Introduction
Digital pianos under $1,000 are the most popular category of these instruments. Welcome to our fresh 2024 round-up of the best digital pianos under $1,000.
Most parents or beginner players want to stay in the $500 to $1,000 price range until they know that the piano will be a part of their life. In the last few years, there have been better actions, lighter instruments, and improved piano sounds.
While there are many instruments in the $200 to $400 range from manufacturers like Casio, Alesis, or Donner, today’s list will only cover 88-key, weighted-action instruments.
Casio
CDP-S360
At 24 lbs., this instrument is very lightweight and loaded with features; including hundreds of onboard sounds, auto-accompaniment features, and recording options. The CDP-S360 can also be battery operated. This keyboard is fun to play on your own, or take to a party or jam session.
By keeping the previous generation of action and a lower grade tone generator, Casio has kept the price very accessible at USD599.
PX-S1100
With a similar weight and form factor to the CDP-S360, but with updated styling including multiple colour options, rear-facing speakers, a dramatic improvement to the piano sound, and an updated action, the PX-S1100 comes in at USD699. Although it has fewer onboard sounds and no auto-accompaniment option, this is a great choice for people who are focused on the piano playing experience.
Kawai
ES120
The ES120 includes Kawai’s newly improved Responsive Hammer Compact keyboard action; one of the quietest in the marketplace. It also features Bluetooth Audio and MIDI, updated styling, and one of the highest fidelity stereo sampled piano tones in this price category. As well, it has the greatest number of onboard high quality acoustic piano tones including a great sample of a Kawai K-60 upright.
For people with a little more to spend who are mostly concerned with the piano playing experience, at USD949 the ES120 delivers a stunning value.
Korg B2
Often compared to the D1, the B2 has onboard speakers making the D1 more of a stage instrument while the B2 is more appropriate for this list.
Like the Kawai ES120, the focus is on the quality of the piano samples, which are played through speakers totalling 30 Watts; one of the largest in the category. The action is less advanced than the Kawai or Roland options, but in line with the Casio CDP-S360.
The B2 includes a triple pedal and stand, and at USD649, it’s a great deal.
Roland
FP-30X
With the FP-30X only being $100 to $200 dollars more than the FP-10, the improved tone generator, speaker volume and quality, onboard sounds, and connectivity options make it the obvious choice.
The PHA-4 action has escapement and a triple sensor, the only action in this category to offer both. The speakers are punchy and full, and the instrument includes a USB Audio interface as well as Bluetooth Audio and MIDI.
Yamaha
DGX-670
At USD849, this instrument is a fantastic option for people who want a large variety of onboard sounds and want to try composition and live arranging. It’s a great comparison to the Casio CDP-S360. Although the Korg is more expensive, it has a colour display along with a multitude of additional features and controls.
The DGX-670 is physically the largest instrument on this list. While it’s technically portable, it doesn’t lend itself to being moved around on a daily basis. For people who can set this up at home and dive into the vast array of features, it’s a lot of fun.

Hey Stu, thanks for your very helpful content. I'm intending to buy my first digital piano this week so would love some more insight. Locally here in NZ, my options for a triple pedal console are limited and the options I'm looking at are the Kawai ES120 (1899 NZD) & the Casio PX-770 (1699 NZD). I will have the opportunity to trial both in store, however I'd love to hear your personal thoughts on the actions of these two when compared to an acoustic and what sound you preferred. Overall the best value for money, why would you choose one over the other? Cheers!

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! That is very exciting! Thank you for tuning into our channel and writing in with your question. While both of these models are excellent pianos with great cost-to-value ratios. I would personally give an edge to the ES120 in terms of tone/touch authenticity. It is a slightly heavier action and warmer tone, which is more comparable to an acoustic piano. Thanks again and hope this helps! :)

Hi, what digital piano would you recommend for a budget of around $1200? I am an intermediate player who trained with an upright; I will be using the piano for live, online music streams, sometimes at night when I may need to use headphones for the neighbors. I do not need special features and will mostly be playing classical music. My biggest priorities are the speaker sound for playing in front of friends, realistic key feel so my technique is maintained, and output sound for online streams. Thank you so much for your assistance, your videos have been so helpful! :) If you think a piano out of my budget is necessary for these scenarios, please recommend it as well

