Best family car? 2023 Volkswagen Passat review: 206TSI R-Line wagon | Skoda Octavia rival impresses

The 2023 Volkswagen Passat might be the mid-size car that convinces you to not buy a 'family SUV'. Wagons like this 206TSI R-Line aren't exactly fashionable these days, but that doesn't mean it's not the best option for some buyers.
After all, the Skoda Octavia and Mazda6 rival's two-box design is naturally practical, making sure there's plenty of room for passengers and all their gear. Plus, this flagship version is powered by a hearty 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine derived from the related Volkswagen Golf R hot hatch.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar and her family of three spend a week with the Passat 206TSI R-Line to find out if it really is as good as it sounds on paper. Spoiler alert: it sure is.

This model Passat in particular has always been an underrated car, very solid option if this is the kind of car you want.

Great review of a great wagon, although I think an 8/10 is a bit light on. Apart from the brilliant ride, power, luxury and space, it’s worth mentioning the matrix LED headlights, autonomous travel assist, adaptive dampers, great Harman Kardon stereo and the fact it sprints 0-100kms in 5.7sec….take that SUVs 😅😅

Great car This and the Skoda Superb wagon are very underrated. So much room in Row 2, and in the boot Fantastic family vehicle VW also offer Passat Alltrack in Australia. Sadly, all the sheeple buy an SUV ! All new model Passat and Superb will be revealed late 2023 in Europe Passat will only be a wagon, no more sedan VW Australia yet to confirm if the new Passat will come here in 2024 VW only sell about 1,000 new Passat in Australia per year Seems as though Skoda Australia will bring the all new Superb here, next year. 🙏🏻

I have the Skoda and there is not much difference except the price. They both have the same level of service and support (none) but while they work, they are great cars. Good power and handling and I have got down to 5Lt/100 on a long trip.

Best car all round brilliant.i have mine on a 21plate. Fuel.comfort .space..ect spot on .. flappy paddles or auto... sports mode.

Good video.. why the hell can't we get this in the US. Would seriously think about trading my 2020 passat for this wagon if it were an option in the U.S.

Octavia rival? Im not sure as its closer to Superb size and its not as good as that model

Not Octavia rival. Skoda Superb rival. I'd take superb over it. But both are good. If you are a genuine car enthusiast this should be got wrong

Errr this is an anti-SUV and a brilliant one at that!! Wagons were around long before UV’s came along to destroy humanity. Notice I dropped the S as there’s nothing sporty about them.
