I will likely upgrade to solid-state drives to increase performance substantially.

What if one of HDDs simply dies in the middle of your project? All is gone in a second. I would always sacrifice portion of capacity for the safety. That’s why having 4 bay unit makes more sense to me. Anyway great video 😊👍

Certainly, but very unlikely to happen in the middle of a project. This NAS syncs to a much larger NAS continuously so if drives in the two bay failed I have a backup.
