This makes too much sense. Thank you! I have your red Fretboard Theory book and it's really opening up the fretboard for me. It's a REALLY good book. It's my guitar bible and my guitar teacher. I love it.

I'm a guitar teacher, and was looking for videos for a teen student who wants to learn to play by ear. I learned to identify intervals (on the piano) when I was very young (just 3 when I started), and that seemed like the best place to start, for a student who doesn't just play by ear naturally, the way I did. But I kind of agree with you here, it's more important/useful to know how to play what you hear than to name the intervals and notes. (On the other hand, it's very helpful to be able to name the notes and intervals when trying to tell a bandmate what to play!) Learning a lot of riffs and solos that use a particular scale (like minor pentatonic), or specific chord progressions that come up in lots of songs is a very good idea. But I want to give her something to practice between lessons, that will help her start playing by ear. Any short-term suggestions besides "learn lots of solos"?

I usually have my students try to figure out simple songs or song parts by ear. I give them a head start by telling them the key or scale.

I actually without a doubt agree on everything because I’m self taught and by playing at my church and at home without tabs or chords for the most part have developed my ear pretty good. And in my head once I hear one song I can put another song similar to it, all I have done after is change the chords that fit me but follow the CHORD NUMBER SYSTEM. Thanks Dessi, awesome video

Theory like the number system is very helpful. Knowing where to look is half the battle.

Desi Serna Guitar 👍👍👍👍 I have been a follower since your early days Desi. I have most (if not all) your podcasts. I learned alot from them. Now I can easily say that I can play along any worship team at my church. and transposing songs is easier for me to do now just by following the NASHVILLE NUMBER SYSTEM. Btw I remember a video where you had a RED PRS guitar. You motivated me to get one hahaha. Now I got one lol thanks!!!!

That’s right! Specifically, play the song "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil which was on the charts in 1988.

@@desisernaguitar - Thanks for the recommendation. I'm hoping to get some good car care tips from that song. On a side note, for the beginner player looking for an amp, I would recommend the Boss Katana 50 MkI. It's able to dial in pretty much any tone you want without having to spend a lot on pedals, as the effects are built in and fully accessible with a computer. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for all you do!

@@CptCoitus The Katana is a great amp. I recommend the Katana Air or Katana Mini for a practice amp. They're perfect for playing at bedroom levels.

There are three types of “hearing”. (1) Perfect pitch - which generally is rare and must be developed when very young. Can’t be developed as an adult. With perfect pitch, you can name every note instantly. (2) Relative pitch - after hearing a note, you can tell the difference between other notes. This skill is what most musicians try to perfect. You are dissing this skill and shouldn’t. (3) Recalled pitch - the skill you are selling. You play a particular instrument and can identify notes on the instrument. With perfect pitch not being an option for most, musicians should seek 2 and 3. You are correct that 3 works well, but your video was full of comments about what can’t do because you don’t try to develop relative pitch. You would better if you did.

I'm not dissing anything. I just want people to know that "recalled pitch" (as you call it) is most important to guitarists whose main goal is to improve as players. And after teaching guitar for decades, I found that relative pitch training was time-consuming and didn't produce the results guitar players were looking for.

Desi Serna Guitar Totally agree it’s most important. All types are important but option one (true pitch) is only acquired very young. Still think someone will figure out a way that true pitch can be acquired late in life. After reviewing a lot of ear training programs I’m seeing a pattern where they trick people jumping up octaves. Exactly what won’t work to learn. If you start at lowest note and work up to highest note... frequency tightens. Always. Sense of vibration is key. But training tricks people and confuses when jump octaves without informing that it’s possible. It’s making me want to make a device you touch to skin. An A note on a higher string is faster than an A note on a lower string, but there is a similar sensation.