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks so much for reaching out with your question. Are you in Canada or the United States? The price points we are talking about would be a bit different in that case. However, I would say that models like the Roland FP30X, FP60X, and FP-E50 are likely going to be the best options for what you are seeking. If you exclusively need a solid piano sound and are not concerned about arranger/accompaniment functions, the FP60X has a very impressive speaker system and all of the connectivity options that you require. If you do require accompaniment functionality, the FP-E50 is certainly worth consideration. However, the speaker system is not as loud as the FP60X. Thanks so much and hope this helps! :)

Hello Merriam music I had a question as a total beginner with digital pianos, I wanted to know what is the cheapest digital piano with 88 keys because honestly I do not care about the sound the piano makes (do care about how the keys feel and the quality so it won’t break in a few months but will last me a very long time even with extensive use). I learned that you can hook up your piano via a usb to your software and that way I could use a “grand piano” and since I will be playing to learn I’d prefer headset over traditional sound coming from the piano, is there any piano that suits my needs and won’t cost me €445 euro? I have been looking at the Roland 10 and the Yamaha P145 B but it’s just to much, I kinda want to bypass the need for a piano that will cost that much when I can just hook it up to a software and get a better experience (I am still unfamiliar with the process of hooking it up to a software so please help me out). All I care about is 88 keys a great headset audio output, feeling of the keys don’t need to be exactly like a grand piano neither plastic just something you could use if you get me 😊 I love the piano animenz uses on KZfaq in which he plays anime themed songs, it’s a Steinway piano of course buying a similar piano like that will cost you a lot of money but I’d thought if I can just replicate that sound with a headset and the feeling of the keys are just fine and the overall is above decent or good I would be happy 😃 Appreciate the advice thanks!!

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the suggestion! It is important to note that there are some 88-note non-weighted keyboards and that some of them do not have USB/MIDI connection to be able to partner them with virtual instruments and apps. To that point, my top suggestion would be the Roland FP10. It has one of the most authentic feeling actions in the price point and also provides the USB connectivity you are looking for! :)

My doubt lies between purchasing the Casio PX-S1100 or the Roland FP-30X. I require a digital piano with an action similar to that of a real piano to train my pianist technique, but at the same time, I need one that I can use for recording in my DAW. I'd also like to add that I would need it for live performances, but my main focus is for daily practice in the studio. To be honest, I like the design (Red Color) of the Casio PX-S1100, and I feel its sound is fuller and not as bright as the Roland's. However, I don't have the opportunity to play them live; I can only rely on KZfaq videos for comparison. Therefore, I would appreciate guidance on whether the Casio PX-S1100 meets my requirements or if I should consider the FP-30X, especially considering that in my country, the price difference is only $30, with the Roland FP-30X being the more expensive option.

Hi! Brent here! The decision and preference comes down to the tastes of the player ultimately. In my opinion, the FP30X has a more authentic feeling action. It is substantially heavier and has escapement simulation, whereas the PXS1100 is quite light. The sensor system is also more advanced in the FP30X. If you're looking for a playing experience that is as close as possible to an acoustic piano, I would personally give the FP30X the edge. With that said, if you're looking for portability, the PXS1100 is an excellent gigging instrument.

What happened to the Roland FP E50 it only cost me $800 850 dollars

In Canada, the FP-E50 is at a higher price point (above the $1000 mark). It still holds up as an amazing piano for its price though! :)

We didn't forget the Yamaha P225. It is a solid piano of course, but we feel that there are instruments that offer better cost-to-value ratios than that particular model.

So the Yamaha P-225 did not make the cut?

It is a solid piano, but, in our collective opinion, there are better offerings in the price category. It is important to note that piano preference will always come down to subjectivity though.

I had P-125 before and now I have DGX-670. Price is almost the same, but DGX-670 has more sounds (hundreds of sounds) and has better speakers. I tried P-225 in store. I think it is almost the same as P-125. For me P-125 only had 2 or 3 usable sounds.

Thanks for another useful video, but how come you NEVER talk about Korg?!? Any specific reason!?

You're welcome! We are not Korg dealers, so we have a tough time tackling their pianos for review/comparison videos.
