Introduction
Digital pianos under $1,000 are the most popular category of these instruments. Welcome to our fresh 2024 round-up of the best digital pianos under $1,000.
Most parents or beginner players want to stay in the $500 to $1,000 price range until they know that the piano will be a part of their life. In the last few years, there have been better actions, lighter instruments, and improved piano sounds.
While there are many instruments in the $200 to $400 range from manufacturers like Casio, Alesis, or Donner, today’s list will only cover 88-key, weighted-action instruments.
Casio
CDP-S360
At 24 lbs., this instrument is very lightweight and loaded with features; including hundreds of onboard sounds, auto-accompaniment features, and recording options. The CDP-S360 can also be battery operated. This keyboard is fun to play on your own, or take to a party or jam session.
By keeping the previous generation of action and a lower grade tone generator, Casio has kept the price very accessible at USD599.
PX-S1100
With a similar weight and form factor to the CDP-S360, but with updated styling including multiple colour options, rear-facing speakers, a dramatic improvement to the piano sound, and an updated action, the PX-S1100 comes in at USD699. Although it has fewer onboard sounds and no auto-accompaniment option, this is a great choice for people who are focused on the piano playing experience.
Kawai
ES120
The ES120 includes Kawai’s newly improved Responsive Hammer Compact keyboard action; one of the quietest in the marketplace. It also features Bluetooth Audio and MIDI, updated styling, and one of the highest fidelity stereo sampled piano tones in this price category. As well, it has the greatest number of onboard high quality acoustic piano tones including a great sample of a Kawai K-60 upright.
For people with a little more to spend who are mostly concerned with the piano playing experience, at USD949 the ES120 delivers a stunning value.
Korg B2
Often compared to the D1, the B2 has onboard speakers making the D1 more of a stage instrument while the B2 is more appropriate for this list.
Like the Kawai ES120, the focus is on the quality of the piano samples, which are played through speakers totalling 30 Watts; one of the largest in the category. The action is less advanced than the Kawai or Roland options, but in line with the Casio CDP-S360.
The B2 includes a triple pedal and stand, and at USD649, it’s a great deal.
Roland
FP-30X
With the FP-30X only being $100 to $200 dollars more than the FP-10, the improved tone generator, speaker volume and quality, onboard sounds, and connectivity options make it the obvious choice.
The PHA-4 action has escapement and a triple sensor, the only action in this category to offer both. The speakers are punchy and full, and the instrument includes a USB Audio interface as well as Bluetooth Audio and MIDI.
Yamaha
DGX-670
At USD849, this instrument is a fantastic option for people who want a large variety of onboard sounds and want to try composition and live arranging. It’s a great comparison to the Casio CDP-S360. Although the Korg is more expensive, it has a colour display along with a multitude of additional features and controls.
The DGX-670 is physically the largest instrument on this list. While it’s technically portable, it doesn’t lend itself to being moved around on a daily basis. For people who can set this up at home and dive into the vast array of features, it’s a lot of fun.
